Hi everyone,

I'm struggling to boot into a Monterey USB installer from @MaLd0n (my setup is currently working fine with Mojave).

No luck so far, either from your Clover or OpenCore EFI folder. I'm trying to do a clean install on a new drive but I still end up with a kernel panic.

Here's what I tried:

CLOVER:

Adding/removing a few of my Mojave kexts to the ones from the X79 EFI folder:

AMDRadeonPro.kext

AppleIntelE1000e.kext

EFICheckDisabler.kext

FakeSMC.kext

NoVPAJpeg.kext

Adding/removing some of the Mojave boot args that are not in the Monterey config.plist

dart=0 keepsyms=1 debug=0x100 shikigva=32 shiki-id=Mac-7BA5B2D9E42DDD94 alcid=1

--

OPENCORE:

Initially going with your Desktop IvyBridge EFI -> failure

Removed agdpmod=pikera in boot-args as I don't have a NAVI card

Going with the setup from this thread: https://www.olarila.com/topic/21661-mac-os-montereybig-sur-on-huananzhi-and-other-x79-motherboard-and-powermanagement/

I attached a SS of what I'm getting when I try to boot with OpenCore

Thanks in advance!

Looking into the photo I have to suppose bootarg   npci=0x3000

For Ivy Bridge you need to have CryptexFixup.Kext. Update all your kext to latest and you can remove all boot args.

Not needed. I installed Monterey onto X79 IvyBridge-E5 without the kext.

Seems old kexts and bootloader version

try update all and remove all unnecessary things

Hi @MaLd0n and all, thanks for the help. The EFI folder comes from you, with all updated kexts. OC is v0.9.3, so I'm not sure where the old files come from. As to what to add/remove, all I've tried got me the same panic...

I'll try npci=0x3000 when I get back from holiday

Thanks

Hi @MaLd0n, @Slice, can you make any sense of this panic screenshot? Thanks

The panic is with CpuTscSync.kext. I know this panic so I used VoodooTSCSync.kext instead.

Hi @MaLd0n, @Slice,

Booting directly into the Monterey USB drive from F8 with VoodooTSCSync.kext instead of CpuTscSync.kext automatically switches to another boot option, I don't even enter setup.

Booting into my Mojave EFI partition and then selecting the Monterey USB drive from the Clover menu gets me to the Apple logo but I get stuck there. It's weird because I have the -v bootarg but I can't see verbose.

My setup doesn't agree with Clover_r5155, I had to roll back

Any ideas? Thanks

Hi @MaLd0n, @Slice,

I'm giving Monterey v12.7.6 another try. The latest Olarilla OC / Clover EFIs both give me panics and I still can't boot into the installer. I also tried the OC Mod version.

I added VoodooTSCSync from https://github.com/CloverHackyColor/VoodooTSCSync and set IOCPUNumber to 11. I tried a few values above 0 for TscSyncTimeout, but it doesn't change anything.

No luck with npci=0x3000.

Changing the SMBIOS to MacPro 6,1 doesn't work either. It's what I'm using on Mojave.

I suspect a graphics issue but I don't know where else to look. The config checker in OC Configurator doesn't seem to work with my setup:

Here's where I'm at, thanks for your help:

So here's what I'm getting after using the 3 ACPI files generated by OC Configurator's EFI Maker (SSDT-EC-DESKTOP, SSDT-PLUG-DRTNIA, SSDT-UNC).

After a few seconds it gets blurry with the 'No Way' sign. But the boot sequence definitely lasts longer.

Please let me know what you think @MaLd0n @Slice, thanks in advance!

First, Clover should be recent 5159.

Second, don't use VirtualSMC with Clover.

Third, I did some significant DSDT changes on Processor section and on USB section.

@noisegate you can have a look at this. It's from a very similar build (check my signature.) It may help, strip out what you don't need, add some serial numbers. It's an older Clover version, but it worked for me on Monterey.

@Slice what's the issue with VirtualSMC and Clover? I've been using it on my x299 rig for a long time without any obvious problems.

Why do you want VirtualSMC? Because someone convinced you?

FakeSMC.kext has a support in EFI environment as SMCHelper.efi.

VirtualSMC.kext also has such support as VirtualSMC.efi but it exists no more in distirbutions. It embedded into OpenCore.

As well SMCHelper.efi is embedded now in Clover.

In Clover we have full SMC circle: from macOS through FakeSMC they stored in NVRAM and then after reboot they are taken by Clover to emulate real SMC behaviour.

VirtualSMC?

Nope. It was quite a few years back, I think Rehabman was maintaining it at the time. Anyway, I was have some sort of issue with it, I tried VirtualSMC and it worked. It seemed there was more development taking place on it at the time so I simply stuck with it.

I wasn't aware that was how it worked.

... and that's what I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question🙂

Yeah, the usual stuff. However that wouldn't be what's preventing it from booting.

Sorry to hear that's not working for you, I'm surprised, Big Sur wasn't an issue on my x79 build.

Are you sure you have all the bios settings correct? MSR lock is turned off? (I don't know what Asus calls that in their bios, but it's likely in there somewhere.)

The usual trick is to pull all extra cards and unplug all unnecessary USB devices and give it a try.

I would have thought the Asus would be an easy install, they typically are.
