Got a copy of Kiko's 10.4.8 update to use on my 10.4.6 installation. Just wondering what I should take into consideration before I install. (As far as drivers, stability of 10.4.8, the possibility of the update failing and me being left with a non-functional system). Any suggestions? I've got a Radeon x1800XT (Using Borisbadenov now, Natit for 10.4.8?), both integrated Marvel Gigabit LAN and a TCX-905 (working out of box under 10.4.6, the WiKi says 10.4.8 does not support it, has anyone had success?) and Realtek ALC-883 HD audio (Needs kext edit, I'll probably need to dig around on my own to find anything on this) . I'm fine with doing some information gathering myself as to how to get things working, just looking for some input as to how hard it will be to get everything operational again. I'd rather keep 10.4.6 if it'll be much trouble, yanno?

My personal expierence indicates that 10.4.5 is the "best" version with support for most hardware (read: with the least amount of problems on majority of hardware). The problem is that Apple is binding ppl on 10.4.8 with certain apps (they KNOW that 10.4.8 gives much trouble to hackers as is shown on these forums so this is no surprise). Now Adobe has done the same with Photoshop CS 3. So if you need these apps then you have no choice but to upgrade to 10.4.8. Unless (in the case of Photoshop) you can install it on another OSX10.4.8 system and copy it over. It will work but it'll complain that some files are not in Library/Application Support (even while you put them there) the other apps will complain about suposedly reduced functionality or performance (utter bollocks if you ask me). And ofcourse the Photoshop installer will complain that it can't run on your OSX version. In fact if anyone knows a way to make at least photoshop's installer run from a pre-10.4.8 systems or know how to extract the necesarry data please let me know.

In my own case I turned back to 10.4.6 with 10.4.7 update as this let Photoshop complain less (except for the suposedly missing files in the library). I used to be happy with OSX but now I don't anymore. Forcing ppl to upgrade whenever "they" want is not my idea of "freedom of choice" especially since OS 10.4 should be OS 10.4 no matter what subversion you run. All apps designed for 10.4 should run as well on 10.4.1 as on 10.4.8. I also don't like that once you install a certain version you can't go back without loosing your data.

Ofcourse you have a radeon X1800 so upgrading might turn out better than for us X1600pro-owners.
