EDIT- The problem has changed. Please see my next post in this thread for more details.

I installed the JaS 10.4.7 on a 40 GB Western Digital IDE hard drive on my highly modified Dell computer (specs below). Installation seemed to be successful, but upon booting the machine up, I only make it to the grey screen with the white apple where after some time, a white "No Smoking" like symbol appears without the cigarette over the apple.

Dell Dimension 4700

Pentium 4 3 GHz

1.5 GB RAM

Nvidia 7800 GT

80 GB SATA hard drive (Windows only- OS X not installed on this

40 GB IDE hard drive (OS X has this to itself)

Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Sound Card

DVD-ROM drive of unknown brand.

Hyper threading has been turned off and the IDE hard drive is set as the master. The DVD-ROM is the slave and is on the same cable as the hard drive. I've left the machine hanging for a good 20-30 minutes and nothing changes. While hanging, the hard drive is not being accessed at all.

What is going on here?

Thanks for the quick help.

It seems as though I skipped past the customize option without realizing it!

I did a reinstall, but an getting a double panic upon startup, before I even reach the gray screen ;).

Here are the packages I installed:

Intel Combo Updat inst

Intel SSE3

Sound Blaster USB Audio Support

Wireless Networking Support

I will post back in a moment with a picture of the double panic.

The person in this thread seems to be having the same problem as me. He also happens to have the same CPU. Booting with cpus=1 hasn't worked either.

EDIT- Ok, here is a high-res picture of the error.

According to the wiki, someone with a Dell Dimension 4700 desktop got 10.6.4 working with the SSE2 package. I might reinstall and try that. I always thought my CPU had SSE3, but maybe I'm wrong.
