Attempted install version: OS X 10.4.4

System Specs: Model: Acer Aspire AST160; Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (939)(SSE, SSE2, SSE3, x86-64); Memory: 512MB (2 x 256MB Dual-channel) PC3200 DDR 400; Video: 256MB (Shared) GeForce 6100 (Onboard); HDD: Seagate Barracuda 200GB SATA; Mobo: Acer FC51GM; Chipset: nForce 410/430 MCP; BIOS: Phoenix Award 6.00PG (R02-B1)(7/14/2006); Optical: DVD+/- R/RW

Steps:

  • Partitioned drive to C: 150GB (NTFS, Windows XP Pro SP2, Active, Primary), and D: 50GB (FAT32, Primary).
  • Burned DVD ISO and booted from DVD
  • Installer started, but no keyboard/mouse
  • Connected USB mouse - USB mouse worked (still no keyboard of course)
  • When it says "Select destination drive", no drives are listed, nor are they listed in the Disk Utility. The only disk drive listed in Disk Utility is my optical drive.

I am aware that there are nForce/ SATA issues, but are there any workarounds for my configuration? I am also trying to obtain "Mac-OS-X-10.4.7-AMD.Intel-(JaS)-ISO-Repack". Will the new copy fix my issues at least enough to install on the partition until a better nForce/ SATA fix is made?

Thank you very much in advance for any help!

**UPDATE** Along with downloading "Mac-OS-X-10.4.7-AMD.Intel-(JaS)-ISO-Repack", I also decided to try "OSX_1048_AMD", and "JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3", none of which have completed downloading yet. If anyone out there knows whether or not any of the 3 above listed will work, PLEASE post here and let me know. Also, if you know a workaround for my 10.4.4 issue, please post. Thanks again!

@linfeng - Maybe try different BIOS settings, I noticed that in my BIOS the default system memory allocation for the GeForce 6100 is only set to 64MB. How that ends up being 256MB once in Windows, I don't know. Probably the drivers telling Windows to set it to 256MB. I would try turning the memory allocation up to 256MB in the BIOS (I believe the options are 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, and 512MB). If you are running an OSXP dual-boot, it might end up allocating all of your system memory to the video card in XP though, so be careful!

Now another update for my issue... the OSX_1048_AMD ISO finished (-v reads 10.4.7, not 10.4.8 though - still better than the 10.4.4 version I was trying to use before), and much to my dismay, it appears as if I made yet another DVD into a lovely coaster. HDD still not showing up in Disk Utility. I have decided to wait until I get a response to this thread before burning any more images of OS X.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. Looks to me like I might be forced (or "nForced" :) ) into obtaining an IDE HDD (if I remember correctly, my MOBO only has 1 IDE port, used by the optical drive - so an IDE HDD may not even be a practical solution for me), if anyone can confirm this or help me with an nForce/ SATA workaround, by all means...

Thanks again in advance!

its your first step.....

creat a partition without format... (u can use a windows xp boot cd)

then use the os x dvd and boot .. when u promt to install use "disk utiliy" and format the non formated partition to hfs journaled

now u can install...

ps: use search u will find a lot regarding this :(

So the partition should just be "unallocated space", correct (no format, no drive letter or label, etc)? I'll try it, and thank you for the suggestion. Hopefully it works! I'll let ya know...

Well I deleted the partition, which basically converted the partition to 50GB of unallocated space on the drive. Now I have (according to Win XP Disk Manager) C: 150GB NTFS (System), and 50GB unallocated free space. I place the "OSX_1048_AMD" DVD in the drive and rebooted, and still got the same results - only optical drive appears in Disk Utility. When I go to Utilities -> System Analyzer (or called something similar), it pretty much detects my whole system (optical drive, processor, memory, video card) but when I select "Serial ATA devices" from the left side menu, it says something to the effect of: "No Serial ATA devices found, make sure any Serial ATA devices are plugged in and turned on". I have also noticed that the HDD light on the PC is inactive while the installer is running, indicating that the drive is not being used. Should I not make the partition unallocated space? If not, what is the procedure for creating a partition with no format?

Thanks again!

Ok, I changed the 50GB unallocated space back to D, but this time with no format. After that, I tried installing "JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3", and it STILL doesn't see my hard drive ;). I think I'm just gonna give up on the OSx86 idea for a while. Thanks anyway :)

I'll check back periodically to see if anyone can offer any other solutions, but for the time being, I'm out of DVD-R's anyways.
