tluck Posted January 22, 2016 Share Posted January 22, 2016 well i usually don't look it at all that much. it is running at 3212 rpm right now and very low CPU temp are 111 F ... so now since I was distracted for about 5 minutes while writing this post, (and perhaps) since I took it out the dock and don't have any drives attached now it slowed down to 1979 RPM . maybe gets better cooling on my lap than the dock? then waiting another few minutes its backup to 3230 doing email started up skype etc. so if 3200 is too fast (and replacing the paste does help the low speed, then perhaps instead having the ThinkVantage button toggle the FAN mode to Max speed, you change the the value have it run in low mode vs auto. I've found my thermal paste (after messing up my apartment ), applied the new paste and my temps are lower by approx. 3 C average, but fan still does not want to go down to 2000 RPM. Here is my conclusion: 1. My BIOS is a modded 1.46 with whitelist disabled. Maybe I need to find another one. 2. Something's still wrong with my OS X install. I can confirm this by installing Ubuntu or Windows on my optibay harddrive without breaking my OS X install. How do I install another OS on my HDD and retain the ability to boot into OS X? 3. My heatsink's FRU is 04W0409 which only has 1 heatpipe but there is another version with dual heatpipes, the 04W0409. I might buy one from eBay to see if this performs better. About the ThinkVantage button... How do I change it's mapping to force the fan to lower RPMs? I installed Macs Fan Control app but that does not change the fan speed at all. Thanks a lot. ps. This doesnt seem to be a new issue - on windows i used to run tpfancontrol because the fan was always wonky. i dont know what the actual built-in fanspeed / temperature curve really is - but it seems curved the wrong way! too fast for low CPU temps and not fast enough for high CPU. to change the ThinkVantage Button - there is some easy edits in the DSDT to adjust the fan speed. search for _Q19. the logic is to change to speed 0x7 - which is max speed. hit button again and resets to 0x80 - auto. so you can try speeds 0x1,x02... 0x7 to see what speed you like. (0x1 is probably the right one to keep fan at low speed.) but yes my system runs at 3200 most of the time but it doesnt really seem too loud etc. i did some video transcoding yesterday - CPUS were maxxed for about 20 minutes - temps maxed out around 185-190F (and the fan was around 3500) i upped the fan to max ( ~4480 RPM) and it cooled it down a little but it gets a bit noisy. Qeeet Posted January 25, 2016 Share Posted January 25, 2016 @qeeet (and others with reboot when shutdown issue)... so the system will shutdown properly when there are no external USB items (wifi or BT)... just trying to see what is different as it seems only a few have this issue. it seems like your issues may be coming from the USB-WiFi? I don't use one with my T420 but I use a USB-WiFi (RTL8192) on a different system and had to create sleep watcher script to turn it off before sleep and then re-enable after sleep. I've found the cause of this. And I can temporary fix the problem. I have wireless mouse with usb dongle, also I have installed "USB Overdrive" application, which allows to rebind any mouse's button. My guess is that that application does something with driver: when I turn off T420 with mouse's usb plug in, than I took off mouse's usb plug, and start T420. Mac OS X cannot launch: kernel panic in some IO kext. My temp fix is just to take off mouse's USB plug. Not big deal at all. But anyway, want this to work ok.. Maybe we could make some update into this and all of users who have working wifi could put some info about it? Then we could gather all of this info and create even an 'table' with description so everyone new could chose the best for his needs and budget? tluck Posted February 4, 2016 Share Posted February 4, 2016 this is my understanding. there are 2 modes of AirDrop - the older/original Legacy Airdrop - based on Bonjour and PAN. new mode AirDrop (same name but different protocols) is based on BT/LE and p2p WiFi - so new macs and now iPhones (iOS7+) can participate. Since the standard T420 BT does not support LE, it reverts to Legacy Airdrop only mode which excludes iPhones. AirDrop in this mode connects to old macs (or new macs if toggle into legacy) - trifero posted the picture of how to enable that mode on a new mac iPhones don't support this Legacy mode. my 2010 MacBook Pro works just like my T420 (connects via Legacy AirDrop). my wife's 2015 macbookAir supports Handoff and thus new mode AirDrop to answer your question: i think you would just a newer BT to get LE for Handoff support etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Or should I aim for a combined WLAN+BT card? I have an empty slot under the memory cover but that one seems to be a WWAN slot for 3G modems. Thanks.
