I have the same on-board sound, and it doesn't seem to be supported by HDA patcher yet, however Azalia modding works fine, at least gives stereo output...
I upgraded to 10.4.9 (used the intel sse3 combo update) and ran the patch ... It didn't work, but this time it didn't crash. Actually, it didn't do nothing. Here's the output from the AppleHDAPatcher:

		  AppleHDA Patcher - 2006/2007 Taruga v1.15
_______________________________________________________
	  Codec	: Analog Devices AD1988B
   Vendor Id	: 0x11d4198b
Subsystem Id	: 0x104381f6
_______________________________________________________

I guess I won't be using sound on P5W64 for now.

what kind of kernel were you using on 10.4.8? It has issues with the Semthex one

Yes, the Semthex 8.8.1. I installed the Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2].iso.

How do I install other kernels? How do I even get them?

The motherboard p5b-VM doens't work at all. i tried the ubunto codec dump too (after trying the suse's codec file).

it seems to recognize the hardware elements, but nothing happens. no sounds, the sounds volume adjustbar is disabled.

i tried the original 8.8.1 kernel on a fresh install and on the 8.9.1 kernel using jas 10.4.9 update.

i think i tried all applehdapatcher and codec file and kernel combinations...

try googling for DaemonES or Mifki kernel, that's how i got them, but 1988b is not supported i think, at least I never got it to work with HDA patcher

I seem unable to get the AD1981HD audio dump in Linux.

I booted my ThinkPad T60p laptop to Ubuntu 7.04 Live CD and it recognized everything, including the audio with both Analog & digital options + microphone.

However when I issue the commands

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 >> dump.txt

all I get is a new line and a blinking cursor, no file gets created and it just sits there.

All the "files" in /proc/asound show as size "0"!

What am I doing wrong?

UPDATE: Problem fixed! See my follow-up post HERE

I have installed this 1.15 patch which half works - Audio only thru speakers even with a pair of Headphones plugged in.

10.4.9 JAS on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4487

T5500 Core 2 Duo 1.g7ghz

2gb ram

100gb Drive for Micro$oft Vista

120gb Drive for OS X

There is only a MIC/Line In jack as well as a an Audio Out jack. Some where I read that Toshiba implementation of realtek audio is slightly different then the standard set up. As for ID the exact realtek chip used is 862?

However, it only detects as Built In Speakers.

Volume control OK.

Line/Mic IN, No controls

BOOM, when I connected the Line IN, it BLASTED my ears, even I reduced the system volume, IT WAS VERY LOUD.

Internal MIC,

Not even detected...

Please help us to fix this issues.

Otherwise, this is OK.

Congratulations on anyone with working sound.

By the way: Anyone with a working 10.4.8 (including patched HDA) can safely update to 10.4.9.

Using the 10.4.8 patched AppleHDA under 10.4.9 (SSE3 with SSE3 8.9.1 kernel) works fine.

nemster that sounds very borked.

And the guy who can't even start the patcher, delete it and redownload. Also try a couple of older versions.

OK, I managed to get the Linux Dump! I have therefore updated my original post HERE

It seems that under Linux the Audio on a ThinkPad laptop will NOT work right if you have turned off the MODEM in the BIOS. Sure enough my modem was off (who uses dial-up these days?) and that was the problem.

Once I turned ON the modem in the BIOS and rebooted the "cat /proc/asound/Intel/codec#0 > /tmp/AD1981HD_dump.txt" command worked like a charm and I got my dump file.

For anyone interested, I have attached my Audio Dump file to this post. It should work for most Thinkpads T60/X60/R60

Now to try to patch the audio and see if it works.

Since I originally messed with the AppleAzalia to get Audio to work I might not have all the files I need. I have since deleted AppleAzalia.kext but what other kext files do I need to delete or have ready and available for the patcher to work? Does anyone know?

NO DICE! Patcher launches, I dragged and dropped the codec dump (.txt file attached here) on the patcher icon, but NOTHING happens and the main patcher window just says "Please drag and drop..."

Any suggestions?

need help! I have a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4587

The drivers for this computer is actually for the Realtek ALC268 (Didn't realize that something like that existed)

Tried to let computer pick up device on Ubuntu, but it did not pick it up right. Picked it up as a ALC880. Because of that, sound did not work in ubuntu. Wasn't able to get a dump. If anyone knows anything on how to get ALC268 to work, It would be very much appreciated

These come from Vista Premium about the ALC268

Hello everyone, my first post here.

I have a question about this HDA solution. Right now i'm using the 10.4.8 Jas release and my sound works like a charm, but when i upgrade OSX to 10.4.9 my sound plays chuckled, it plays sound for half a second and stops half a second and sounds distorted. Does this have anything to do with the 10.4.9 kernel or is there something else that messes up the sound? Anyone else had this problem?

Check your FBS, it must be 1/4 of what it says in the BIOS, e.g. 667 mhz=166 mhz, if not you must edit the boot.apple.com.plist, go to Tutorials and search how to do it. B)

What AppleHDAPatcher messes up?

I'm trying to get audio working on a friend's Dell with Semthex 8.8.1.

It only caused Kernel Panics (as stated in the main post) so I tried to patch AppleHDA.kext in my iMac.

It messed everything up (as I expected) but I thought that just restoring AppleHDA.kext would be enough.

Well, I was completely wrong.

I have reinstalled 10.4.9 Combo and it didn't do the trick neither.

What else does it patch the AppleHDAPatcher?

Integrated speakers and microphone are completely missing.

(BTW, it didn't work with the other computer)

Thanks in advance!!

You have to delete ALCinject.kext and replace AppleHDA.kext, that´s all.

Is there somewhere a source of AppleHDA?

The patcher didn't work for us, guys with hp notebooks, so we need to find a way to modify the binary. I noticed that when AppleHDA is loaded it loads the generic driver personality, not the moded AD1981HD stuff...my opinion.

With AppleAzalia things are a little better...the kext loads, the controller is initialized (paradoxal in the Info.plist of the azalia controller the only device is an Intel ICH6, mine is ATI "437b").I even see the sound output in the pref panel, but not in the system profiler, and i have no sound. Is there a solution?
