After years of waiting, Windows Vista has finally been completed. Yesterday, Microsoft gave a press release announcing that Windows Vista has been finished and released to manufacturing. As planned, we will (hopefully) be seeing Vista on January 30th, 2007. Microsoft has more info on the RTM:

Release to manufacturing signifies the completion of our development work and the start of the next phase for Windows Vista. Windows Vista is the highest-quality version of Windows that we’ve ever produced. We’ve had more people test more builds than previous development cycles, and the result is that we received more feedback than ever before.

That being said, Windows Vista’s journey is not yet done. PC makers, device manufacturers and software developers can finalize work on their products and applications to ensure great customer experiences when Windows Vista becomes available -- to our volume license customers this month and consumers on January 30, 2007.

So now that Vista is out (well, kinda), what's Apple's next move: a surprise release at Macworld or those "top secret" features Steve mentioned?

Vista is done. Oh God help us, and I am not being funny. I am system admin and I DREAD having to role this out and I think my parent company is going to wait for a year or so, thank God! XP is still buggy in certain instances and they are going to Vista, ok. To me XP was like 95 and Windows 2000 was like 98. To me, I think 2000 is most stable. I use it here at work. Most use XP, but I haven't upgraded (spend more on the employees since I don't need the latest and greatest). I am due for an upgrade and I hope when I do, I can get Vista, dual boot, and see how bad it is and tell everybody to stay away., or wait for at least a year till SP1 or later.

I agree. PC users think XP is the best thing ever happened (just because is the - first and - most stable Windows). To run DX10 most people will have to do a hardware upgrade, so who´s waiting for that?

I don't like vista. It was promissed to be a revolutionary os. But then M$ dropped the most exciting features like WinFS, things like instant searching was implemented in other os's. You can have it with 3rd party software in xp as well. So it's just a shadow of what it could have been. So for now i'll stick with xp and osx86. At least until leopard hits the stores.

I'm not going to try it in my box...

I think there's no competitive reason between Windows and Mac OS X... Windows is the OS of gamers... The *nix world is growing faster... and the ambition of getting a Macintosh is even increasing... People like its style... And it's philosophy, that's why this project exists...

So... My conclusion is: Windows will fall...
