Jump start uses ApplePartitionInfo proto to determine information to do jump, so thats why it doesn't work properly "OOB" due to Clover doesn't have such proto.

Happy to trade EdkPartition IDB + reverse for ApfsJumpstart IDB (+ reverse) :P

Not all Nehalem CPUs use QPI so it must be specific ones, also I discovered that some other newer CPUs that support multi-package configuration also use QPI in addition to DMI.

Here's a list of all CPUs that support QPI (not necessarily used though because after Westmere, some cores still used QPI but did not expose the interface):

 

From Nehalem: Beckton, Gainestown, Bloomfield, and Jasper Forest that start with LC5 or EC5. 

From Westmere: Westmere-EX, Westmere-EP, and Gulftown.

 

Should be noted that after Westmere microarchitecture, that all intel CPUs use DMI and only use QPI to communicate between CPU packages in multi-package configurations:

 

From SB: Sandy Bridge-EN and Sandy Bridge-EP.

From IB: Ivy Bridge-EX, some Ivy Bridge-EP, and some Ivy Bridge-EN.

From Haswell: Haswell E7-* and Haswell E5-*

From Broadwell: Broadwell-EX.

Hi guys,

 

A few questions from my side. I'm trying to debug a certain issue I've got with one of the Recovery disks, after reinstalling High Sierra from it... I think it might have created an extra Recovery partition or something.

 

 

They are all related to FileVault 2. By the way, really nice job with the FileVault implementation. I never thought I would see the day when this would work.

 

 

Anyway, so here are the questions:

1. When you're using FileVault, is it normal that the Clover UI says "Boot macOS from Recovery HD"? I mean...why Recovery? I didn't name my boot drive "Recovery". I have a separate partition for that. It's confusing. Am I really booting from Recovery in this case? :) It's even funnier when it says "Boot Recovery from Recovery".

 

The problem comes when you have multiple installations, and you don't know which one is the one you want to boot into, since all of them are named "Recovery".

 

Also, the issue I'm having right now, is that I might have two "Recovery" partitions instead of one, for the same installation... Meaning one boot drive for High Sierra, and two recovery partitions, only one of which seems to be real. If you look at the screenshot below, you will see I have 7 partitions on 2 different physical drives. If I remember correctly, there were only 6 (one Boot and one Recovery for each) before reinstalling High Sierra.

 

So this is a screenshot of one of the partitions (HFS+ partition with FileVault). And it should say SierraSSD for that particular case. Since that's the name of the boot drive.

 

From left to right, I should have:

 

HiSierraHDD - HDD HFS+ boot partition of High Sierra (10.13, now on DP2) ,initially encrypted on DP1, reinstalled from Recovery after a failed update of DP2 (couldn't boot into it, I got the Forbidden icon on boot). Now it's unencrypted, so no FileVault anymore. Also, I should (I think) have only one Recovery partition. However, I seem to have two...or something... Hard to tell when all of them are named Recovery. It looks like one is the old volume for encrypted booting (usually named Recovery, for some reason), while the other one is the real Recovery...? This is so confusing.

 

And this is what it looks like in Clover GUI.

2. I'm not sure there is anything that can be done about this one, but I'm gonna ask anyway. When using FileVault, the first stage boot is a transparent background, the Apple logo is replaced by a generic "user icon" and you get the loading bar underneath. Everything ok so far.

 

For the second stage boot, on real macs, you get the same thing. But I only get the loading bar, on a black screen. Now, of course, there are many differences here. And it's not a big deal anyway. But I was just wondering why does this happen and if it can be fixed somehow. Again, I'm not sure there is anything that Clover can help with here, so I apologize for the off-topic, if that's the case. But I'll never know if if I don't ask. :)

 

3. I know Clover is not (or at least I think it's not) supposed to look the same as Apple's bootloader. However, I was wondering if there was a way to hide the Recovery partitions, if you don't need them, for a cleaner look. And maybe, be able to access them with a shortcut or something, in Clover GUI, when you do need them. On real Macs, those partitions are most likely hidden, and to be honest, I have no idea if you can make them visible or not. You probably can, but I never messed with that. Anyway, that's beside the point. I was just wondering if there is any way to hide them with Clover, as well, while still being able to easily access them when needed.

 

Anyway, that's about it from me for today. Damn, that's gonna be a long post.

Looks perfectly fine to me. The two recovery HD are to recover the installs, the third inside the APFS is to fix the APFS container. The reason you need to boot from recovery HD when you use filevault is that the other partition is encrypted and can't be booted from without decryption, which starts from the recovery because it's not encrypted. I'm not sure about the look when you boot. On my mac (before it was just stolen) there was a black screen with a bar, then login, then looked like normal boot, so not sure, haven't got filevault on my desktop. As for the hiding partitions or renaming them, read the wiki and look for GUI/Custom/Entries. You can even rename them so you can more easily determine which boots what.

For the boot stages, this only occurs when FileVault is enabled. When it's not, I get a regular black screen with the Apple logo and loading bar underneath, for both stages. However, when it's enabled, I get the transparent background and the generic user icon only for the first stage. On the second stage, I only have the loading bar on a black background. As I said, not a big issue. Not sure Clover can help in any way with this...But I thought I'd ask, just in case. :)

 

As for the customization, I will definitely check it out. Thank you. :) I'm wondering though...why is this not done automatically? Meaning, the naming of the drives. In order to make it less confusing when you have more than one boot partition. How do real Macs read the name of that partition if it's encrypted?

Showing a drive with the label of a different drive is a bless concept... Clover does not support bless. ;)

There is a topic devoted to just filevault troubleshooting. As for your double entry for the first OS, if you encrypted the volume, then decrypted, the boot.efi for booting the encrypted volume was never removed from the recovery HD. So now you have the unencrypted one from the volume, and the one that is supposed to boot the encrypted. This is because of bless, as DF pointed out. Since macOS would just re-bless back to the recovery but clover doesn't look at this and only for the existance of the boot files.

The label is located in the file /System/Library/CoreServices/.disk_label.contentDetails on the Recovery HD. Granted that /System/Library/CoreServices is the blessed directory by default. But I'm sure there is also /System/Library/CoreServices/com.apple.Boot.plist that gives the UUID of the linked volume.

 

EDIT: It is the blessed directory by default when filevault is enabled. Otherwise it is /com.apple.recovery.boot.

I see... So, technically, real Macs should also show FileVault OS encrypted partitions as "Recovery"-labeled partitions? It's just that Macs bootloader can link the OS label (for example "SierraSSD") to the "Recovery" partition and show it in an intuitive way, whereas Clover can't? Because of...Bless? Did I get this right? This is a lot of new information for me. So, I apologize for the stupid questions. As for the Custom Entries...I'll have to read more into it. Right now it's really confusing. :))

No, Macs show the volume name and no recovery HD when filevault is enabled. You must press CMD+R during startup to boot into recovery. I told you edit your config.plist and add GUI/Custom/Entries.

 

EDIT: Unsure who edited the wiki and completely broke all the anchor tags.... It's annoying though.

Yep, so HiSierraHDD was encrypted in DP1. And, at this stage, I only had 6 boot entries. Each OS with its corresponding Recovery partition.

 

Then I tried to update to DP2, and I got that Forbidden icon on boot. So I booted into Recovery, unlocked and formatted HiSierraHDD and reinstalled the OS. Apparently this also installed DP2. So I didn't have to update again.

 

However, at this stage, I also got a new boot entry for the (now unencrypted) drive and I still have the one which was previously pointing to the encrypted one.

 

So...how do I fix this? Preferably without screwing everything up. :))

The label is located in the file /System/Library/CoreServices/.disk_label.contentDetails on the Recovery HD. Granted that /System/Library/CoreServices is the blessed directory by default. But I'm sure there is also /System/Library/CoreServices/com.apple.Boot.plist that gives the UUID of the linked volume.

contentDetails is only used for construction afaik, BootPicker displays the image. But yes. that's the magic. :)

No, Macs show the volume name and no recovery HD when filevault is enabled. You must press CMD+R during startup to boot into recovery. I told you edit your config.plist and add GUI/Custom/Entries.

I never tried GUI/Custom/Entries.... and by the looks of it, I might need some time to understand how to use it. But I'll definitely give it a try.

 

Well, I have to admit, being able to clearly determine what the hell you're booting into, would be a real bless. :D

 

EDIT: Unsure who edited the wiki and completely broke all the anchor tags.... It's annoying though.

Hit the space bar on the one entry you want to remove and see what the path is and then go to that drive and remove the file. Or hide it with custom entries.

They are basically filters, so any anything that matches the keys you add to a custom entry will give a boot entry that has all the additional properties, like name, arguments, etc.

Yeah. But better magic would be getting the correct bless information yet who is not lazy and going to do that?

For retrieving the file: The logic to detect all those hard-coded paths is without a doubt larger than a bless logic would be.

Regarding the label: Guess showing 'all bootable paths' is the Clover way, a Mac-way is quite limited tbh (e.g. no Recovery entry with HFS FV2).

Yes, but that method is needed to support booting any other OS. However using the bless directory information would help with the constantly changing boot.efi paths, especially for installers. Also the information for the recovery to boot is still in the (secondary) bless directory information when filevault is enabled, which is how you can still boot to it with CMD+R. So you could read the bless information and get both the filevault decrypt start for the OS volume, and the recovery.
