Here are some noteworthy news items from this week:

- Sources have disclosed that Apple's iPhone will use Marvell's XScale processors, which is the next evolution of the line of ARM processors originally designed by Intel, who recently sold the marchitecture to Marvell Technologies. For those who are unfamiliar with this marchitecture, the PXA2XX generation XScale processors are used in almost all PocketPC type PDAs on the market. However, if Apple is using Marvell's newly released offerings, the iPhone will likely be powered by a PXA3XX generation chip, which clocks up to 1.25 GHz @ 1000 MIPS. In addition, the iPhone will be using Intel designed flash memory similar or identical to what is found in the current generation of iPod Nanos.

- Screenshots of the latest build of Apple's OS X 10.5 Leopard has just been leaked by Gizmodo. For those of you who are not running the developers' builds already, don't expect anything revolutionary to be revealed.

- It has been confirmed now that Apple will indeed charge extra for their BootCamp feature when it's officially released with Leopard. Cost is $29, a small price to pay to conform the the Windows running masses. BootCamp will allow the new Windows Vista to run properly in dual-boot configuration with OS X.

- And finally, Steve Jobs has been under investigation these past few weeks over concerns that he allegedly withheld information regarding improperly backdated options [7.5 million in fact], and took a rather long period of time to report the problem... long enough, it seems , to make the Feds uncomfortable... (Seriously. Who can live on a salary of $1 a year?)

Just look at Woz. He hasn't worked for Apple for years and he's still rich. I doubt that the money came from some other job that he got prior to resigning. Backdating doesn't necessarily give you money to put in your pocket, but it does lower the company's premiums as a whole, and it gives you more total capital to work with.

The latest screenshots of Leopard show some new screen savers. Yawn. I did find that new media organizer folder really cool though. I hope the Finder's sidebar icons get a much-needed facelift too.

It sounds like the iPhone's processor is actually more powerful than the CPU in my old 2002 Gateway desktop. :thumbsup_anim:

will we have to pay extra for boot camp in leopard? will it work if we already are dual booted

That sounds like what it is to me. I think BootCamp will either come preinstalled with Leopard and be locked, or it will not come with Leopard and will have to be purchased from Apple.

I always heard that bootcamp would be free for leopard buyers and would cost 30$ for people wanting to continue with tiger

Just my interpretation of things

Hmm, that would make sense as well, but don't be too optimistic about it .

yes i think it will be free with leopard. they will do the same thing they are doing with the new airport base stations, they can say that the price paid for leopard includes the $30 cost of bootcamp. the same thing they are doing with 802.11n capability and the new routers.

It certainly isn't for the same reasons though is it? I mean that was supposedly to avoid legal issues.

As I was told in another topic, Apple decided to make it free. Instead of charge for it. Considering how much bad press they were getting plus how they're answer was being rebuffed to say it was a lie. I think it was a good move on their part.

How much would Quicktime Pro + 802.11 n + Leopard + Boot Camp + Vista run? That's starting to get expensive.

These screen shots could so easily be from Tiger..

If you've been following news, you'd know Leopard doesn't have its own GUI yet. Wallpapers and visual themes are all added in the latest stages of development. That's why it looks like Tiger.

Tiger looked basically like Panther until it debuted. Underlying it all, it's still a new OS though.

Are the Leopard screenshots still available somewhere? maybe flickr or some kind of platform that is a little more viral and less to control than a blog?

Seems that Apple forgot to take its pills again.
