Aqua
Considering the new iMac 24in uses nVidia's GeForce 7300GT for video, does that mean I could buy a 7300GT for my PC running Mac and have it support QE/CI and everything else graphical? NoDigital
I think the question was more the case of whether a regular non-Apple 7300GT will work. I have a few questions too, amuse me. Q1 If I go to the apple store and buy a 100GBP 7300GT card and plug it in my Hackintosh, will it work with the regular JAS 10.4.7 and the bundled NVidia drivers, ala Mac Pro???? Q2 If it does work, can I go and buy a 55GBP 7300GT card from another manufacturer and will it still work? Q3 If the answer to Q2 is no, what's the difference between the Apple card and A.N.Others card? Is it the card firmware? If so, can you flash A.N.Others card with the firmware to make a Non-Apple 7300GT card work? Q4 Why doesnt a 7600 or other 7 series card work? I would have thought that the driver would work with *any* 7x00 card. Is the card simply not recognised because the driver is looking for a device id or Nvidia serial or series ID? If so, why can't the Apple driver be patched to work with other 7 series cards? BTW, did anyone else notice the job advert for NVidia that was looking for a OSX driver developer? Maybe a full unified driver set is on its way... Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/27187-7300gt-mac-compatible/#findComment-197570 Share on other sites

Maybe a full unified driver set is on its way... it was my understanding that a Mac 7300 is different than a pc 7300 because the mac one is loaded by EFI or has EFI...something to that affect, so It may not work and it wouldn't be as easy as plugging it in and going... I believe a mac 7300 would even be loaded in a hackintosh enviroment because of lack of EFI... and a PC 7x00 would need to use the macvidia driver to get it working decently...in which case as of right now...no qe/ci/gl. Also flashing the firmware on the card would do nothing seeing as the EFI is a seperate chip that is not found on pc versions... although I could be wrong... salax
You know, i've had the exact same thoughts a few days ago, and haven't gotten a straight answer from anyone yet (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=26026). Having the experience of flashing older PC graphics cards for my PowerMac 7300 in the past, i can tell you that a Mac-firmware card would not play straight up if hooked on a pc. (vice-versa also). If some kind gent/lady would take the time and is willing to unplug his/her 7300 GT or Quadro card from an Intel MacPro and test it on a regular PC, we would have our answer real fast! If that card works elsewhere, then we're missing something stupid! If it doesn't work, then it's a matter of firmware. Hope my idea helps... In a hackintosh, I was under the impression it would require the driver, frameworks and latest kernel to function. gwprod12
yeah... the nVidia driver doesnt work as yet without the 10.4.7 kernel. Hardware isnt important until that's resolved.
