Hi folks,

This is a great place for all loads of information on this topic... thanks!

I was wondering if somebody out there can tell me if what I gather about all this is correct....

Up till recently I have been a user of both PCs and Macs (G4, MDD, Mac Mini) and now I am thinking of turning one of my PCs into a OS X machine so I can check for OS X capability on web sites etc.

I have installed JaS 10.4.7 DVD ISO selecting both SSE2 and SSE3 - the install was fine. Now is the only difference between the full Apple DVD of OS X and JaS's is that the kernel needs to be modified to let OS X install on non Apple hardware? Is there something on the Apple hardware that the kernel looks for to allow it to run (boot, install etc etc)? And if so does this effect any other parts of the OS in terms of usability and stability?

I know that updates from Apple's Software Updater cannot be directly applied as this will change the modified kernel... but how about certain devices that work in OS X on Mac but not on JaS's release - for example I have a firewire audio device that uses drivers built in to OS X - with JaS's release under system profiler the device can be seen but not accessible (not showing up as an audio device) so are there certain drivers missing from the modified release?

Also is there a 10.4.8 update out there - I found the Intel SSE2 10.4.8 ISO - but the download was slow - so I thought an Update version would be faster.

Thanks again!

Nopea, as far as I know to make a hackingt0sh DVD you need the modified kernel, the decrypted framework and some patch to the framework to remove CPU ID checking. You also need the modified driver (or older version of those drivers) to make your devices full-functioning.

In the recent kernel, some portion of state-of-the-art codes have been intergrated in, so it reduces the complex of patched system.

I hope that enough info for you. Please searching and study before you ask something like this.
