I know there are alot of threads going on about this, but most are technical and that is great. People are running with this new 10.4.8 kernel. NOW, he is the huge question I think is on alot of peoples minds:

What does this new 10.4.8 kernel mean for OSX86?

Plain and simple. What does this kernel do, that the old kernel does not? Will this open up possibilities of running on more/older chips, ie: SSE only? Many questions and I think simple answers are needed. I know in time a full, new, install dvd will come and when it does people need to know what the differences are. Thanks.

well basically with new kernel- better support for new kexts/drivers that come along with it, that in turn would provide a more stable and more optimized osx, also better support for new hardware- which are similar to mac osx.. and im hoping there's good news for people with old hardware, like me (sse2, etc) that the new kernel would be more accomodating and even have better patches/ emulation to run osx better... hehe hope the new itunes would run natively.. :gathering:

Not trying to sound smart/mean guiyoforward , but this doesn't help much.

tyre777, that is good info. So far we know, in basic terms, that the new kernel is more like a real mac in driver support. Ok, that is good. Also rosetta will allow better emulation and maybe run apps not available on hackintosh? Nice.

Kernel is much like a heart to the OS. Its much like getting a new 'heart' to the OS. Then it could pump more bloody , its pretty much replacing the old one. With that , there are lot of improvement , for example driver support , bugfixes and stuff like that. Currently , we are still on OSX 10.4.4's Kernel [even though you're using OSX 10.4.7,.8 ,.5 . Its still on the same kernel , unless you have updated yours. In simple words , its like a new heart to the operting system. This new heart allows PowerPC applications to run faster [ the umph they need , I have heard Battlefront now works pretty good on the new kernel] , and lots of bug fixes.....

In Windoze Terms , its service pack. Its much like a service pack ! [i know its the wrong term , but I am helping our friend to get a picture here]

It's all about getting as close to real mac as possible (w/o buying one).

Install 10.4.4 virgin.

Install official 10.4.8 combo update

Install new kernel and restore smbios from 10.4.4

Reboot and it works.

Now add kext for your particular devices (here comes patches and trouble).

BTW, don't even try this unless you have very compatible mobo.

haha nicely said xtraa.. :thumbsdown_anim:
