The T420S system fan is blowing rather frequently and quite audible compared with the T420. Is this a usual thing? T420S is a 4174-2AG type. Except for that maybe the better choice over a T420? goodguess Posted January 13, 2020 Share Posted January 13, 2020 (edited) Status report: I was lamenting that my JMicron SD card reader stopped working with Catalina. Tried again with the T420S and can confirm the SD card reader is still working. Mounted the system partition read/write and did run JMicron PCIe Card Reader.mpkg. The installer told me that it was not made for this macOS, but proceeded anyway. Success so far! Too bad the JMicron based PCI card readers are that hard to find these days. As for the USB3 port of the T420S, its working with Rehabman 2015 Generic kext mostly. Sometimes a second trial is needed to have the device show up on the desktop. Last not least, I found the patched config.plist, tluck recommended, working with all T420(s) displays, no matter whether they are LG, AUO or Samsung brands. suzunski Posted January 19, 2020 Share Posted January 19, 2020 Hello, I followed the manual and successfully installed Mojave on my Lenovo ThinkPad T420 (i5, 8 Gb RAM, HD 3000, SSD Samsung 860 EVO 256 GB). I followed the steps as described and the installation went smoothly and everything works, but I have one problem. The most common problem is opening and minimizing Safari and other heavier programs. For example, when I open Safari and try to minimize it as long as it causes the entire operating system to freeze and I have to shut down the laptop forcibly. Please give me advice on what to do because I really like working with Mojave but I do not like this freeze and the constant restart. What do you get when opening "About this Mac" from the Apple menu? Did you check whether the HD3000 kexts are loaded? With 8GB RAM you should see your HD3000 with 512MB RAM as above. Before starting OS, I went into clover options and set it to run with config.EDID-2e2.plist and I no longer have any clogs and freezes even with all the dock effects Now I have the following question, do I need to do something special to automatically load this config.EDID-2e2.plist so I don't manually ask it, or if it is already asked once it will start automatically? And one more question, come to me Security Update 2019-002, 10.14.6 - 1,36 GB which I had previously installed but then starting up the laptop and staying on the black screen, ignore it or look for a solution to this problem as well? If you want to change the config.plist permanently, mount the EFI partition of your Samsung SSD and go to the Clover folder. I would recommend renaming the config.plist to config.old, make a duplicate of the 2e2.plist and rename that duplicate config.plist. That way you can keep all original files, just in case. I do not recall any issue with the security update. A black screen usually says there is something wrong with the GPU kexts. I found out where my errors were when installing and configuring Mojave and I really want to try it install Catalina, do you have experience with it and any impressions on whether it's worth a try or stay on Mojave? Sierra is the last OS fully supporting Adobe CS 5.5 (with Java runtime), Mojave the last to run 32bit apps. So newer is just newer, not per se better. Sound is not overwhelming with the T420 built in speakers, no matter which OS you are using. 10.15 is working flawlessly when you are using the Clover package tluck has on GitHub and the CloverPatcher from the Dosdude1 site. When you plan to use Catalina with another than a LG 1600x900 display, best use the attached dual link config.plist at EFI/EFI/Clover. Dual Link also works with the LG 1600x900 display, its just not obligatory. After preparing the CatalinaPatcher boot stick, install the OS as usual.
