(surfacewin)

I am trying to recover the product key for my surface pro.  I purchased it used and it had Win Server 2012 installed on it.  The recovery partition was still there.  So, I downloaded windows 8.1 from microsoft as a trial and burned a USB key.  I copied the install.wim from the recovery partition to the sources directory and reinstalled (reset) using the USB key.  Since, I didn't have the original product key, I tried to call microsoft to get the product key.  They provided one, but when I tried to activate, I get the message that it's for the wrong version of windows 8.  Since, I used what was in the recovery partition, the only thing that I can think of is that the USB key that I used may be tagging a version that I downloaded from microsoft.  So, my question is, what is the exact version/type of windows 8 was installed on the original surface and can I find the version (legally) online?  Does anyone have just the files on the USB key excluding the sources directory?

Thanks.

Microsoft Power Cover doubles the Surface's battery life for $200 on March 19th

surfacepowersm.jpg

With the right accessories, the Surface Pro makes a mean alternative to your average laptop -- but even with the second generation model's improved battery life, it doesn't last long outside of the house. Soon, that might be less of an issue: Microsoft is preparing to ship out the tablet's Power Cover keyboard later this month. The $200 Type Cover variant was originally announced with the Surface 2, but didn't make it to market with the new tablets. Now the company has given it a March 19th ship date, promising buyers 70% more battery life for Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 and RT-basedSurface 2 slates. Pricey? A bit, but can you think of a better way to nurse your Windows 8 slate on an international flight?

                    i don't have any disconnect problems the adaptor runs fine, maybe yours is faulty.

                    i do have the same problem of having to reboot every time i insert or take out the adaptor, a real pain when you want to use

                    another device.

                    and as far as i know I'm using the latest driver, that i could find.

                    I have tried a different adaptor with Ralink 5370 chipset, i can pull it out without problems but it freezes the system

                when i plug it back in, so not much better.

My wifi is sorted, i can now remove and insert the adaptor with no system freeze problems,

i have an adaptor with the Ralink 5370 chip but still had problems with the standard drivers.

Then i found this link and problems solved http://www.tonymacx86.com/network/114206-ralink-rt2870-wifi-chipset-10-9-mavericks-solved.html

This is a huge step forward for me.

Can someone please explain to me where I put the Dart exception?

I'm assuming it's somewhere in this picture, but I'm not sure where or what it should look like.

Line #57, Right after darkwake=0.. EG    (  Darkwake=0 Dart=0</string> )

Yeah, i'm having the same problems, I have an Edimax ew7811un and ew7811utc.  Both crash when removed, neither will allow my pro to sleep. anyone know of any fixes to either of these?

@tyroi

it's important that the windows 8.1 version is the pro one, other versions will not accept the surfacepro's serial

@macspike

it seems nice, but that pricetag! gosh! btw the surface pro is already heavy, i don't wanna even imagine how heavier will it be with the powercover.

:/

I had the same adaptor, same problems as you, until i changed to a new Ralink adaptor, see post 1159, problems gone disconnects and automatically reconnects when inserted.

Its just a cheap adaptor from ebay, made a huge difference for me. I now have an almost perfect working setup.

My only problems are minor, side volume button not working, think its the touch drivers, and the brightness slider not working after boot, but ok after sleep.

@ philmoure,

right on!  this driver/utility package works great with my old linksys wusb600n v1.  i can connect and disconnect the device without any problems.  the only problem i had at first was that the utility would not open.  i made sure the old utility installation was removed and deleted the interface entry in the network pref pane.  then i installed the bear utility and added the new wireless adapter interface.  presto!  now i just need to find a smaller adapter with good range.

this is a great find and contribution, thanks!

Great glad it worked for you, I'm  only using a cheap adaptor from ebay, i also find the surface would not sleep correctly before, but seems fine with this bear driver.

All working nice now

@macspike

The power cover looks promising, but, no backlight and the weight. It's no go for me. :-)

@JahStories

The surface pro windows license key is for windows 8, so it won't work on windows 8.1 (even it is pro) . You need to use a common pro license key to install then update the key to the surface pro key after installation or you need to install windows 8 and upgrade to windows 8.1.

BTW, to reply my earlier problem of TextEdit issue. The Touch base driver is actually the cause, the problem is gone after I removed the aiDaemon launch service. There are still some other bugs in the touch base driver (volume button issue, etc..). I noticed that there is a new version of driver (proximity) on touch base site (Marth 10th) I will give that a try to see how it goes before I decide to buy a retail one or not.

@JahStories,

I am a MSDN subscriber and got Windows 8.1 pro ISO off MSDN. For me the windows 8 key (surface pro key) never worked while installing windows 8.1 pro.

If the key is from surface pro 2, it should work. :-). anyway, please pardon my off topic discussion.

I've tried the new touch base driver with proximity support. It works much better than the non-proximity version for me. And they seemed also fixed a pressure sensitivity problem in driver as well.

But the bugs I encountered are still there. Cannot double click to open text file in TextEdit, non working volume buttons, etc.

Just FYI.

Thanks all.  I reinstalled windows 8 using the same usb key again and I no longer get the activate option under pc settings.  Strange, I didn't even need to key in a product key.  Hopefully, when I update to 8.1, it remains activated.   When I ran the reset, it would not let me reset the device without recreating all partitions.  I had trim the windows partition to install OSX.   It wiped out the OSX partition.  I'm going to test it a few more times to see if it's just something I did.

(surfacepro2 OSX)

I was able to install, and was able to type in all the extensions, and turn off the Surface. When I started up I held down and got back into the Clover menu. I hit spacebar and tried to boot without caches and with injected kext on my "OSX Install" partition. It started the process and hung at the following screen. What did I do wrong?

I remember I had to remove one of the plugins from from the fakesmc kext because it kept hanging at that spot too. Go into your usb stick and find the fakesmc.kext. Right click and show package contents and open the plugins folder. Like I said, I don't recall what plugin it was but I think you can safely remove them all, they are used for hardware sensor monitoring. Don't throw them away, save them in a folder. Copy that kext again like you did before. Try to boot again. Safe mode also worked for me sometimes. Once you are up and running you can add in the plugins one at a time.

You sure you installed v10.9.2 with the kexts+mach_kernel for 10.9.2 (by macspike)? because if you install 10.9.1 then some kext as well as the mach_kernel are different... Also, remember that there is a new Surface 2 Pro, with the Intel 4300U CPU that needs the extra "dart=0" boot argument in clover config.plist; maybe you're on this one?
