applemacman
So it's been a while since launch, I was wondering if anyone here had bought one of these things. What do you think about it? Is the bigger screen (as compared to the iPod) better? Or does the resolution bother you? Any scratching at all? How's the marketplace?
Paranoid Marvin
I'm not speaking from first hand experience (are they even out in the UK?) But logically, the screen may be bigger, but it won't look as good as the iPod's - the resolution is the same. And it's bigger - physically. Go for a Creative Zen Vision:M
robotskip
Doesn't the PSP have an even bigger screen and has the same resolution ? I don't see people raging about problems. Stop trying to downplay the bigger screen.
suleiman
lol..robotskip do you own a zune? I haven't read any of your other posts, but I'm starting to get the impression that you own a zune.

MadDoggyca
yas but not 7" to 9" with the same res on both. u wouldn't notice much of a diffrence
applemacman
So I finally went a bought one and have been comparing it to my iPod... and while the screen does look great, as far as video goes, the compression on the Zune looks no where as good as the qt compression on the iPod. But I love the built in radio feature, as well as the customizable themes. I had to get the white one though, cause I just wouldn't be able to look at it in brown or black (though those colors looks better in sunlight than indoors because of the doubleshot.) joe75
the psp has like a 470*280 or something. dont remember it exactly. PSP features a high-quality TFT LCD that displays full color (16.77 million colors) on a 480 x 272 pixel high-resolution screen

Stop trying to downplay the bigger screen. The PSP's resolution: 480x272. And the horrid screen on the Zune is the *least* of it's myriad of problems. Bartboy919
Own one and am happy with it, though there are some problems (NO PODCASTING!!), Microsoft announced they will do annual updates that will add more features. I read somewhere that the actual video chip inside the Zune was able to pump out HD video, but capped it at whatever it is now because of battery issues. If its betwwen an iPod and a Zune, I would go for the Zune because it's different and new. It also makes the market share of the Zune go up and makes apple pump out better features for its ipod faster. If you could wait, I would wait for a newer hardware revision that will come out in 6 to 8 months.

applemacman
According to Engadget, M$ was supposed to release support for Vista today. So I put my install cd into my comp w/ Vista on it, and after an update check, Zune actually started to install. But of coarse, as I should have expected, after the app was all finished installing... a lovely window telling me Vista was NOT supported popped up. WTF?!? A. Why isn't it supported? B. If it's not supported, why did it download the update...
cringemaster
The Zune doesnt impress me too much. It looks as though M$ has been eyeballing the iPods extremely succesful design (I've actually heard multiple people refer to regular mp3 players as iPods) and utilized its wheel/screen control simplicity. I have personnally used a zune for a few hours, messed around with it, and comparably, it has a slight edge over the ipod with features, but is just a little to bulky for my overstuffed pockets. and as far as the video res goes, it does seem a little fuzzy compared to the ipods screen. i was watching the same video on both screens and the ipod had a much sharper look. as far as the pumping out HD, thats a complete myth. the Zune was originally able to pump out about 800x600, but was capped to a lower res because of battery life issues. the ipod is able to pump out 640x480 to an external screen and still keeps it battery life pretty well. if you are looking to buy one of them, id go with the ipod, even if your a windows user. compatability is the same and the ipod is much easier to manage. also creative mp3 players are not to bad either, but they also have their own quirks (but they are somewhat reliable). but the real selling point of the ipod is the customer support. i dropped my ipod once, went to www.depot.info.apple.com, and had a new one within a month. then again, i ripped my headphone cables, went to the site, and had a new pair within a few weeks (of course the old ones were sent back in a well packed box). Thi3f
I just got a Zune today, and I have to say I am very impressed with it. Granted it has it's flaws (No Mass Storage Drive?!) it is quite sturdy. Compared to my 4th gen ipod in its Jlo case the Zune really doesn't look that much thicker. The finish is nice and doesn't scratch as easy (My ipod back was scratched within several hours). The only other complaint I have is the long time it took to sync the first time. Yes it had thousands of songs to sync the time it took was obnoxious. I'd say the Zune has a lot of potential as long as M$ holds to its promises of updates. Suzuka
My brother got a Zune a week ago, he returned it, he said it was one of the worst MP3 players he'd ever seen, he got a Zen Vision M and he's happy with that

br0adband
Bartboy1919: Just noticed that "Re-Elect Gore 2008" image in your post... that's priceless. I have a lot of respect for the man, even more so now that I've seen "An Inconvenient Truth." Very powerful movie with everything good and nothing really bad to say, it's all true and very useful if only us stupid humans would get off our asses and do something about it. </off_topic> bb
Bartboy919
yeah, I saw his movie twice in theaters because it was so great. You also seem to catch things you may not have noticed during the second time around

If it's not supported, why did it download the update... Vista isnt out yet, they wont support it until they have to (aka, when its not 99% warez copys) so thats stupid... but idk what the update is about.... ive used the zune quite a bit (although i do not own one) and i have to say, the screen is just as good as the ipod but bigger, the controls arnt as nice as the ipods click wheel (although they did make theirs look like it had one... ) seemed a bit less scratch prone, a little more durable.... and as far as vista, why do people keep bitching about support... ITS NOT OUT YET.... so why would they care if warezer's have their hardware support early (although i do have to admit... i do love those warez.... downloaded brazillian vista rtm, idk why though cause im american.... but i do know some spanish so it wasnt that bad... but it was quite impractical... but it would keep my dad off my pc ) and... well.... free vista upgrade... coming asap but the zune is one of the best ipod competitors ive seen, although i have no need to go switching (although ill NEVER buy another ipod, pos keeps breaking at the most random times, and no its not me... so dont even try to blame it on my stupidity.... because im not an idiot.) applemacman
It seems that Zune only runs on Vista RTM or later. The reason the Vista/Zune thing is such a big deal to me is because Micro$oft released MILLIONS of Vista betas (legally) that last well into this year to people all over. Now, the people who are going to buy the Zune are probably the people who are also big enough fans of the company to run a Vista beta... quite possibly even as a main OS. So why would you alienate the very people who support you by not supporting a product you supported them with?

So youll buy the final release thats why, and that explains it.... i wasnt so much pissed at you as some other people who are whining about how certain drivers arnt that great and that kind of thing... no one releases finalized drivers until the products out for the most part.... and sucks, i cant believe your still running beta 2, they gave me a key and a download and it was gone off of my hard drive soo quick... less than a week i believe... and i do agree with you there, but it really is so that youll buy the update... oh, and rtm or later... lol release to manufacturing is the final product... there is no later sorry your zune wont work for you, and dont take my advice with this but download rtm with the beta 2 crack.... its badddd lol (well, why not, i want your product to work and you deserve it to... ill see what i can do...)
