worked awesome, the only thing was that i had to get all of my fixes installed again. but it works. anyone think that i could use this method to update to 10.4.10?

It will work for 10.4.10 too. Just make sure you currently have 10.4.9 and do NOT use the combo update.

I've tried using your method to update from 10.4.9/8.9.1 to 10.4.10/8.10.1 at least 3 times and every time it's failed... No boot in safe, single user, ... mode. I just get oodles and oodles of text scrolling quickly down the screen till it reboots by itself. Safe mode: same thing. Which obviously sucks... But it seems to work for most people...

Just don't yell at Ahmad if the update to 10.4.10 fails :)

Hi!

I successfully updated to 10.4.9, and then to 10.4.10 with koolkal`s patch.

After that i had that acpi problem. so i tried to copy from my backup: acpi, apic, blah, blah, ...and some other. at least i copied whole extension dir and loginwindow back.

Now i`ve the same problem as before, but 10.4.9 again.

At least i can boot with -f, then everything is loading ok!

The kernel is working good, i tried with backed up version as well and the same problem.

What can i do, why it stucks at acpi{censored} and with -f its working MMMMMMmmmmmmmhhhhhh

Maximus Arelius how did you do that (<- `ve seen you have sse2 only as well!) ? ? ?

Is 8.10.1 Kernel already out for sse2? so plz, tell me on which irc?!

THX in advance

CAN I PLEASE GET A TUTORIAL ON HOW TO REPAIR MY INSTALLATION DUE TO A FAILED INSTALL PLEASE???? I HAVE ACCESS TO THE PARTITION IN WINDOWS, THANK YOUI followed all the steps but my system will not boot, im seeing the old files i backed up durring the terminal commands but i dont know what to do with them

When you get a Kernel panic, simply restore your OS by pressing F8 during the booting process, then type "old" without the ", it will take some time an then OSX will be up again. Then just follow these steps (use the terminal)sudo -srm -rf /mach_kernelcp -R /old /mach_kernelI, myself, still have the problem of my core duo not being recognized correctly, I'm still only getting "3 GHz Intel Core Solo" displayed.(which, for example, results in not being able to edit HD Video, because everything gets stuttery and the sound is quite wierd somehow)
i see this file called old but what exactly do you mean by "some time" i've been waiting a long while now

Would upload a screeny but haven't yet figured how to do "printscreen" on OSx.
Glad to hear about your success... Now for screenshots:

Command+Shift+3 : fullscreen screenshot -> saved to desktop as picture x.png

Command+Shift+4: your cursor changes appearance, you can now click+drag a rectangle to take a screenshot of a selected area on screen. Also saved to desktop. Very useful!

Worked like a charm. Thanks to all. Now I am just waiting for a SSE2 kernel for 10.4.10.

Thanks again.

Are they even trying to make a sse2 10.4.10 kernel? They are only improving the kernel for sse3 and newer machines now. Maybe they'll make one later once they (almost) perfect it.

I don't know if they are, but I guess I could just upgrade to 10.4.10 with the .9 kernel.

Thanks for the info.

I changed the title of the thread since the update instructions can also be used to update to 10.4.10. Just remember not to use the combo updater to update 10.4.x to 10.4.10 because it won't work. I also don't recommend updating the kernel yet. :(

I went form 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 just fine, installed the 8.9.1 kernel just fine.

Went for the update to 10.4.10 and I get a Kernel panic on boot, "Backtrace Terminated" and it references the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement kext. Gotta run out for a meeting at work, but will copying this kext back to the extensions folder clear this one up? Or should I revert back to the image I made before all these updates and do something differently?

This is my desktop system, specs in sig :)

Make sure you removed this kext from your extensions folder. If not then do so.

It turns out, that my old kernel was actually 8.4.1 (10.4.8) -- I followed all of the steps here, and after running the 10.4.9 updater provided by apple, things would not execute properly in my terminal. Each time I entered a terminal command, I would get "Illegal instruction" and could not copy kexts back. Naturally, the reboot didn't go as planned, and booting with "old" wasn't happy because of the new kexts.

I did manage to get around this though by booting the Boot CD, and opening up Terminal there. I managed to get the kexts, loginapp, etc to where they need to be, as my Volume was mounted with the boot CD.

After all said and done, I'm hanging at the "grey screen" now. Stuff like "Failed to load extension com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowermanagement, extension com.apple.driver.AppleFWOHCI, Couldn't alloc class "ApplueUSBUHCI" ... etc.

Is this because my kernel is too old for 10.4.9? Should I proceed with the kernel upgrade (via flash media, and boot CD) and hope for the best, or is there something I should try first?

All this 'cuz I wanted to run iLife '08 ... lol

And help would be HIGHLY appreciated. :P Thanks!

Yeah I had done that as part of the process. Turns out the restore image I made of my drive went MIA right when I needed it so I had to start from scratch all over. Just finished patching all my stuff up a few minutes ago, so I'm about to do the 10.4.9 update real quick and just stay away from the .10 update for the time being :(

After following the method to the 'T' i am unable to boot my amd machine. I get some CPU.POWERMANAGEMENT kext error (kernal trap). I feel stupid to have gone ahead with the upgrade even though I didn't really need it, but curiosity got better of me. Usually I would start with a fresh install but I have too much stuff on there to clean out ...I know I should back up but it was about 32 gigs and I didn't have enought room on the other pc.

Anyways I also tried -s to boot, after that kext it just hangs ..doesn't say power off or anything...but can someone suggest a way to boot into my old kernal? or some way to recover. Please..help!

edit: ok I just missed the post similar to mine couple of posts above the different is i was upgrading from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 (btw my 10.4.8 was TUBGIRL TEST). Anyways how do i remove the kext now that I am unable to boot or bring up the terminal? I did try using my install dvd just get the same error and it asks me to reboot / restart.

Yeah, i have the same problem with Lightworker. I installed 10.4.9 and kernel 8.9.1 and works fine. Then i followed this tutorial to update to 10.4.10 w/o new kernel and i cant boot.
Aye, i had the same problem... Couldn't even boot into safe mode, nothing worked... Not even booting with flag 'old'. Oh well, i got good at reinstalling OS'es :censored2: Keeping that system at 10.4.9/8.9.1. I used koolkal's updater for this comp, and it worked like a charm: 10.4.8-10.4.10/8.10.1 in a single step/pkg :censored2: I even had sleep working for a bit, hehe... Will look into sorting that out next week.
