iMoshi
Well, I did it! I stumbled across this kext last night: http://www.kexts.com/view/339-fix_still_wa...device_....html Installed that as a long shot, and BOOM. 10.6.3 loads just fine. Only problem is I have to use arch=i386 or it will freeze one it hits the desktop. To automatically enter boot flags, you modify the boot.plist and add <key>Boot Flags</key><string>arch=i386</string> right? I tried that but it doesn't seem to take. Am I doing something wrong? Anyway - thanks to this thread (and many others) I now have a beautifully running XPS 410 dual booting with Windows 7 and Snow Leopard 10.6.3! If you have any waiting for root device errors that you can't figure out, try that kext! Thanks Moshi and everyone else! Hey there, sorry for the late reply. I'm glad things worked out well now, try this boot file from http://imoshi.com/boot.zip and replace it with the one from your EFI partition. It should let you boot in 64bit. Make sure you back up the the current one also. Ok guys, now I've downloaded "Archive.zip" and "SL Drivers 410 2.zip". Now what? I'm under windows. How can I make an USB Stick with everything to boot SL Retail DVD? Umm, there are many tutorials all over this forum. First, you'll need to find a friend who has either a real Mac or another Hackintosh (so you can make your USB Thumb bootable). Get that done, and come back
scottyd33
Your boot file produced the same result as before - slow loadup into Snow, then frozen once at the desktop
iMoshi
Your boot file produced the same result as before - slow loadup into Snow, then frozen once at the desktop Hmm, that's weird. Well I guess there is not that much difference between 64 bit and 32 bit. I honestly never experienced advantage of 64bit eventhough I work with Photoshop etc... Try "arch=x86_64" in the < /string> field for com.boot.Apple.plist and ./update.sh
scottyd33
Same thing - slow boot and frozen desktop. Oh well.. I don't mind having to type in arch=i386 every time. Small price to pay for a well working Mac OSX.

Well, good stuff pretty much everything is done for you Hi, ok, now I'm running osx 10,5. How can I use the files inside archive.zip to make the USB thumb bootable? Thanks again! Did you even open that .zip file to wonder what is in there? That's a Vanilla folder, and you'll need that for later use. Dude, Google for a beginner tutorial or something... scottyd33
Maybe because I was using boot flag instead of kernel flag in the boot.plist?

If you have any waiting for root device errors that you can't figure out, try that kext! Thanks Moshi and everyone else! <key>Kernel Flags</key> [not boot flags] Alright fellas. Lets post findings/fixes/etc on this thread when they're discovered. To clarify a few things: - The whole 64/32 debacle. "IF" you're able to get 64 to work, cool, but you're not going to notice any difference in performance or anything unless you're running 8gb of memory or higher. Stick with 32. Your apps run in 64 anyhow.... - Boot flags refer to the options defined in the com.apple.Boot.plist. You can do anything from running a diffferent boot theme on start-up, setting flags such as -f, -v, arch=i386, etc. Hope everyone has clean installs now, but make sure to post findings, ask questions, etc.........so we don't have a bunch of "roque" info floating on this thread. By rogue, i mean misleading or even possibly wrong info...... For any new folks looking to get Snow Leopard installed.........this thread is for you. Post info in regards to what you have, where you're at on the install and we'll get you fixed up. Remember, we were all newbies at some point and just b/c we have a working install, doesn't mean you're not a newbie.....haha......the best thing to do is help each other out, share info, and only share info if you KNOW 100% its legit. Cheers fellas.

If i restored to a hard drive i get still waiting for root device, even using the waiting for root device fix on the previous page, if boot from usb it wont recognize my hard drives, any suguestion? i know that i can install 10.6 o 10.6.2 then upgrade, but i would like to install 10.6.3 retail
Rob G
On the drive you restore the 10.6.3 disk to you need to find the hidden system folder for the installer. Then copy the waiting for root divice kext to the extensions folder in the installers hidden system folder. Then try booting to the installer with -f -v. Make sure your raid is on and the hdd ur installing to is sata port 1 I tried disk utility to restore the boot loader disk image to a USB flash drive but the utility is giving me an error. First it tells me to scan the image which I did, but then when I try scanning it it says it's an invalid image. Is there anyone else that has this problem?
