Apple may have an AMD-based notebook computer in the works. Taiwan component makers have stated that there is an increase in orders for certan capacitators that are intended to be used in an AMD-based Apple notebook. Digitimes has the the details.

Taiwan passive component makers are witnessing an aggressive increase in orders for high-capacitance multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), with most of the MLCCs having a capacitance of 22?F, and being for use in an AMD-based Apple notebook, sources at the makers noted. For this new notebook, about 70 22?F MLCCs will be required, with Japan-based Murata Manufacturing, Taiyo Yuden and TDK being the three major suppliers, the sources added.

Speculation that AMD and Apple will team up has been fueled by statements made by AMD CEO Hector Ruiz in September, when he noted that the two companies will eventually do business with each other. The merger between AMD and ATI also helped make the speculation more convincing, as ATI delivers graphics solutions that are specialized for Apple G5 PCs.

If Apple does start to use AMD processors, this may have a drastic effect on Apple's partnership with Intel.

God I hope not.

"Apple will NEVER use AMD!!!". who said this??? even that is Jobs you should remember the famous Bill's statement: who need more than 8MB RAM!!~!?!?

Infact, the AMD Turion give the same performance as Pentium M with much lower price.

Right, the turion gives the same performance as Intels last generation mobile chip at the same price.

Members have OS X86 to run on AMD computers, so I don't think many software changes would be necessary.

Positive News for OS X86.With Cheaper AMD Notebook Mac OS X could have increase its market share.

By releasing its operating system more often and at a slightly lower cost, Apple Computer is better able to maximize its profitability in the OS field compared with its rival, Microsoft.

I really hope that Apple will release AMD powered computers

most of you "NOOOOOOOOOO" guys should have to understand the followings:

1)There are Apple fans, Intel fans, and AMD fans (of course, someone can be apple&intel or apple&amd fan). Each one wants different things from his processors (which is not only about the processor itself, characteristics, cost, perfomance, but it's about personal experiences, support, future-plans, company policies etc). Personaly, i dislike 2 things in Intel, company policy and pricing (you have to admit that intel processors that did the same or worse job than athlon 64 cost higher than the AMD one, just how i have to admit that core 2 duo >>>> athlon64) By using intel processors Apple has kept me (and a lot more customers i guess) from buying an macbook. Apple may have done a lot of mistakes in the past, but i think they have learnt not to turn their backs on a marketshare

2)COMPETITION IS IMPORTANT. Of course, apple can make non-competitive models between amd and intel (the most important reason is so that the relationship with intel will not brake, if they can persuade intel that the amd models do not affect the intel models' sales). However, the slightest form of competition is always good, and if a particular model turns out to sell more than one other, there will need to be repricing (e.g. amd model sells more = intel will have to do something to make their model sell = cut down the price of the CPUs they give to Apple, asking apple to lower it's overall price, in order to be more competitive)

3)Compatibility. For all of us with athlon os x86 that need to wait for a release compatible to our software, things will get a lot easier

Anyway, as a conclusion, i would like to say that since Apple does not dump intel, there is no reason for you to moan and whine, on the contrary, IF, i repeat IF, apple does indeed chose to make an AMD mobile, it gets a lot better for AMD fans, and it remains the same (or better) situation for intel fans. In any case, you have nothing to lose from this, and it can only affect you in a good way

That's my personal opinion ofc anyway :D

For those gullible enough to believe this nonsense, try reading AppleInsider's discussion:

http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread....;threadid=68520

Editor's note: DigiTimes has not been particularly accurate in its predictions of future Apple product directions and technologies

EDIT:

Also, see MacRumors discussion: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=252707

Readers should note that Digitimes remains notoriously inaccurate with their rumors.

Well, as already noted, AMD-based notebook could give hope for my ATI x200 based Amilo: still struggling to get CI/QE on my Radeon, ethernet and sound fully working. :D

I'll keep hoping...

I also agree that competition and price lowering can bring Apple much more market/money.

I wouldn't buy a Mac Book with AMD chip but it's very clear that Apple has turn out to be a PC manufacturer. Now I understand why Steve Jobs insist on comparing Apple to Dell. Apple is becaming day by day more like a Dell to me (and of course I just love Apple by far).

But I think that's good for all of us because if Apple start using both AMD an Intel products they would probably fight for best prices and that kind of competition reflect to us as lower prices and better hardware.

I do not see it specifically saying AMD CPUs, even if it is AMD chipsets it could be anything.

Just a quick note that the name "ATI" is no longer being used. And that AMD is used to refer to AMD CPUs, ATI RADEON video cards (yes ATI RADEON is a brand now, not just RADEON), and AMD chipsets (No longer ATI chipsets).

Just an example, former-ATI employees and "ATI" locations no longer process or work with ANYTHING (document, packaging, etc) that has the ATI logo on it. Example, former-ATI, now AMD employee goes and hands over a document to his manager with ATI logo on (well he was working for "ATI" till a few weeks ago), manager doesn't accept the document because of logo! true story.

Same with partners, they refer to the entity as AMD.

It took AMD less than a week to remove every and any sign of red ATI logo at their locations !!! All the way down to letter heads, badges, ....

So Apple Notebooks using AMD chipset, could mean utilizing AMD-based integrated or dedicated graphics. As we all know Intel's graphics used in MacBook (Intel GMA 950) is pethatic in terms of 3D performance by today's standards. Or maybe even using AMD-based chipsets/controllers on server type Apple systems.

So there can be different interpertations on this. Don't just jump and saying "NOOOOO" or saying "YEAAAH", grow up!

Well I thought AMD was better than Intel until just now ???

Even in all the games AMD seemed better and even for Linux so why not for OSX, but we'll see if it ccompetes with Conroe
