Razlor
Well, I found temporary solution for this trouble on russian community Applelife. For my GTX 650: I use Chameleon v2.2 with Graphics Enabler=Yes and string from GTX 775M in to Device Properties: MacModel change no needed. I use MacPro3,1. Now, I see my GTX 650 1024 in system info as GTX 775M 2048, but all tests detect my video correctly: as GTX 650. And it`s work: no frequency freezes in Quicklook, LuxMark e.t.c. Please test this method and reply. Good luck! This it not working here, either.
Riggs Martin
Instaled Chameleon v2.2 ... In my case on GTX 650ti with this string i got grey screen... =( Grey screen? Tested on 10.9.1? You must have 10.9.2 DP for correct string injection. Update your system for last DP and try again.

Yes... it was 10.9.1 tested with 10.9.2 DP... this time boot is ok... but card still stuck at high frequency after using preview... =(

Hackmodford
I have the same issue with a GTX 760 4GB. If I restart everything is fine. Open Preview to view an image and the gnu is locked at 1.08GHz

Hackmodford
LOL I guess you're right. Weird that before opening preview it was at 130MHz Here's the card I have. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125470
zhuangzi23
running: ga-z77n-wifi 3570K MSI GTX 660 OC and the latest Mavericks Beta (13C39) Finally -> Everything allows the GPU to dial down to 324/648 (core/memory) (photoshop, etc.) *except* Preview. Preview still ramps my GPU up to 1/6.0GHz the instant I open up an image in preview. I have to reboot to get the GPU do go back down to normal speeds. However, even the latter is an improvement because, previously, my system would boot into full GPU speed without opening any apps. Research indicates that Apple has change several GPU related kexts, but I think one last bit of tweaking is needed. I'm more than pleased with this evolution and see no need to continue to run 10.8.5 - finally. fwiw: I'm using multi.... 6.01 (the latest iteration causes random KPs on boot) and 6.0.1067 HWMonitor and the latest/greatest FakeSMC edit: This time around, I slightly changed my install method. After wiping the SSD/reinstalling Mavericks - I transferred my apps from a Time Machine backup -> Then I updated mavericks via App store, then installed the beta (via the App store via the Beta installer helper), and only then did I use multi.... to install the /extras folder...which I promptly moved to the EFI partition. This is actually the smoothest iteration of OS X I've ever had. I thought ML was running well, but, now, for the first time (somehow?) my ethernet even actually works immediately upon reboot and wake from sleep..when previously it would take about 15 seconds before becoming active. yokonunz
Issues are not completely solved in 10.9.2 build 39 but seems to be better! CPU slowed down also with preview when viewing multiple pdf files. It remained stuck opening a JPG image!

Riley Freeman
Yeah no change here either. It's starting to look like Fermi Freeze 2.0.
Hackmodford
The gnu is locked at 1.08 GHz (picture of the animal Gnu with a speed limit sign of 1.08) And.... now I get it So yeah... it does affect me if I open an image in preview.

Razlor
The underlying problem might date back to ML. Yesterday, i tried some OpenCL-Applications under 10.8.5. Preview, Office and other applications did not cause the frequencies to freeze at base level like in Mavericks; however: OpenCL OceanWave and Luxmark did. Gringo Vermelho
That's pretty clever, I'm going to have to try that. Thanks for sharing. Did you try patching with 01? Riley Freeman
Nice. Unfortunately this string isn't in 10.9.2 or 10.8.5 so I can't try it out here. And I don't have enough skills to work out the correct strings for these.

yokonunz
So you basically disabled OpenCL on your card? What are the cons? +1 right question.... With a normal use there are neglegible performance losses.. and consider that OpenCL implementation is buggy.. so... do you think opencl was working? When the clock remained at full speed I think all the framework is crashed
Gringo Vermelho
yoko: I think OpenCL was working just fine, the issue only affects Kepler cards AFAIK which makes it hard to rationalize that there's anything wrong with OpenCL specifically. .... The consequence of doing the patch is that OpenCL functions will be executed on the CPU instead. So, higher CPU load. But if your CPU power management is working then that shouldn't be a problem. I booted OS X to do the patch but I'd probably mess it up because I'm tired from working all day and I'd rather watch a movie or play a game. So I ask those of you who did this, please, what's your CPU load like when doing the same things that caused the GPU clocks to get stuck?
