Looking at building myself a Hackintosh to run alongside my current Mac, but I want to put it in a PowerMac G4 case. So this limits me to mATX boards. I want to run a Core 2 Duo (probably an E6600) so something that supports it would be nice. The Asus P5B-VM seems like it would be a nice board. I thought i saw it on the 10.4.8 HCL but after looking for it again I cant seem to spot it. So I was wondering if anyone has tried this board and what kind of compatibility it has both out of the box and if theres haxies to get the rest of the hardware working.

So to sum it up because I just read what i wrote and I barely understand it, I want the Asus P5B-VM. What works, what doesn't and what can be patched. I managed to get myself a copy of JaS 10.4.8 Reseed so thats the version of OS X i want to use.

Any help would be great

So after doing some reading, and doing what I should have done in the first place, I looked at the boards and the only differences are that the P5B-VM is smaller and has onboard video. Other than that, they're the same board. If anyone wants to chime in some input, i'll still take it. Alternate board sugestions, whatever.

Thanks.

I've been trying to do my due diligence researching a micro-ATX board for OSx86. I'm getting *really* close to buying this board along with (most likely) the same E6600 processor setup above. I understand there are a number of people using the Asus P5B boards here, but this is the only place I've seen the P5B-VM (micro-ATX with G965 chipset) referenced. I want to be extra clear on a few points:

1. It sounds like other P5B users can get everything working with a few patches. Does that apply to this specific board as well? Is it safe to assume on-board video is out of the question?

2. Are there any specific limitations I should know about? I plan to use 2 channel audio, but it sounds like there may be some limitations there.

I'm pretty psyched about getting this setup. Your time and thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

I ended up buying the board. Everything works except onboard video (for time being).

No limitatoins. Very fast. Nice mATX board if i say so myself.

Thanks! I'm currently downloading "JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3" (about a million RAR files). From what I see here a few people required multiple installs to get things working right or at all on similar P5B boards. Once i have the ISO -> DVD, what do I need to know for the intial install? Should I worry about the patches after the initial install?

If I remember from the thread above, I can't install the DVD with an IDE drive, so I'll look for a SATA drive to avoid these issues, right?

At some point we should get the P5B-VM on the compatibility list if it works the way you say!

Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken you need to apply update patch v1p to this DVD image to get better drivers support.

If I'm not mistaken you need to apply update patch v1p to this DVD image to get better drivers support.

I was downloading patch v1p, but i figured i'd try to install from the regular JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3 DVD for my new P5B-VM. Now i'm getting "Still waiting for root device" which appears to be a pretty common problem. However, I'm surprised the DVD doesn't recognize my SATA controller based on Karmatose's feedback on his experience.

Relevant (?) error text: "AppleHDA.kext failed to load: unable to locate 'layout-id' property"

So, two questions:

1. Will update patch v1p likely solve this problem?

2. If it matters, what is the recommended order of SATA devices on the board? I thought I read that this matters. I have my SATA DVD in slot 1 and my HDDs in the two following.

Thanks!

using SATA DVD and 20G IDE disk for MAC, using SATA 250G disk for VISTA

1) installed Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2].iso, all worked/booted fine

2) installed RTL1xxx_1.02.pkg for enet controller, all worked fine

3) installed AzaliaAudio.pkg, audio works fine

I tried, Uphuck 1.3, 1.2 and even latest JAS.

In bios i have also tried everything i have AHCI etc. enabled moved around the SATA dvd and EVEN turned off one core.

The funny thing is i just wanted to test if my DVD was broken so i chucked it in a AMD machine without ANY adjustment and it started and i was just one click away from installation)

I dont get that far. I read someone else had the SAME problem, so he did this, Quoted from thread

"

Native:

Configuration in Bios:

-Disabled JMicron

-various configs of disabling LAN, Audio, Serial and Parallel)

-Set Intel ICH Controller to AHCI

Boot: -v -x

Im getting ACPI: System Stata [s0 S3 S4 S5] (S3)

after this message nothing happend (get an nonblinking cursor)

then i tried booting with the following options

Boot: -x -v -f platform=ACPI

now i get:

-Waiting for boot volume with UUID 732B-1B37-E75B-3115-8B90-5011C6E7A10B

-Waiting for on <dict ID"0"><key>ProviderClass</key><string ID="1"> ...........

-kld_load_from_memory () failed for module com.apple.driver.AppleHPET

-failed to load extension com.apple.driver.AppleHPET. -Couldn´t alloc Class "AppleHPET"

after that nothing happend anymore (get an nonblinking cursor)"

He got it working in the end, but he wouldnt tell how, cause no one was interested ? haha..

ok went throught the steps again for uphuck 10.4.9...here are my results...ASUS P5B-VM 7-21-2007(intel E4300, overclocked to 2.3G, 1G memory)using SATA DVD and 13G IDE disk for MAC, using SATA 250G disk for VISTA 1) installed uphuck Mac OS X 10.4.9 v1.3, all worked/booted fine 2) installed RTL1xxx_1.02.pkg for enet controller, all worked fine 3) installed AzaliaAudio.pkg, audio works finewould really like to understand/help figure why you guys are having such an issue...!!!???has ANYONE tried the "EXACT" installition I am running, for either 10.4.8 or 10.4.9....????note: please if you can't read look up the word EXACT
YEah for a FIRST mb, leave this one alone, some ppl get it to work, and other like me, cant even get the installation started and once they do they dont even answer Pms ;) hehe..
this board seems to work fine with BOTH JAS 10.4.8 and UPHUCK 10.4.9installed onto an IDE disk using an SATA DVD drive....adding in enet and audio packages after install....IMO

I owned this board for about 2 weeks and just couldn't get it to work properly and consistently. I really wanted it to work as I have a great deal of confidence in Asus boards. Among other things, I experienced some DVD install incompatibilities after OSX was loaded. I sent it back. Others on this site seem to have had much better luck than I did.

I guess i could try another 10 patches and patch uphuck thing to death, but honestly i dont have the time, I will just buy another mb. :)

I dunno how for example, uphuck, makes his system. It would be GREAT if in the future there would be, say 4-5 boards which are ultra compatible. with instructions and possible patches for those (or they could be intregrated all of them??

or just buy a mac!!!problem solved...
IDE drive.. hmm never tried that.. as it locks up even before the installation, what kind of bios settings you have? and have you patched the ISO with any special patches? like ide patch or whatever there is..
I have done no special patching but can tell from this post and to others with this board, if you cannot get you bios set correctly to recogonize BOTH SATA AND IDE disk your most likely are going to have issues...SOLVE THAT FIRST BEFORE EVEN TRYING TOinstall mac....IMO

I remember in the early days of DVD burning that Pinnacle had the DV500 (I could be a little off on the exact nomenclature) realtime??? editing card. And all the threads were about compatible hardware because there were only a few motherboards and video cards that would work in conjunction with the pinnacle card. If you wanted the card to work, Pinnacle and the forum members would tell you flat out that you buy the right hardware or you won't get any support. That's just the way it was and there was no political correctness about it.

Thankfully today, there are many talented people out there writing new kext files for us, but we are getting just a small taste of what it would be like if OSX were open code and had to deal with the plethora of MBs on the market today. One of the many things that Mac users seem to like about their systems is that if there's something wrong with theirs, it will be wrong on someone elses and Apple will fix it. That is not the case when it comes to PC motherboards. It's each person for him/herself.

Back in the early days of this forum, there were only a couple of suggested MBs. However, since many like myself want a 'latest greatest' PC first and then have that run OSX also, that's where the problems come in. Thank goodness for all the goodhearted coders out there that do their best to come up with solutions to the problems we make.

I know, and agree, and I therefore unstand if coders cant have time fix ALL MBs out there. Not that i mind Foxconn and albatrosses and all the rest of the boards, but lets face it if ppl would stick to a few less it would be easier for them thats all. I mean HOW many boards do we need? its just a luxury that ppl WANT gigabyte or ASUS etc. but i for one understand that time is not unlimited and its good to go on the bandwagon and set your mind at 2-3 options only :)

As i am sure you know, i choose the bad axe cause a lot of people use it and say its successfull, sure I would want the latest P35 from asus, but in the end i want it to work and have as little problems as possible. I dont want it to be each "person for himself" as that defeats the purpose of the net, forums and my whole idea of community :)

Why should someone experience the same hell as me??

I will GLADLY answer things once I know, but for know, its all learning!!
