RobertX
...I've just installed this card as a replacement for R9 270X...not sure of correct setup(whether to use WEG or not , and boot args) Right now using no WEG . Card is recognized in system. A push in the right direction could sure help...thanks in advance
Slice
It should work out of box. Just set SMBIOS iMac19,1 or iMacPro1,1.
RobertX
thx Slice...my smbios is currently set to Imac17,1 ...which is ok for Monterey...I know if I want to update past Monterey, I'll have change that ...right now, without agdpmod=pikera, I get a system freeze when using GeekBench5...unsure why exactly...but all seems fine now ,matching or exceeding scores for this card...sleeps and wakes....and still using Clover 5145 just tried GeekBench5 again and it locked up system on opencl test, mouse still moves, but no interaction, had to force restart with power button... boot args are dart=0 alcid=1 agdpmod=pikera ? ...got rid of dart=0 and alcid=1 ..the first is to disable VT-d i think, and the second was for sound from hd 530...I'll try again with no boot args and see how that goes...🫠 ...ok, no boot args...GeekBench5 ran thru tests, opencl and metal without failure, no lock-up....tried GeekBench6 for kicks, and it still locks up system with mouse still active...Live and Learn Edited February 5 by RobertX
RobertX
...I believe I may have committed the cardinal sin of not looking before I leap...the MSI RX 570 has one 8-pin power connector... my power supply has 2 6-pin pci-e power cables...one 6-pin has a 2-pin clip-on. R9 270X had two 6-pin so I just used one 6-pin power cable with the 2-pin clip-on to power the RX 570...I believe this is an error...over @ macrumours I've read that I need a 2 6-pin to one 8-pin pci-e connector... Would this explain my system freezes(grey screen lock-up or system lock-up with frozen screen and active mouse) when using Geekbench? This has happened using firefox as well ...also when I connect with an active adapter DP/HDMI to HDMI television port I only have @30 fps. HDMI (RX 570) to HDMI(TV) I get @60 fps and system lock-up Edited February 7 by RobertX
BillDH2k
The 6-pin + 2-pin clip should work for the 8-pin connector. RX 570 should not overload the 6-pin wires. You might want to test your card under Windows to see if it is stable. The issue might be the compatibility for this MSI card. Not all RX 570/580 cards are made equal. I had a Sapphire RX 580 OC 8GB which ran perfectly under Windows, but would crash under Monterey as soon as it was under stress. So I switched to an another Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+, all problem went away.
RobertX
...still searching, just ran metal test in GeekBench6 ...noticed 306 W spike in total power consumption for RX570 also noticed I have 2 6-pin+2-pin pci-e power cables from psu ...so one 6-pin+2 gives me 150W +pcie gives me 225W , so perhaps still not enough power from just one 6-pin+2 ? ...trying the other 6-pin+2 cable now... STLVNUB
Mine Has 1 6 Pin
BillDH2k
Your RX 570 card only has one 8-pin connector, so it should be rated <= 150W + 75W (check MSI spec for your card). If its peak power goes higher, then it is up to the power supply to deliver that extra power (via the 6-pin cable). Depending on your power supply design, this may or may not be an issue. Dell T5820 power supply, for example, has all 12V output pins tied together. So it can deliver more power via a single PCI-E cable, as long as the wire gauge is sufficient to carry it. I'd suggest to test your card under Windows to see if the problem persist.
RobertX
hey STLVNUB ...I've done a semi-teardown here and found that my 2 6-pin+2 pcie power cables actually come from one braided cable...using EVGA 600W PSU I'm trying to find a not overclocked bios, and try loading thru clover ATI injection...just to test...right now using DP/HDMI active adapter to TV but only getting @ 30.00Hz. HDMI to HDMI on TV gives @60Hz Edited February 8 by RobertX

RobertX
so far so good macmini 8,1 smbios ran the luxmark3 bench tool, consistent power during test was 260 to 299W ... so maybe it's ok? ...gonna run thru a sleep and see if it wakes tomorrow...me too, fingers crossed 🥺 Edited February 8 by RobertX

RobertX
...thanks for the responses...I do believe the rx 570 that I started with was a complete burn-out,may be a miner? but this replacement has functioned fine over the last couple of days....can't seem to find anything that locks it up...like the other card, surely draws lots of power under load(270-300W according to HWMonitorSMC2) but that's coming from a 480W 12v rail, so I think I'm safe...Happy Trails 😄
