after you install 10.6.8 do not reboot.. first replace the Appleacpiplatform.kext and IOPCIfamily.kext from Snow Leopard and repair permissions. Then reboot. This should fix your issue and the "PCI configuration begin" lock up. You can find the kext here or google.

@ sybexs

thanks so much for your help!!really appreciate this!

i was trying your tip but had a system uptime almost in the beginning of booting the system.

could you please point me to the files you mean?maybe sen me link?

i was downloading Appleacpiplatform.kext and IOPCIfamily.kext but im not sure if this are the right ones.not sure if they are different kexts around but i guess so.

IOPCIFamily.kext ive downloaded from kexts.com,it says: IOPCIFamily.kext fixed for SNOW 32/64,is this one right?

Appleacpiplatform.kext ive just found one on mediafire.

thanks for your help!!!

Hello wen1,

I also have an L502x like you, and thanks to your excellent guide, it is Snowing Leopard now :)

I have 6GB of RAM and no artifact.

I notice that the artifact problem disappears after I apply the following changes:

- To the smbios file:

<dict>

I get these changes from MaLd0n thread, file: Extra_MacBookPro8_1.zip. Thanks to him

I'm not sure these are the exact steps but I did this two times and it simply worked.

Hope this help.

dxluong,

Thanks for the information. I have 8GB ram now and i do not see artifacts too. I do however see two or three lines on the wallpaper.

I tried the settings you mentioned below but made not difference in lines. I wonder if it makes a big difference when you have 4 GB of ram.

I will probably give it a shot with 4GB soon.

Thanks again.

Anyway wen1,

The key under the Esc key in my keyboard always spells § instead of `

Do you know why? And how to fix it?

Thanks.

Mine does the same thing. I need to do some research on why.

back up the kexts from the initial install of 10.6.3 and after you install 10.6.8 replace them.

maybe you have an idea?!im running still into the same probs as birdibird (l702x with 3d display).

tryd several times, also 3 times with your new guide and 10k542 but my system also stops after the final reboot (with -v) and it says:

ACPI_SMCPlatformPlugin: : start - wait For Service (resource Matching (AppleIntelCPUÜowerManagment) timed out

removal of ACPI_SMCPlatformPlugin before was propper done, touch also...

i couldnt find anyway around, after that i cant even start with ##### -x.

dont really have an idea, only thing is that im using ##### 3.7.1 instaed of 3.7.0.

could this be a problem?also what device is in the dsdt.aml,is it for audio?

has it somthing to do with the 3d and not using optimus?

i would really appreciate some help!

also is there somebody installed mac osx succesfully on l702x and can give me some advice.preferred would be somebody with 3d display...

if i remember right steverings had one,are you still around and could you help me out??

Thanks so much for all your work here,i hope i will finish my installation soon, using it for musicproduction!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the L502x, but I had the same problem, I solved it by doing step 11 twice, once on the first boot as per the guide, then once again after the 10.6.8 upgrade. I guess the upgrade reverts to the original kext.???

If you don't do it after the first boot, you will get a kernel panic when upgrading to 10.6.8 (trust me - trial and error), so you have to do it twice.

wen1, i'm not sure if the guide needs to be updated with this....

Thanks for this awesome guide!

This a rough guide on how to install Snow Leopard on Dell XPS 15 L502x. Might also work for XPS 17 L702X

There are still a few things that do not work. But i am hoping that if i post these here some of you may team up and be able to figure out the things that do not work.

This is put together with input from a lof of great individuals on this forum.

What Works

1. Proper CPU detection

2. Wired Network

3. Intel HD Graphics

4. Native Video resolution through Intel HD 3000 (some artifacts exist with 4GB ram)

5. Webcam

6. Some power management.

7. Audio

What does not work

1. Wifi (get a Dell DW 1510 on ebay, works like a charm. Search for dw1510 or PW934)

2. Sleep

3. Nvidia Graphics

3. External display ports (miniDP, HDMI etc)

Things that you need

1. ##### Legacy Boot CD

2. Retail Mac OSX DVD 10.6.3 (Extracted to a DMG file)

3. 8GB or Larger USB drive

4. 10.6.8 combo update (10k524)

5. A working MAC system (even your own laptop running bare bones 10.6.0 will work). You can just wipe it and reinstall after you create your usb disk.

Your dell comes with MBR partitioned from the the factory. And we also found that the current version of Bios only allows booting from MBR drives (GPT partitioned drives do not boot)

Here are the steps. You will have to perform these steps on a currently functioning mac.

Creating your USB install disk

0. On your xps, boot into windows 7, shrink the partition or find a way to create a new partition with appropriate size for your OSX needs.

1. On a mac, Create 10.6.3 USB drive by using disk utility (Restore the Retail DMG file to USB drive)

2. Now modify two files on USB to enable MBR support. Download the files needed from here http://deviato.wordpress.com/2010/05/06/os...ned-hard-disks/ and copy them to appropriate location on the USB drive as shown on that site.

3. Add USB3 kext to our install USB drive. Download from http://www.kexts.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=612 and extract PXCHD.kext from it. Copy it to "/System/Library/Extensions" on the USB drive.

4. Now you have your 10.6.3 install image ready on a USB drive.

Installing on your laptop

5. Plug the USB drive into one of the blue USB ports (i used one on the left when looking at the laptop)

6. Use ##### Legacy to boot and choose the select USB drive to install with the following options "-v -f GraphicsEnabler=No cpus=1 busratio=20" .

My busratio is 20 for i7-2630qm. look on intels site to figure out what it is for your processor http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=52219

7. It will boot to welcome screen, once you select the launguage and hit next go to disk utility and prep the osx partition you created by formatting it with MAC OS Journalled format.

8. Close Disk Utility and return back to the installation screen. Now select that partition and choose default install options and install.

9. Once install is complete it will restart and fail to boot.

10. Do not worry, put the ##### legacy CD, boot and select the new OSX partition this time with options "-v GraphicsEnabler=No cpus=1 busratio=20" (notice -f is no longer needed)

Go throught the welcome video/setup process (Do not select the webcam to capture snapshot for your icon).

11. Now, remove ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext from IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext with following steps. In a terminal window type the following. You should not see any error messages after each command.

sudo -s
cd /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins
rm -R ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext
touch /System/Library/Extensions

12. Restart the system by selecting restart from the menu. It will take some time to reboot, Wait for it to shutdown. Do not turn the power off by holding power button.

13. Boot with ##### legacy cd again ("-v GraphicsEnabler=No cpus=1 busratio=20").

14. Once back in Snow leopard, Copy 10.6.8 combo update (use your wired network connection, it should work) to desktop. Install 10.6.8 Combo update (Do not reboot)

15. Run ##### (3.7.0) with following options (Do not Reboot after completion)

System Utilities

FakeSMC

NullCPUPowermanagement

USB3 Reneseas Kext

Chimera v1.4.1

MacBook Pro8,1

Kext Helper

16. Now extract dsdt from the attached zip and rename it to DSDT.aml and copy it to the root of your snow leopard drive. Make sure it is named exactly "DSDT.aml" (case-sensitive)

17. Edit com.apple.Boot.plist in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist to include the following

<key>device-properties</key>
<string>600000000100000001000000540000000100000002010c00d041030a000000000101060000027fff04001e00
00004100410050004c002c006f0073002d0069006e0066006f0000001800000030490111111108000001f01f01000000
10070000</string>
<key>DSDT</key>
<string>DSDT.aml</string>

18. Install all the 5 kexts from the attached l502x zip file with Kext Helper.

19. Now Restart by selecting restart from the menu.

20. Now the laptop should boot with no boot options required, Native Resolution and Audio should work smoothly.

Update 5/28/2011: Native video resolution now works.

Thanks to Kyle_C and Lenovo3000 from this thread: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...50332&st=60

Research Stuff:

Nvidia:

Can possibly be enabled as a second graphics card. It appears that optimus is purely a driver implementation where they switch between the two available cards based on the need (At least on the windows side).

miniDP is connected to Intel HD

HDMI is connected to nVidia on L502x

Here is the messages i see when i boot with GraphicsEnabler = Yes

nVidia Unknown 0MB NVc1 [10de:0df5] :: PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x1,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0)

ERROR: dcbtable_version is 0x10

ERROR: nVidia ROM Patching Failed!

Yes the DSDT did have edits for Audio. mald0n edited the DSDT for L502x.

It should work out of the box right?

Not sure how it worked when you did it, but I had to do step 11 twice, once according to the guide, then again after the 10.6.8 update.

Also, what kext enables the sd card reader?

I did not have to do it twice. I wonder why. I did not reboot until all the steps were complete after applying 10.6.8. Is it possible that you were using the new version of 10.6.8?

I do not have the card reader setup. It is a Jmicron card reader (JMB389) per dell's driver download.

I remember reading a thread about Jmicron card reader, let me see if i can find it.

Sorry, have not had much time to try these. Please report if you get them working.

thanks

I don't have a Dell XPS L502X but I do have a Intel Core i7 SandyBridge 2630QM and I'm trying to get the integrated graphics running. How would the steps differ from yours? Do I need a different DSDT or just not use one?

The guide should work for the most part. Skip the DSDT steps.

To get native resolution, you do not need a DSDT.

But lots of other devices will not function without the DSDT. reach out mald0n for help with DSDT via hist DSDT thread.

I followed the guide - step 12 says to reboot, before applying the 10.6.8 update, I guess that would explain it.

I'll try the sd card things when I have a chance.

Thanks for the guide, I got it working. I'm only missing audio, ethernet, and wifi. My ethernet and wifi devices aren't supported. I will probably get a wifi card if I can. Anyone have any suggestions (one with bluetooth would be nice)? Also, Voodoo seems to glitch my audio for some reason (It routes my built-in mic to my speakers). I'm not sure what I should do about that.

Hi

Thanks for the guide

I followed your instructions to install Snow Leopard on my L502X.

Everything went well until I finished step 18 and rebooted,

but after reboot I get the boot0:test and boot0:error message.

I tried installing the bootloader manually, but I get the same problem.

Can anyone help me out?

Hi wen1,

I got audio working with your kexts, stable, no distortion, but the quality is not good, sound like mono. I have to use BOOM.

I don't know if AppleHDA kext affect the audio quality, and the IOAudioFamily kext as well.

The driver at the following link has better quality (with AppleHDADisabler) but with background noise and sometimes it causes kernel panic.

http://code.google.com/p/voodoohda/

Is your sound quality good?

@wen1,sybexs,steverings...

hi guys,

finally i got to the point that i can boot into 10.6.8 (on my l702x with 3D),

but to get there i had to install the kernel from bridgehelper2.1 and had to replace AppleACPIPlatform.kext and IOPCIfamily.kext after updating to 10.6.8.

all the rest i used exactly wen1´s guide.

But now the Nvidia Card (555) dont work (only 1024x768,3mb vram)and also in hardware profiler it says System-Bus Speed is 400Mhz,but the cpu is right.

Does anybody have an idea, could be the DSDT causing the problem?

If i boot with I-Boot legacy it comes up in 1920x1080.

Soon as i use ##### and DSDT it wont work.

I would really thankfull for any idea, since im trying for 2 weeks now to get this to an end.

I attched pics of the hardwrae profiler showing the graphic status and the 400mhz issue!

Thanks a lot guys for your help!!!!!!

Are you using your own dsdt or the one supplied in the first post? When using a dsdt it is always good to generate your own in windows and then make the edits necessary to the dsdt to make it work properly.

To get the 555M working use http://www.tonymacx86.com/1010110101/tonym...pdate-2.0.0.zip. I believe everything works including QE/CI with that installed. I havent tried the hdmi ports tho. One thing i am still having problems with is the audio. No matter what i do i can not get sound to work.

When you get your DSDT properly edited things like bluetooth will be enabled (depending on card). What are the complete specs of your laptop? I have the 17 hd i72720 with gt555m and 16 gig of ram. Also are you booting in 32 or 64?

Are you using your own dsdt or the one supplied in the first post? When using a dsdt it is always good to generate your own in windows and then make the edits necessary to the dsdt to make it work properly.

hi sybexs,

thanks for your answer.

yes i was using the dsdt from wen1,which i think is made for the optimus, problem is i have no idea how to edit the dsdt in the right way.

im using the dell l702x with gt555m with 3D,cpu is i7 2720.i use 2 hdd´s and the intel advanced 2630 (bluetooth is working on this).system is running in 64bit....so seems we have the same xps,is yours 3D?

if you could help me with the dsdt i would be really happy!

sound worked after the 10.6.8 update but i had to go to the audio settings and had to select the internal speaker,by default its set to digital...i guess you checked that but just in case you didnt you should have a look...in fact i thought it didnt worked for me because normally its set to internal speakerit wont change to headphone automaticly if you plug in one.

maybe i will send my dsdt to the guy wen1 mentioned, hope he can help.but if you have an idea please let me know.

btw, which kernel you are using and did you made a benchmark with Geekbench??mine is showing around 7300 points,it should be at 10000-11000.would be interested in other peoples benchmark results.

im not sure if the kernel from bridgehelper2.1 is the best one,but its the only one working for me!

Thanks and greets kai

btw. the system-bus speed issue (mine shows 400mhz) seems a "bug" in chimera as they say here:

Hello rawbkk,

Your system has 3D, which means it does not have optimus. Just patch a new DSDT (ask MaLd0n) and install like sybexs said and all should be fine.

About the kernel in bridgehelper2.1, I think it is more stable than one in 10.6.8.

rawbkk,

A custom DSDT for your laptop is the answer to most of your other problems. REach out to mald0n for help. He is a great guy and responds very fast. I will link the thread here in a minute

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...523&st=3820

use this to generate the files first and then reach out to mald0n via the first link

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...st&id=81816

For the nvidia card, you just need to get the right nvidia driver as mentioned by sybexs earlier.

Sound quality is not great but is definitely usable. It is kind of boomy and missing on the high frequencies.

The DSDT in the fist post is purely for the L502X. I will add a note for that effect.

Also, if you do get a DSDT created and share it here, i will add it to the first post.

Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for this awesome guide! I wanted to know if the sleep issue has been solved. That is the only thing holding back my full switch to os x on my L502X.

Thanks.

Sleep still does not work properly for me. I have seen some kexts posted by folks on other thread. Please share if anyone come across something that fixes sleep.

im using the tonymac nvidia update driver and it works fine as long as im booting with ##### legacy without dsdt,i think here is the problem...so nvidia works fine just need to get the dsdt sorted out,i was sending it just before to MaLd0n.

i will post it here when i got it to work as well as the steps different from your guide so people with 3d/no optimus can use your guide.

sound is fine for me,the boom thing made it even better but in fact for me quality is not that important since im using an external card for music production, but the boom programm with right eq settings made the sound much better.

here is a link for that tool:

Boom 1.1 Sound Improver for Mac

for sleepenabler you may try this one...i think there was one guy with l502x saying this one worked for him on 10.6.8,but i couldnt try it so far since my system is not running 100%,if this one doesnt work im sorry ;-)!!

Sleep Enabler 10.6.7

Thanks also to dxluong and sybexs for their help!!!!!!!!!!!

and of course to everybody here helping other people out!
