Weird hang during boot

Recently I have re-installed my system and I had the same problem. I have tried 1 10.4.7 (JaS) and 3 different 10.4.6, all had "IOKitWaitQuiet ( ) timed out" error and caused 35 seconds delay. Finally I used 10.4.5 (it's actually a 10.4.4 with 10.4.5 update patch) and no more same problem. Updated to 10.4.7 step by step, booting remained normal without delay.

Hi,

I have the same delay/problem when booting. It takes about 30 secs extra and I don't know why. These are the debug lines:

... kernel[0]: CODE SIGNING: cs_invalid_page: p=90[mdworker] clearing CS_VALID

... kextd[10]: IOKitWaitQuiet() timed out waiting to write kernel symbols

... kextd[10]: writing kernel link data to /var/run/mach.sym

Could someone explain what is "kernel symbols" or "kernel link data"?, what is this "mach.sym" used for?

Thanks...

I solved this issue with Leopard on my Girlfriends Thinkpad T41 by installing the PCMCIA drivers by Chun-Nan. Maybe you've undetected HW that is probed and times out. After installation of the patched IOPCIFamily and IOPCCardFamily all timeouts are gone:

I have had this problem again since I updated to 10.4.11. After compared the Extensions in 10.4.11 and 10.4.10, I found I didn't have IOPCCardFamily.kext in 10.4.10. After deleted it, now my 10.4.11 boots within 20sec on my old IBM T40. What a simple solution...

Hi, I'm trying to install with Kalyway on my T40 but the whole boot halts on a similar timeout. I can see that IOPCCardFamily.kext is available in the Extensions folder but I cannot delete it to try anything, is says that it is read-only. I run this with the terminal from the DVD.

Btw after a long while the screen goes black, does that indicate anything?

I'll appreciate any hints.
