Hi everyone

I followed Verdant's guide to install iAtkos S3 V2 on a nForce motherboard (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=284&showentry=816).

I followed it to the letter and it installed properly first time. However whilst I was cloning my drive onto the other partition (before updating to 10.6.4), it crashed with a "You need to restart" screen. It did that once before too while on Safari. Its was totally random from what I could tell. That messed up the partitions and made it panic on bootup so in Windows I wiped the drive and decided to start over.

Started over, same thing happened. Its one of the kexts in there that isnt compatible I think, and being a newbie I really haven't a clue which it is. Seeing as it doesnt give any information when it crashes apart from telling me to press the reset button.

My specs are in my signature.

Regards

If you want help with iATKOS S3 v2 installation, why did you not post asking for help in my Snow leopard nForce topic..... :D

Lol sorry I found out how to fix it basically immediately after posting the thread and I forgot to update.

I had to use a maxmem=2048 boot flag because of the ApplenforceATA.kext. I saw that further down the page where it said that it might not work correctly for computers with more than 3GB of RAM. Great guide by the way.

Glad you like the guide...... :D

The AppleNForceATA.imk64bit.kext should/does work with > 3GB RAM and is needed to boot/run in 64bit mode......but it does not support SATA DVDRWs as far as I am aware........all other AppleNforceATA.kexts are 32bit only in my experience......

So please [1] clarify which AppleNForceATA.kext you are now using in /Extra/Extensions/ and [2] confirm that you are booting in 64bit mode by typing in Terminal:

uname -a

and getting as the output:

xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64

I'm not on that machine right now but the AppleNForceATA.kext I have in there is the regular one, not the slashack or ANV modified ones. Thats the exact file name, applenforceata.kext.

I also selected 32 bit boot following the guide so it shouldnt be booting in 64 bit. Come to think of it that might be my problem right there lol but I will try those commands on the machine tomorrow.

EDIT: By the way I am also having another problem with the install, can you please check out that thread? http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=266877

Thanks for all the help.

Then it is the original MeDevil version which is 32bit only, and is limited to 3GB RAM or less......requiring the use of maxmem=3072 if you have > 3GB RAM installed......

If you have arch=i386 in any com.apple.Boot.plist, you WILL be booting in 32bit mode even with all 64bit kexts......

If you want to boot the iATKOS S3 v2 installed OS X Snow Leopard in 64bit mode then in /Extra/Extensions/ you should have:

AppleNForceATA.imk64bit.kext

EvOreboot.kext

FakeSMC.kext

NullCPUPowerManagement.kext

and have arch=x86_64 instead of arch=i386 in your Boot.plist file.....

Right, OK. Where can I find this new Nforce kext? I cant seem to find it with Google lol I tried renaming and using the AnV 64 Bit one from Snow Support Files 2.3 and changing the Boot.plist but then it hangs on USB unable to enumerate a device. Above that it said AppleNForceATA.kext not found.

See my Snow Leopard install guide post #1 Part K. Item. 6....... :)

I dont understand this, all of a sudden my install just broke. After the last failed attempt I booted into Backup to clone the drive over, did that, fixed permissions, the "You need to restart" screen came up on the main partition. Tried to boot back into Backup and now that isnt giving my USB any power. Right now I'm back in Vanilla and had to boot with maxmem=2048 cpus=1 busratio=24. Even this would give a "You need to restart" screen immediately with just maxmem=2048.

The partitions were in order this time like you said to make them in the other thread (Vanilla, Backup, Main), I didnt mess with the Vanilla partition at all while working with drivers.

I think theres some other problem here, when my retail Snow Leopard arrives (tomorrow I hope), I'll give that a go with your guide. Do you think it will work though? Seeing as a distro with drivers already there doesnt even work properly.

By the way, your NforceSLBoot132 DVD doesnt boot on my computer, when it boots from disc it just gives a load of error messages one after the other. Eventually it restarts. Could this be due to some BIOS setting?

Thanks for all the help.

EDIT: So now I'm left with a rather stupid question of "How do I clone partitions properly" lol ;)

EDIT 2: Actually I'll do a reinstall and this time forget about CCC, I'll use disk utility instead. See if that lets me boot into partitions properly.

What are the error messages......it is important to burn the DVD as slowly as possible......also check your BIOS settings against my OS X template for your nForce chipset.......see download link in post #1.....the NforceSLBoot132 DVD assumes you have a PATA (IDE) DVDRW jumper-set and connected to the MOBO as master via an 80-wire IDE cable....... whereas nForceSLBoot132DVD_for_SATA_DVDRW is its name......

I'll check it tomorrow but it seems to fail to load every file. I am using an IDE dvd drive for everything mac related which is set to master. I'll check the BIOS tomorrow too. It looks like verbose but every line is "error: failed to load ....." Or something similar to that. I'll check it properly tomorrow. I burnt the dvd at 4x, the slowest i could. Again, thanks for the help, much appreciated :D
