Riley Freeman
What's the version number on the nvidia kexts in 10.8? Wondering how/if they work in Lion. Rrrrrrrrrrr
Will this version have out of the box support for some AMD processors? Since Apple once said they wanted to use AMD cpus for their products at some time. cili0
in a certain sense I hope mountain lion will be the lion sp1, in the same sense snow leopard was the leopard sp1 (and IMHO Snow Leopard is the best OSX so far). fantomas
Certainly, for an output per year, we can't speak about an OS, but more than a SP ! But Apple is not Microsoft. In any case no, it is a new operating system. cili0
in my opion apple had to diverge the attention from Windows 8 + Metro to OSX + iOS tweaks. On the other hand the time interval between two following releases of OSX has always been between 200/300 days on average (Leopard and Snow Leopard are exceptions). Alessandro17
The first OS X, Cheetah 10.0 was released On March 24, 2001. Lion was released on July 20, 2011. Thus we have 8 releases in 10 years, an average of just over a year per release. Mountain Lion is scheduled to be released in late summer 2012, one year after Lion. Thus yes, the time span is a bit shorter than average, but not that much. Personal opinion. I find the OS X release schedule about right. Operating systems should be released once a year. Many Linux distributions are released twice a year. Of course with Microsoft it is an entirely different story. 1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/275939-mac-os-x-108-mountain-lion-announced/#findComment-1798913 Share on other sites
fantomas
Many Linux distributions are released twice a year. That's true ! Linux releases come out every 6 months (Ubuntu), I think that under these conditions, it isn't easy to come up with something new and stable! I think two years is more than enough to release a new and stable OS, and that wouldn't be too lag behind in relation with the new technologies! but I think we're a little off topic, right? What was the question ? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/275939-mac-os-x-108-mountain-lion-announced/#findComment-1798945 Share on other sites
Alessandro17
I wasn't that off-topic, I mainly explained how things work with the OS X release schedule and why Mountain Lion is not that different in comparison to previous releases 1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/275939-mac-os-x-108-mountain-lion-announced/#findComment-1798951 Share on other sites

Alessandro17
IMHO Snow Leopard is the best OSX so far. I respect your opinion of course, but my MB Pro came with SL installed. It would use an awful lot of resources and the CPU would always run very hot. When I upgraded to Lion I had an entirely different computer, an amazing difference in resources demand and performance. Also, with Lion we have finally seen some long awaited features. zSprawl
So I've been running this OS most of the day, and so far, I'm mixed on my like for it. It seems like so little has changed, and what has changed, I have on my iPad/iPhone. We now get unified messaging (no more iChat), and a lot of iCloud-type features, like shared notes, reminders, and messages. If you subscribe to the iOS eco-system, this seems to work well (just like it did in SL). The new default wallpaper looks a lot like the one we got previously (the space galaxy shot). We do get a new version of Mail, that so far looks like the old version, except the animations are all broken so stuff happens lightning fast (which I like, haha). Mail also seems to index every single freaking mailbox you have, which took forever to setup, but after it was done, it was kinda nice cause it groups conversations regardless of what folder they are in (including your sent messages). Parallels Desktop is broken badly. Even the 32-bit hack that people are posting doesn't seem to work for me. Then again, all desktop visualization breaks every single time they update the OS, and this is a preview. The updates come through the App Store. Safari seems very much the same. Messages and the iPad/iPhone Apps function much like you'd expect them, and updates happen pretty quickly to my iPad and iPhone. It was pretty interesting to see that my iPad games from Game Center weren't visible on my Macbook or iMac though. I guess they are different apps... I guess. More as I keep using it! 1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/275939-mac-os-x-108-mountain-lion-announced/#findComment-1798996 Share on other sites
