tinkrtoy
This tutorial/thread has been extremely helpful in getting OS X running on my M1210. Thanks! I have a couple questions -- has anyone tried running a Broadcom wireless card out of the WWAN slot and leaving the Intel card alone? I only ask because I am getting less than stellar performance from the 1490 card I grabbed off fleab@y and I would like to continue using the Intel card in Windows. I put the 1490 card in the WWAN slot and both Windows and OS X detect it, but I cannot find any networks in Windows. Before I go playing around in OS X where I am least familiar, I was wondering if anyone has tried this approach and had success (or not)? Also, how do I find the code for the 1490 card? All the system profiler tells me is 14e4,0x7. Should this be a 4 digit number after the 14e4 that I need to put in the IO80211Family.kext file? Thanks in advance
KingTKS
well you'd have to switch out the antenna each time you want to use it.
tinkrtoy
There are separate antenna leads for the WWAN slot and they connect fine to the card. Will they not work for picking up signals??
KingTKS
well there are only 3 connectors and i am pretty sure that two are required for the wifi. i'm no expert so i don't know for a fact.
tinkrtoy
OK, so I have verified that the Dell 1490 card works in the WWAN slot in Windows. Guess I just have to figure out how to get it enabled in OS X. Anyone have an answer for me on the code question that I posted about what I need to put in the IO80211 kext file for the Dell 1490 card? KingTKS -- my notebook has 2 antenna leads (one white and one black) for the WLAN card slot and 2 antenna leads (also one white and one black) for the WWAN card slot. They were just laying in there with little plastic protective sleeves over the connector ends. Guess I answered my own question on this one, but thanks for the input. tinkrtoy
Kept trying and success! Turns out that the Dell 1490 card is 14e4,4312 which is already in the IO80211Family.kext package, soooooo..... I moved onwards to editing the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist file as suggested in other threads (change en0 to en1 and the 0 to a 1 a few lines down), rebooted and Airport is working like a charm - This little laptop continues to amaze me. So I am now using the Intel 3945 card in WLAN card slot in Windows and the Dell 1490 card in the WWAN slot in OS X. The best of both worlds. I guess if you plan on putting a WWAN card in then this config for your dual boot Windows/OS X lappy is not for you, but I don't see that happening for me anytime soon since I just Bluetooth connect through my Treo when I need cell data access. Cheers!
JorgeJones
About the Dual Core issue, I really don't mind not having both cores working, it seems to be doing fine without it, in fact, I think the battery is lasting A LOT longer because the machine is just using one core. Just my impression, but it seems like the extended battery on this machine lasts like 7 hours in OS X.
borzo
How did you resolved that screen rotates 90 degrees clockwise? I can't get it... Resolved picking up the installer from another iso. Another "problem". I heard about a module that enables speedstep so the fan should go down and the cpu downclocks itself when running on battery. But here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...=42865&st=0 I can't find the installer... Should someone helps?
KingTKS
congrats on the double wifi. strangely i thought i only remember seeing 3 lines becasue i was wanting to do the exact same thing you did. thanks now i'll try it. About the Dual Core issue, I really don't mind not having both cores working, it seems to be doing fine without it, in fact, I think the battery is lasting A LOT longer because the machine is just using one core. Just my impression, but it seems like the extended battery on this machine lasts like 7 hours in OS X. If i turn down the brightness all the way and just leave the computer runnig i get about 7 hours. using word, internet 5-6 hours. on average I get 4 hours regular use and full brightness. gaming 2-3 hours. With osx I have not had any increase in battery life. in fact a little bit of decrease. only a little. the fact that dual core doesn't work wont' effect the battery life. if anything it uses more because multitasking takes more time because it's disabled, therefore wasting more miliseconds of time being wasted and used by all the other components in the system. IE hard drive monitor. if you are really getting that big of a performance difference you may want to check your processes in windows or reinstall if they arn't close to mine. I'm presuming you have the extended battery. I do. if you have the regular 5 cell then i'd be amazed. I can only pull off 4 with my 9-call battery in osx. How did you resolved that screen rotates 90 degrees clockwise? I can't get it... Resolved picking up the installer from another iso. Another "problem". But here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...=42865&st=0 I can't find the installer... Should someone helps? if you are talking about your video driver you probably used natit and i had the same problem with it being 90 degrees so i used titan like in my guide. I think this will help you for you sleep link. I installed this and it actually worked. I have successfully made my mac go to sleep and wake up 3 times http://www.macdotnub.info/dev/ be sure you have 10.4.9 installed Select customize during the installation and select the 1st, 2nd, and 4th choices. no reason to install duddies monitor. its annoying. KingTKS
So i have discovered 100% success if you tell it to sleep either by pressing power button hitting sleep or from the apple button. but if it automatically is set to sleep it will jack up. But I have discovered it is not the sleep that is jacking up. it is instead the option below the sleep that says put display to sleep when computer is inactive. KingTKS
I have reinstalled this sleep fix a few times and i got the best results with it after i did the custom install with the 1st,2nd,and 5th choices only.
borzo
You reinstalled the sleep fix, but is the same fix that slows down the fans? It's the only thing I need cause It's perfect but the battery discharges too fast cause the processor remains 2.0ghz and the fans runs fast. Help... Something to add to the tutorial. KingTKS
stilll researching it here is a forum i found http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...=42865&st=0 if you read the license it tells you what each fix does. 1st - i think fixes sleep 2nd - is a cpu fix for certian systems. I don't think it applies for our dells. correct me if i'm wrong please 3rd - cpu manager to change your cpu speed. manually saving battery life by slowing it down. 4th - auto runs the 3rd. I prefere to set it to auto run the way i want it to under accounts in system settings 5th - not sure but i'd like to find out 6th - if you have 10.4.

If I install in that way a modified version of the kernel will be the support to the speakers available even if I use no more mifki kernel? Is there any other problem related to other periphrals? And last but not least, where is the file to download? In the other thread it's written "Link down" but can't find the link... Thanks

My main computer took a {censored} (bad memory) right before I was going to try putting OSx86 on it, and I don't want to mess up my laptop with my other computer down, I don't think I could take it. I'm one of the people who had to use the mifki kernal to get my speakers working, but when I ran uname -a I have this: Darwin alfdogs-computer.local 8.9.1 Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.1: Thu Mar 15 20:55:00 PST 2007; netkas: 792.18.15~1/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386 The ACPICPUThottler should work I guess, but at the moment, I'm of the opinion "if it isn't broke, don't fix it", I'll wait to see more of your testing KingTKS. borzo
You installed the latest release 3 replacing your kernel when you install? And the speakers still works? What kind of troubles?
KingTKS
sound works perfectly for me. OK here is my final verdict on the ACPICPUThrottler I can only get sleep to work perfectly if i install it as its default settings. meaning don't hit customize. the bottom 2 of the 6 options stay unchecked. Which sucks because i guess the sleep revolves around that cpu throttler. which is really annoying that it has to start up and is there everytime i startup. and you can't make it autorun your own way cause it;ll require your password and thats even more annoying. so if you want sleep i guess we have to deal with the cpu manager starting up. also to shutdown restart you have to forcequite the manager. i guess it jacks up after you sleep. anyone got any ideas to make this better? SO SLEEP WORKS. automated sleep still doesn't but oh well. anyone know how to make their laptop sleep on lid close?
borzo
I updated and installed CPUThrottle... But the program that opens up look useless, is there a program I can use to set cpu speed and fan speed? Something that uses ACPICPUThrottle of course...
KingTKS
yeah I know what you mean. it's useless and quite annoying but seems to be the only way to get sleep to work. I'll try to get into the forums and see if the creator will make a special one for XPS systems. in the mean time i'm gonna go to disney for a weeek so i may not be on the forums much. so everyone keep up the good work. Seabee
I tried the installation on a clean hard drive (2 partitions). Got issues: At the end of the instalation, display is corrupted. Windows content won't refresh correctly, so that it is very hard to do the modifications. When I restart, I get "HFS partition error" (or smtg alike). I have to let the DVD in the tray to boot it. F8 only shows me the DVD. I used the "good" DVD, aka SSE3.only. I don't know if I should pick up the "semthex" or the "mifki" at the installation, or both of them. I have the 7400go. Any hint welcome, I tried a few time, result stays the same.
