rominator
Decided to start a separate thread. Please post results, I'm curious how much faster it will be on Hacks. And curious if it can be a boot volume now. Thanks to JimJ740. A free driver for everyone to use, please respect the legal document for continued freebies. http://www.macvidcards.com/nvme-driver1.html
Smallersen
I installed the kext on my X99 Deluxe i7 5960 system. As this hardware does not support El Capitain it´s still on Yosemite. Yosemite system information says: NVMeGeneric.kext loadable. So it seems this driver could also support Yosemite. Did anybody already try? I still do not have a NVME device, would like to buy a Samsung 950.
rominator
I tested it in Yosemite, it works but was much slower IIRC.
Smallersen
What board/processor did you use? Which SSD? Native NVMe slot or PCI card? What is the speed in El Capitan and how was the speed in Yosemite? Did you manage to boot from NVMe? Would be nice to get more information about your experiences. rominator
I am testing on "Designed in Cupertino" Macs so no booting for me. Speeds were 2/3 or so of El Cap speeds, but I'm pretty sure JimJ wrote it for El Cap so not surprising.
Smallersen
I tried it with success: Installed a Samsung 950 Pro 512 on my Asus X99 Deluxe with 5960x processor using the onboard slot, running Yosemite (!). Absolutely no configuration in bios necessary, just partition with hd utility.Hassle free till now, super speed with the driver NVMeGeneric.kext. The driver is working perfectly with Yosemite - and this board at least.I dont want it as boot volume, so I didnt try this. As there is a normal EFI partition on the disk, it should work. Update: Tried to boot, no luck, stuck at "PCI configuration begin". But perfect as work volume - and for aplications and cache.
AppleIIGuy
My GA-Z97X-UD5H can now boot from my 950 EVO NVME. I have it in a 4x pcie adapter due to the m.2 slot only being 2x on the motherboard

AppleIIGuy
but it is bootable? Yes it boots from the NVMe drive. UEFI Bios sees the drive after it is formatted. Clover sees it also.

AppleIIGuy
If your bios has nvme support. (which it should). I believe the m.2 slots on 97x motherboards are PCIe x2. At least mine is that is why I have a PCIe X4 to M.2 card

magnifico
@ AppleIIGuy but you can install on the ssd , that you inject the kext from clover? And during installation see the ssd nvme?
AppleIIGuy
I don't see why it wouldn't work if you put the nvme driver on the usb install stick
magnifico
sorry ... but you have not tried to do a clean install on this nvme? It seems strange to me .... and I'll explain why: I do not see the disk from the BIOS ... and yet ... I BIOS has support for nvme. So You have cloned osx on It? And You have set To bios. .The first boot?

iStigPL
OK I've tested the driver with Intel 750 PCI-E 400GB and there are some questions. 1. in log file I've noticed "unable to map BAR4 resources" - is it important ? 30.12.2015 11:18:13,000 kernel[0]: NVMeGeneric: com_MinnowStor_NVMeDisk::start 30.12.2015 11:18:13,000 kernel[0]: NVMeGeneric: This driver must be licensed for commercial use. 30.12.2015 11:18:13,000 kernel[0]: NVMeGeneric: This driver may not be posted, distributed, bundled, shared, or sold without the written consent of MinnowStor.com 30.12.2015 11:18:13,000 kernel[0]: NVMeGeneric: This driver is free for personal, non-commercial use. 30.12.2015 11:18:13,000 kernel[0]: NVMeGeneric: No guarantee of performance, suitibility, or warranty expressed or implied. onmybikedrunk
Thanks you JimJ740! Thanks Rom for all your work too... Been reading your posts for years over at netkas... Anyway, got my Samsung 950 Pro up and running (boot volume - 10.10.5/Clover) via the Asus X99 Sabertooth machine listed in my sig. This particular MB features a x4 M.2 slot on-board. Still no El Capitan on the 5960X (we're trying!) but works rather well in Yosemite. Not sure I'll keep it as a boot disk though. Getting around 2400 read and 1500 write. That's with AJA Standalone test. Since I'm on a 5960X I had to do the install via an SSD Dock on my real Mac then throw the drive in my Hack and next cloned it to the NVMe. Installed Clover in the EFI with the NVMeGeneric.kext in the 10.10 folder with "Inject Kexts" set to "Yes". Couldn't be happier, especially since these were on sale at Frys last week for $300 for the 512GB version. Side note: Speaking of 10.11 refusing to boot on the 5960X... a group of 5960X users have gotten together with the sole purpose of finding a coder to help us out with the issue. The contributor that puts in the most time/help to get this solved gets a donated 5960X, 16Gb 2666 DDR and some cash to help further their work. Not a bad deal... We started a thread here on IM -- plenty more details there. We started a gofundme to eliminate the phony folks who swear to donate to the coder that solves the issue. Instead it's all there up front. Cash donations can be seen from the link in my sig. Thanks JimJ! Edited January 2, 2016 by onmybikedrunk
Smallersen
Hi onmybikedrunk Did you try to reboot several times? I have a Asus x99 Deluxe with 5960x and 950 Pro NVMe. After a lot of trying I managed to boot from 950 Pro, but only twice. Would you mind to post your Clover config here, which EFI drivers you are using, which kexts and so on. Would be very helpful. It seems while booting from NVMe 950 my system does not see the BSD subsystem, so stucks at "Configuration begin". Dont know how to solve this. No problem when booting from a normal SSD with same settings.

Smallersen
Yes, of course. I also tried to boot with just the 950 Pro connected, or loading EFI from normal SSD and switch in Clover boot screen to 950 Pro, without success. But this is strange: The 950 Pro has only a entry "UEFI OS"without addition in BIOS, while the normal SSD is named "UEFI OS (P7: Samsung 850 ..." Smallersen
Yes, Clover folder is on EFI partition of 950 Pro. There is a entry in Bios accordingly to the P... named entrys "N1: Samsung 950 Pro..." which is not usable as UEFI boot at all (of course). The "UEFI OS" entry does not have the addition "UEFI OS (N1:Samsung 950...) . I start to think it is not a BIOS problem but a Clover/Kext problem not recognizing the BSD root system. See attached file where the file system entrys are missing. Missing: BSD root:...hfs:...VM Swap Subsystem is ON
