So far Tiger has been running quite smooth on my Inspiron 5160 and I am impressed with its' performance.

Here is what works so far:

1. AGP Bridge. I had to modify the Infolist file for AppleI386PCI_2 to include the following string: pci8086,3581. Loaded the extension, did a kextcache -k and rebooted. Worked marvelous.

2. Macvidia driver. Added the tag of 0x032410de to the Infolist file, loaded the extension, kextcache -k and restarted the system. Fully detected as an Fx5200 Go 64MB.

3. Native resolution: Edited the com.apple.Bootlist file to add the tag of 1400x1050x32@60. A little fuzzy still, but works great non-the-less.

4. Broadcom 4401 10/100 NIC. Worked right out of the box.

What doesn't work and still working on it:

1. Broadcom 1350 b/a/g Wireless. Reading up on how to get that working.

2. Sigmatel 9753 / Intel ICH4 80801AA Audio. I have the AppleAC97 kext installed, but still working on Device ID's.

I'd like to say thanks to all informative posts and posters on this site that have helped me get to this point. :(

Wow! Glad to hear I'm not the only one working on converting an Inspiron 5160 to the better OS.

Thanks for pointing out the MacVidia drivers - I need to get my hands on those.

Interesting that we've had different experiences with other things though. For instance, my ethernet only seems to want to work in 10baseT mode - no dice at 100, for one reason or another. Oh well...

My sound, however, has worked hit & miss. After installing the SSE3 "unpatch", it didn't seem to want to recognize the drivers. After reading somewhere that results seem to be different, depending on shutting down & reloading into Mac versus restarting...I shut down the machine for a a few seconds, and then powered up again in OS X. Now they work! :-)

As for wireless, I'm using an external card - it's recognized by the machine as a BroadCom cardbus, but Airport doesn't seem to want to acknlowledge it...any thoughts?

Keep me posted on your success - I shall do likewise.

I've read another post that has a link to a precompiled Airport kext for Broadcom devices at this link: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=1655

I am going to give that a try tonight and see what happens. Sorry to hear that your 4401 NIC is not working at 10/100. My router indicates that I am connected at 10/100.

The AC97 is going to be harder as PCIdatabase.com has many device ID's for the 80801AA ICH4 audio.

Update: Audio works but is choppy at this time. The wireless works on and off, seems to be a powersaving issue.

Well, I'm using an Inspiron 5100. So far, work for me the built in etherneth, Broadcom 440x 10/100; wireless Linksys WPC54G; Intel 82801DB(M) ICH4(-M) - AC'97 Audio Controller. ATI Radeon don't working yet. Neiter have battery monitor: when I apply sse3->sse2 patch lost ACPI functionality.

When I start this project, was using 1GB RAM. But, after installing Tiger, (coincidence?) the DIMM Slot A died. So, I'm stuck with 512MB. It run smoothly, not so fast compared to having 1GB.

So far, is running native with a few applications: Mac Office 2004, VLC, Adium AIM, Adobe Acrobat 7 PRO, amule, azureus. Looking for VectorWorks, read in some posts that works ok.

When I get VectorWorks, will dump away mocosoft....

If you need help with AC97, ( I think we have similar audio chips), let me know. Maybe you can help me to recover ACPI funcionality.. you have working this?

Regards

I have the 5160 and cant get the 10/100 ethernet to work, but I could careless. If you have the 1350 card then you can get the wireless working.

Use the instructions here: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=1655

To fix the sound issue, go here: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...l_Inspiron_6150

I think the entry is supposed to be for the 5160 no 6150 (typo?) but it explains on how to fix the sound. Works perfect now.

My battery meter isn't showing up on this last install I did (it worked previously on another install) and I'm trying to fix that issue.

Ok, I figured out how to get my battery meter back, but the choppy sound is back. When you follow the instructions fixing the sound it takes away the battery meter. If you type "ACPI" instead of "x86PC" you get the battery meter, but choppy sound.

Oh and one other thing, if you change it to "X86pc" the 5160 won't automatically turn off when you goto shutdown, it will just sit there, but you can hit the power button once and it shuts off right away. If you choose to go with the "ACPI" if shuts off correctly when shutting down.

So there are some sacrifices in order to get non-choppy sound. Hope everyone was able to follow what I said

I don't know what I did yesterday.. today, when I start the pc, the battery icon appear itself! after reading about the "choppy sound" pointed by Ryo, try to use a few mp3, and is fine!.

So, I don't know what happens, buy I'm happy with that.

Another thing: when I start, because osx86 is sitting in the 3rd partition, I have to start with the parameter "platform=". Tried ACPI, X86PC, and both (till yesterday) gave me the same result. Today, I boot with "platform=|". Maybe this was the difference? will reboot and try again... but I don't wanna do it... don't want to loose the battery monitor!

I know what I did!!! Yesterday, I follow the guide for "disk performance" listed above in the forum. What I found is: When I install the .kext files detailed in the disk performance post, I no longer need to especify the parameter "platform". So, it boot natively. Woooraaah! Now I get the battery status monitor and the rest of ACPI functions...

Now, I just need to find VectorWorks, and dump away the mocosoft partition!!
