I downloaded the Apple.OS.X.x86.10.4.Generic.Install.DVD and burnt the ISO to a dvd, put it in my Dell GX260 (P4 1.9 with SSE2, 512MB ram, 30GB HD), and it booted off the DVD, i selected Darwin and it loaded the apple screen. All appears good up to this point.

Then it got to the install screen, and it errors out. I get a message saying that the install could not complete.

Then when i try to run the DVD with the -V paramater, I get the text output of the boot much like any other linux/unix OS ive used, then i get this error that keeps going on the screen:

disk1s2: I/O error. SAM Multimedia: READ or WRITE failed, ASC = 0x11, ASCQ = 0x00
usually its ASCQ = 0x06

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

I got past this, i reburnt the dvd, odly enough it got me to the install screen. But now its not showing my hard drive when it asks to select where to install the OS. Any ideas on why its doing that? Note im not doing this in VM Ware im installing this onto the system directly off the boot DVD.

Do i need to blank the hard drive first? Currently it has NTFS partitions which i thought would just read as forign partitions in the OS X installation.

Specs?

If your disk is on SATA channel Mac OS X can't see it, only if your chipset is Intel and BIOS setting is (ugh, search in the forum I just forget it).

Also, did you try Disk Utility to partition the Disk?

I just have a normal IDE 30GB Seagate drive. I went into the disk utility and deleted all the partitions and formated it. Im currently writing 0's to all the free space to get all the data off of it. Ill let you know if that works. Tell me now please if you know for sure that wont work.

Thanks

Steve

I wish i could only have 1 IDE controller enabled. Sadly with the Dell Optiplex series the DVD/CD rom drives are laptop drives so you cant have them on a standard IDE cable.

Partitioning the drive and writing zeros to the free space in Disk Utility did work. Now im starting the installation, I hope it finishes successfully. *crosses fingers*

PS: I had to put in a PCI ATI card because my onboard Intel Graphics on my Dell GX260mobo showed distorted and only black and white picture, and I couldnt read any of the text. Sadly the case is an Optiplex form factor so i cant close the case because the videocard is about 2 inches taller than the case. Any ideas on getting video working.

I will give the AppleIntel* kexts a try later.

As for getting the install working i was able to do that. Even though the install finished and said there were errors im able to successfully get into the operating system by booting from the bootable DVD and pressing F8 then typing:

rd=disk0s1

Success i got the OS working. And it took me only a few hours. Thanks for all the help guys and gals.

Hi, just a suggestion. You dont need to go through so much trouble when preparing your disk for install. Just start installation, if your disk does not show up for the install destination click Utilities menu then Disk Utility, then delete/recreate partition and format it, after format it should mount the partition for you, if it doesnt just click on the mount button with the partition selected.

I had the same errors you did and I also had to re-burn dvd, then my HD would not show so I figured it just wasnt mounting properly and i found that apple's built in Disk Utility was the perfect solution. Enjoy! :)

This is a known problem with boards having onboard vga. just try to increase the amount on video memory from the BIOS to more than 16MB(32MB is optimal), Since that OS X requires more than 16MB of VRAM.

Did either of you find out how to boot with the DVD and install to a SATA hard drive? I tried the Disk Utility and my SATA hard drive just wont show up.

I have a Dell Dimension 5150 with ICH7 and Raid 1... I do have kext patches for the ICH7, but don't know how or where to put them on the DVD. Is it possible to replace the kexts some how and force the DVD to see my SATA drive?

Thanks

I now have my system up and running. I ended up buying a new Dell Dimension 5150 and using it for my system, It has the following:

P4 630

945G

ICH7 SATA with RAID 1

Sigmatel STAC9220 audio

Intel GMA950 video

Intel Nic

I haven't got the audio working as of yet. I had to install from my 10.4.1 DVD image to an IDE hard drive then edit the AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext file to get the system to boot from the SATA hard drive. Several of the patches I initially used didn't have all the correct settings for the ICH7. I added several patches and it seems to be running well. I did get an initial xbench of around 62, bu now I am in the 40 range. Not sure why the drop, must be one of the patches I added. I am so new to mac/linux, its going to take me a bit of time to figure out how to edit settings to get my system perfect. I just need to figure out a way to get the audio to work and I will be golden for now. I still want an actual Mactel when they come out, maybe after the price settles. I hear they are comming out with an iBook and iMac in January...

The long version.... I couldn't get the DVD install to see my SATA drive and installed on an IDE hard drive for starters.

Well after 2 days of pulling my hair out, I finally got it… Thanks to Erick for pointing me in the right direction. I did quite a bit of reading to figure this out, this is what I did.

First off, I added the 945gExtensions.pkg patch which added the SATA and video among other things. I kept thinking about a post on how to edited the kext file and added the vendor and device ID’s. I was sure that after adding the 945gExtensions.pkg that the SATA was working since I could see the SATA hard drive in OSX that was on my IDE drive. I just couldn’t boot or install to it.

Well I was half right, the info.plist had only one of the vendor and device ID’s in it. The one for IDE in bold below…

27c0 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controllers cc=IDE

27c1 82801GR/GH (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controllers cc=AHCI

27c3 82801GR/GH (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controllers cc=RAID

I had to do a lot of reading in order to figure that out. I didn’t know how to edit the kext files. This is how I did it…

1. Open the /system/library/extensions/ folder and copied the AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext to the desktop by right clicking it (dragging it may also work) and copying it then pasting it to the desktop.

2. Then rename the original kext AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext to AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext.old in the /system/library/extensions/ folder.

3. Right click on the AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext file on the desktop and select “show package contents”.

4. In the new window that opens, you will see the package contents and the Info.plist file. Right click on the Info.plist file and select “Open > with” and the select texedit.

5. Now scroll down to the section that says “ICH6 Serial ATA Controller” and go to the line

<key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> and just below it edit the string as follows:

<string>0x27c08086 0x27c18086 0x27c38086</string>

this adds the IDE, AHCI, and RAID for the ICH7 Serial controller. Remove anything else that is between the <string> and </string>

6. Now save the file and close the text editor. Also close the open package so you are bak to the desktop.

7. Open the extensions folder again and now drag the AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext file you just edited into it. If you are prompted to authenticate, do so and enter your password.

8. Almost done… Now go to the Applications/Utilities folder and open Terminal.

9. In terminal, type the following:

“sudo chmod –R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext” minus the quotes and hit enter. You may need your password…

10. Again in terminal type the following:

“sudo chown –R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext” minus the quotes.

11. Close terminal.

12. Open the /System/Library/ folder and delete extensions.mkext and extensions.kextcache.

13. Reboot and you are golden!!! Use -f -v when you get to the Darwin prompt. I tried with out it, but it hangs at waiting for root device. You may only need to do this after the firs and second reboot...

I hope this helps everyone out. It took me days to figure it out and put together from all of the different posts. You can edit other kext files in the same manner by changing the file name.

Good luck, I am off to play with OSX!
