Ok so here's the dillema. I have installed OS X on many pc's before without a problem but now i have one. I'm trying to install it on my gf's HP Pavillion a767c here are the specs

P4 540 3.2Ghz SSE2 and SSE3 on here so thats all good

200gig Wester Digital Caviar

2 gigs of PC3200 Memory

And your standard dvd writer and dvd-rom

Now heres how i started out, I installed Norton Partition Magic on her PC so i could resize the XP partition (NTFS) from 170gigs to 159gigs leaving about 10.7 gigs for the OS x installation. Now the other part i should mention is that now i have three partitions and they are in this order in windows xp diskpart program

Partition 1 - 6gigs FAT32 filesystem (primary)

Partition 2 - 159 gigs NTFS filesystem (XP) (primary) (active)

Partition 3 - 10gigs id=af (primary)

Partition 1 is an HP Recovery partition where if you select F12 while in the BIOS, it will reinstall all the software and XP OS to when it came out of the box.

Now after doing (create partition primary id=af) i then went ahead restarted my computer with a 10.4.6 install dvd which i have used numerous times before and installed OS x without a hitch. I did this again and it installed without any errors. I then restarted the machine which restarted to XP (which is normal for me) i then went into diskpart again and made the OS X installation active. I then restarted the computer again to which my amazement somehow restarted into XP with no errors. I went into both norton partition magic and diskpart to check everything and i saw this (attached pictures). Both xp and os x were both active. dont know how

I have no idea what im doing wrong any help would be appreciated.

Two things:

1. Diskpart is saying the OSX partition (3) is "hidden". Perhaps this is how it can be active yet not available.

2. OSX doesn't work well behind those restore partitions. Many people find they need to completely reformat and repartition to remove the restore partition and then install Windows and OSX.

Install BootMagic from your Partition Magic CD onto your FAT32 partition.

Use it instead of grub or chain0 as bootmanager, it works very nicely and will set appropriate partition active reliably.

I posted an OSX icon for bootmagic a long time ago, PM me if you can't find it
