Trying to install OSX on a Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook "still waiting for root device" error

I am trying to install Mountain Lion 10.8.2

 

[EDIT]: I am now getting the "still waiting for root device" error.I've tried using plenty of combinations of different boot flags. I am only able to use usb 3.0 because this laptop only has those kind of ports.if anyone has any suggestions that can help me out, please let me know

 

[OUTDATED] (I'VE GOTTEN PASSED THIS ERROR)

[My bios version is A13 and i have windows 8 installed. After i make a make a bootable usb drive (Sandisk cruzer 8gb) with the install file which is an iso file.

the problem i get is when I go into the bios setting and enable legacy rom loading and disable the UEFI boot and try to boot from the usb, i get a black screen saying this device is covered by a patent and then it lists my ethernet device (Realtek ...) and it seems like it is trying to boot from the network instead of the usb. I have also downloaded iATKOS L2 and tried the same thing, but i get the same problem. I managed to install the snow leopard on a virtual machine using virtual box, but i want the actual OS on my computer. Being able to install it on virtual box proves that theres nothing wrong with the install files. I have windows 8 loaded on a usb drive and it loads that one fine.

Does anyone have any sugguestions i can try?]

 

My Computer specs are:

Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook

Windows 8 Pro 64-bit Booting in UEFI

Linux CrunchBang booting from HDD

4GB Ram

Intel Core i5 3317U

Hitachi 500GB HDD

32GB SSD

Bios A13

Intel HD4000(no discrete graphics)

2 USB 3.0 (No 2.0)

No Disk Drive

 

External HDD: WD MyPassPort 500GB Already in GUID Partitioning scheme for mac.

 

also, can anyone give me advice on which guide i should follow for my specs?

My ultimate goal is to have mac OSX dual booting with Windows 8 Pro. I'm more of a windows person but i am a dj so i want to to have the stability that OSX provides while djing.

I already have windows 8 pro on a usb drive. It is a 100% legal copy that was given to me because i am a computer science student.

 

Thank you, any sugguestion and help is greatly appreciated.

 

Note: I do not have a disk drive because it is an ultrabook so some guides were not applicable to me. USB boots are my only option

Check the boot order in the bios.

 

Press F12 when you turn on the machine, and select the right device.

i have already tried changing the boot order and ive tried temporarily booting from the usb but no luck, i get the same screen.

i have included some images. I created the bootable usb with transmac.

maybe a better question is...

 

How can i install mac without a disk drive?

i only have 2 usb 3.0 ports, no 2.0 ports

im able to get virtual box running a guest mac os x but im unable to install the guest additions that allow shared folders and it doesnt mount the usb for some reason so im unable to create the bootable usb through a mac os

I have tried trans mac but when i try booting off the usb, it gives me the same black screen with the same message.

when i made a bootable for windows 8(im planning on dual booting so this would help me fix the windows boot loader once the mac install messes it up), windows picked it up and ran the install immediately, but i didnt finish it since i dont have to right now.

 

can someone help me out?anyone?

Ok, just giving a quick update.

I installed the mac OS x bas system and a retail copy of ML 10.8.2 and followed one of the guides on here, but I got the Apple loaded screen with the small stop/prohibited logo. So i booted with -v and it I'm getting the "still waiting for root device" error.I have my SATA set to AHCI already. I don't know what to do.

a step by step would be nce, if you dont mind

also, this notebook only has usb 3 ports so that may be a problem. and the notebook is similar to a macbook air setup with the ivy i5 @1.7 GHz up to 2.6 with Turbo boost.both notebooks have no cd drives but most likely have the same chipset,i put that smbios.plist in my install usb

extract your dsdt and install lspci for osx to get ids

 

also i tried to get dsdt from bios but i dont see any A16 for any xps 14.

your model isnt fully described.

the bios version is A13, i flashed to the newest available one when i got it.

the exact model is XPS14-8182SLV

i have extracted my dsdt and i ran the lspci installer.was i suppose to run it on my usb drive or on the mac hdd?

oh yeah, i don't recall if i mentioned it above but I'm trying to install mountain lion 10.8.2.

now open terminal and type lspci -vn

try linux in usb or cd.

yes i was using a vmware image of lion.

i was going to download a live cd for linux but ill just install one of the distros. i just bought a 500GB HDD so ill be installing mac and linux to that if possible

which i think is included so your issue is likely something else.

 

ive tried booting with combinations of different boot flags like

-v, -f, GraphicsEnabler=Yes/No, PciRoot=1, npci=0x3000, -x

 

still no luck

i then applied this patch, but the problem persists

hello

 

if u use a usb install.. remove from the usb all appleintelhd*.kext

 

reboot again with

 

-f -v GraphicsEnabler=No

 

if u install, must read about enabling u intelhd4000

Hello, and thank you for your response.

I tried what you suggested and im still receiving the same error.

one thing i did notice though, was that after it loaded all the files, it initialixed the nullcpupower kext, but i didnt see any line where it initialized the fakesmc kext. on other attempts, ive seen it load that kext but now it isnt and it is in S/L/E folder

try to use another version of fakesmc if don't load fakesmc never work, fakesmc is mandatory to run mac os x in a hack

 

if not work u must inject by device properties efi string the platform id for hd4000, in org.chameleon.boot

 

-f always to not read the caches

I've tried 3 different FakeSMC kexts and neither of them seem to load when i read the script when running in -v -f GraphicsEnabler=No. I added IntelCPUMonitor kext and that one loads fine.i don't know why its not initialising fakesmc
