NSD Posted February 5, 2007 Share Posted February 5, 2007 (edited) Hey guys Just like many others, I'm having the "still waiting for root device" problem. My hardware: AMD Opteron 170 (stock) Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Pri mas: 80GB Maxtor IDE Pri sla: LG DVD drive Sec mas: 120GB WD IDE Sec sla: 300GB Seagate IDE Video: 7800GTX What's going on: I've installed OSX JaS's 10.4.8 (patched with v1p and the Diskutil fix) in VMware, on the physical 80GB Maxtor. It was a custom install, with all the relevant patches, minus Titan's patch. Also I've removed all languages and printer drivers, except Canon's. In VMware everything seems to work fine, yet when I try to boot normally I get the "still waiting for root device" message. I've tried a whole bunch of boot flags none of which actually made a difference. Also I've tried the installation with Titan's patch, yet the same thing happens. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated . anhel Posted February 5, 2007 Share Posted February 5, 2007 - I have a same problem as you, NSD. - I have: AMD Opteron (64bit), 512 DDR2, and 1 partition 60GB on my laptop. - I installed succesfully v10.4.8 .. but after reboot the "waiting for root device" message appears.. - Any Ideas what to do? NSD Posted February 6, 2007 Author Share Posted February 6, 2007 Hey. Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately it didn't do the trick. The partition was already set as active. Nevertheless, I toggled the flag and tried again, with no luck. I've updated my first post with a new picture. I wonder if "com.apple.driver.AppleOnboardPCATA has no kernel dependency" has anything to do with it - I'll look it up now. Any more suggestions please ? topbanana Posted February 6, 2007 Share Posted February 6, 2007 I just had this and fixed it. My hard drive was a primary master, but the DVD drive was a secondary slave. I moved the DVD to the primary slave position and it started working. Hope that helps someone. hecker Posted February 7, 2007 Share Posted February 7, 2007 (edited) It's also good to setup all the drives in the BIOS manually. DVD and CD-Roms are sometimes classified as "disks" by some BIOS (I had this problem). Turning off the auto switch and setting the DVD-Rom device as such fixed the problem for me. It's also important to follow the IDE connection guidelines: For 40Pin Cables: master MUST be in the MIDDLE and slave on the end. For 80Pin Cables: master MUST be in the END and slave in the middle. Blue connector goes to MainBoard. Never use the cable select setting on any drive either.
