It “Improves the MacBook’s internal monitoring system and addresses issues with unexpected shutdowns. This update is recommended for all MacBook systems, including those that received warranty repair.” It’s very interesting how it is recommended for those who have already gotten repairs. Although new heat-sinks seem to have done the job earlier, this update claims to “resolve this issue.” More information can be found at Apple’s support page. i1sam Posted October 27, 2006 Share Posted October 27, 2006 Hope this will also solved the issue on closing the lid and the MB does not go to sleep mode.. my MB is enroute to Apple Center for the 3rd time now after spending 52 days on apple center dur to RSD and NOW powerbrick does not charge the MB and not going to sleep mode on "closed lid". my amazing MacBook. munky Posted October 27, 2006 Share Posted October 27, 2006 how can they solve a hardware issue (thermal sensor wires melting) with a firmware update? unless it makes the fans blow 100% all the time? maybe this update causes the CPU not to shutdown at all, which isnt really any better. Another User Posted October 28, 2006 Share Posted October 28, 2006 I had the RSD and got my MB replaced the first time and the second time my heatsink... New heatsink is working for week now. No temperature changes from first mb to newer mb or with new heatsink. The new SMC seems to be like the 1.1... it makes your fan blow at low speeds all the time keeping the machine @ 56c average. I believe Apple made it for: a. Cover their as* from future RSD issues = keeping machine cooler will avoid first revision heatsinks Macbooks with no RSD issues to develop them. b. Make all Macbooks cooler. I didn't apply the first SMC update on my new motherboard because I didn't like it using the fan all the time. munky Posted October 30, 2006 Share Posted October 30, 2006 Another: I agree - all early macbooks certianly have the RSS problem - its only a matter of whether the machines will ever be stressed enough to melt the wires from the thermal diodes. RSS is caused by a design flaw in the thermal solution of the macbook, and only physical replacement can repair it properly. i would urge anyone with a macbook made any earlier than, say, week 39 to contact AppleCare and get the heatsink replaced. Beach Posted November 7, 2006 Share Posted November 7, 2006 For two weeks ago I finally got my MacBook, but I didn't buy it myself. I just just borrowed it from my school (I must return it Januari 2009 ). but instantly the MacBook turn itself off, almost all the time. My teacher told me that I should go to the Service Provider... well the day before Apple had released the McaBook SMC Firmware Update 1.1, but I thought that I would repair it anyway. One week went i had heard nothong, called the Service and they hadn't start yet. 3 hours later I got an e-mail - the MacBook was ready. They updated the firmware and had let the machine run for 2 hours with full load and it had never turn off. Now they want to charge me because it wasn't a hardware-failure... What do the firmware do?
