In what has to be one of the unluckiest animal attack-related deaths, Steve Irwin died today when his heart was punctured by a barb from a stingray. There have only been 2 other recorded deaths caused by stingrays in Australia. Although he's survived encounters with tigers, sharks, crocodiles, and almost every beast imaginable, it seems Steve-O couldn't escape eventual bad luck. The entire world is mourning and the Australian Prime Minister has even made public statements today commending him.

I tip my hat to you, Crocodile Hunter. :compress:

Here's some coverage directly from an Australian news broadcast:

I'm in denial, but each Digg story I see brings me closer to the sad reality. :(

Well of all the people you would expect to die from some sort of freak animal attack, he would be pretty high on the list.

Steve: Woah, what a beauty. See the spike there on...

[THWACK]

Steve: Oh bugger! Did you get that Rich?

accent>

We'll always remember you steve!

[bootnote]

I'm running a sweepstake for guesses on how long it takes the footage to hit youtube.

Yeah so am i, ABC isnt a news channel but it has a news program. Well obviously go dwanted him dead, i mean how unlucky can you be to get punctured THROUGH the heart.

Who is he and when did he die?

Have they caught who did it? Maybe there's some CCTV footage. They should be brought to justice and drowned.

Let me know when his funereal is. If it's anywhere near central London then I’ll try and take and make it in my lunch hour.

If this was supposed to be a joke, it wasn't very funny.

;) You took it way too seriously.

Anyway people die all the time. No one goes booohooohooo over them and so I honestly have to say I don't feel much here.

I'm sure he was a cool guy but it just makes me wonder if anyone would even care if all the news channels hadn't decided to paint his picture on our screens for a whole week. The media have made us care. And I don't like that idea that they tell me what I should or should not feel sad about. I would honestly hear about the people dyeing in Africa but don't get much of that.
