Nevvermidn
Hello everybody, I managed to follow all your nice instructions on how to install El Capitan and it worked perfectly fine so far - thank you! I first installed 10.7 and then updated to 10.11 with the help of the App Store. Now I wanted to change the resultion from 1024x768 to something higher. However, there is no other option. I installed VMware tools via VM-->Install VMware tools... but it didn't help at all. I found some videos online but they didn't help either. What am I doing wrong? Nevvermidn
Thanks for the replies. I installed the clear version but the problem is still present. Does that mean I have to contact VMware in oder to get this tool to change the resolution? Is it already available on some other website? I can't contact VMware since I bought workstation from a 3rd party. Edit: I contacted VMware using a complete different topic. However, after some time a guy from VMware called me and sent me the file Thanks a lot for your help guys!

Nevvermidn
Since VMware did not tell me that I am not allowed to share it, go ahead
=)(=
The issue seems to be this: System Integrity Protection , it makes vmware tools fail to install properly. Solution posted on other forums: Reboot into Recovery Mode by restarting VM and holding down Command+R until the Apple logo appears on your screen. Click Utilities > Terminal. In the Terminal window, type in csrutil disable and press Enter. Restart. Uninstall VMware tools if you have it installed, then re install and go back into recovery mode, open terminal and do csrutil enable. For me this was not enough, it still showed 1024x768 as the only res, but when I resize the VMware window and go "View > Fit Guest Now" it changes resolution but will set the resolution based on how large the window is, so you still can not select from a list of resolutions. Fullscreen mode also works and gives you native res. I would love to but I don't understand how this "My Media" stuff in the forum works. There is no upload button? Would be great if anyone could tell me. Here is a temporary DropBox solution: https://goo.gl/PWS3lo Link is dead, can you upload file again?
