Hey injectxnl, you should try this. I'm not expert on boot flags, but maybe it's not reading your string the way you have an extra 'string' field. I specify 64-bit in the 'arch' key, not the 'Kernel Flags'. I think if you want multiple strings under a key, you just put them in one 'string' field separated by spaces.

Anyway, I have sleep working with the latest sleepenabler kext with this method.

	<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>pmVersion=23</string>
<key>arch</key>
<string>x86_64</string>

Hi guys, I've installed Andy's package and all it's ok, but one important thing (and obviously dvd player). My Voodoo HDA prefpane has stopped to working. Every command slider, including PCM (for volume control) is disabled.

I've notice that in system preferences/sound was added a new dispositive called "Digital-Out HDMI". In fact now in the Voodoo prefpane it's selected just "Digital-Out HDMI" and no other possibilities are shown to select. So I can control no more volume, apart from own applications controller. But this it's so bad.

I've searched for a new Voodoo HDA driver for my integrated audio (see below in my signature), but nothing new I've found. What can I do to resolve this annoying problem?

Thanks

Okay so here's the whole sorted tale, and I still don't have Andy's bugfix package working.

I finally got the ##### + Retail disc to install. I had to use the following

-x -v GraphicsEnabler=No busratio=20

Managed to get it installed, updated to 10.6.7 and installed Chameleon with ##### along with fixes for Audio, Ethernet etc.

Installed the bugfix package, same exact problem, bootloops. Booted back to #####, got into the OS, used ##### to install Chameleon RC5 & ATI drivers, rebooted, worked fine except I'm getting the Garbled MiniDP Ports at boot. Unplug and replug one and OS X seems to detect them properly and away I go.

Assumed installing DX58SO Drivers 1.3 would fix that like it does with iATKOS S3v2. No luck, hangs the install.

Booted back to #####, booted with that loaded, blew away the Extra directory and reran ##### to load vanilla Chameleon 2 RC5 and it boots fine again with Garbled screens.

The Garbled screens thing I need to know how to fix, and DVD Player still crashes.

##### + ##### + Retail is definitely a better, faster installer but not if I can't get monitors that work at boot. Any suggestions anyone?

I've been looking at the framebuffer issue today following BCC9's excellent guide to ATI personalities. I'm using the XFX 6870 reference card with five ports.

Dumping the bios with bcc9's radeon_bios_decode shows the port info for the 6870:

$ ./radeon_bios_decode < XFX.HD6870.1024.101007_1.bin
ATOM BIOS Rom:
SubsystemVendorID: 0x1682 SubsystemID: 0x3100

So we have two mdp, one hdmi, one dvi-d, and one dvi-1 that maps to two possible outputs digital or analog vga through a DAC.

Looking at the port mapping in IOREGEX when using the default "Radeon Frame Buffer" shows:

Port # Connecter Type

0x0 0x400

0x1 0x400

0x2 0x800

0x3 0x4

0x4 0x4

Using BCC9's ATI Personality perl script to dump the personalites from the ATI6000controller gives us

Mucha's guide builds on BCC9's work and covers parsing and hex editing the personalities.

Looking at Duckweed we see it only has four outputs so it doesn't really match the five port reference design. Since it only has one DVI port using it disables the DVI-I port and probably messes up the the available resolution parsing depending which ports are used.

I'm not clear on wether the port at 000030 is LVDS or DVI.

Seems like the options are

Don't force a framebuffer and let the driver build it dynamically. All the ports works and the speed is what it is. I think the crashes from the unrecognized selector error will probably get fixed in the next version of the drivers.

Use Duckweed and give up the DVI-I port.

Use Gibba as is, have all the ports working and give up performance.

Use Mucha's guide to patch the Gibba personality in the ATI6000controller.kext to make it map the reference card's ports properly.

????

All credit goes to BCC9 and Mucha for spelunking the ATI drivers and Andy for splicing the boot file.

If I don't care about GeekBench and DVD Player, is there any reason for me to use a specific FrameBuffer. Will it be possible for me to achieve a performance increase on a 6870 card?

Hey injectxnl, you should try this. I'm not expert on boot flags, but maybe it's not reading your string the way you have an extra 'string' field. I specify 64-bit in the 'arch' key, not the 'Kernel Flags'. I think if you want multiple strings under a key, you just put them in one 'string' field separated by spaces.

Anyway, I have sleep working with the latest sleepenabler kext with this method.

	<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>pmVersion=23</string>
<key>arch</key>
<string>x86_64</string>

Thanks haysoos123! That did the trick!

I now have a 6870 model from ASUS(the same as Ragae). In WoW with performance set to good in full resolution on my Cinema Display it runs pretty crappy. Could this be because I only have a 450W PSU?

Andy I installed your ATI Package to try the Duckweed framebuffer. I got really bad performance, like 10fps in CineBench. Now when I try to boot with GraphicsEnabler = No, I still have the same problem. How can I reverse your package? ;)

To reverse it you would need to extract and reinstall the ATI kexts from the 10.6.6 combo update. But before you do that can you detail your system please - motherboard, cpu, ram, Snow Leopard version etc. Something is very wrong if you are only getting 10fps using the new kexts and no enabler (are you sure they all installed cleanly with no errors?)

It's safe to say that something weird is going on. I just powered down my PC and left it off without power for some time. Then when I came home after a 30 minute walk I powered it on again. Now it's working again. I did reverse to the other Kexts before I posted here, and it didnt help.

My system is as follows:

 • MOBO: MSI P55-GD65
 • RAM: 4GD DDR3
 • CPU: i7 860 1.8GHz
 • GPU: ASUS EAH6870
 • PSU: Corsair 450W
 • HDD: 2x 500GB SATA2

Kexts in Extra:

 • EvOreboot.kext
 • FakeSMC.kext
 • IONetworkingFamily.kext
 • JMicron36xATA.kext

com.apple.Boot.plist:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">

<string>pmVersion=23</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>No</string>
<key>Timeout</key>
<string>8</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Before I rebooted I actually removed a bunch of stuff from my plist, and changed Timeout to 8 instead of 1. I cannot see how this should have made the difference, I honestly think my poweroff caused it to get back to normal.

Another thing that is weird, is that this GFX newer seems to power up when I try to play games and other demanding stuff. For instance in WoW nothing happens, and at settings on "Good" it is laggy in the new zones and in cities.

Hope you have suggestions.

When you say 'it's working again' do you mean that the performance is back where it should be?

If the answer is yes is it possible your card is overheating and throttling itself down?

What does EvOreboot.kext do and are you sure you need it?

Would you consider flashing a different bios to your 6870 to eliminate it being a duff bios revision?

Oh one other thing - WoW does lag in major cities - thats just {censored} poor coding from Blizzard. Even in windows using crossfired 6870's that would get me 200+ fps in some areas I could still drop below 60 in Stormwind!!!!

When you say 'it's working again' do you mean that the performance is back where it should be?

If the answer is yes is it possible your card is overheating and throttling itself down?

It was working again yes. But while I have done nothing at all, now when I run Cinebench again(even though nothing else is running) I only get like 9FPS. Maybe it is throttling down I don't know. However my chassie is open, and the card isn't any hot when I touch it.

I am of course willing to flash whatever can help me :P

I think EvOreboot.kext enables me to shut down or something. Not sure that I need it.

I'm giving up on the ##### + Retail install option. I've done it about a dozen times, tried generating a custom DSDT, tried #####, tried any version of Chameleon available and current and any number of combinations of kexts and cannot get a vanilla install to boot without messed up screens, or sometimes at all without KP.

I'm going back to iATKOS s3 v2 + ^Andy^'s Kexts (non Bugfix) + DX58SO Installer 1.30 which works with everything except source games, DVD player and Geek Bench. None of which I actually care about. Sorry I can't be more help ^Andy^ but my main machine has basically been offline for about a week now troubleshooting and I can't do it anymore. New job starting in 2 weeks is stressful enough let alone the added hair pulling of coming home to a computer in shambles. Thanks for the kexts that work with my setup and the help to attempt to get me to a retail install but I'll stick with iATKOS till my next build (haven't ruled out just buying a new motherboard without so many issues.).

Hex - sorry we couldn't get to the bottom of this one but I do understand how you feel. I would have run out of patience by now too (although that's probably not true because I can be a stubborn {censored} when it comes to getting stuff working on my pc).

I have a 5850. I followed Andy's instructions exactly, and when I tried to boot it just sat at the Apple loading screen with the spinning wheel forever and never loaded the OS.

I saw that some people tried to install various updates before installing the kexts, but that doesn't seem like an option for me because when I try to install an update I get the exact same result described above. My reasoning was that maybe this is a problem with the GPU, so if I get the graphics working correctly then maybe I'll be able to install updates and other drivers.

Any idea what could be wrong?

Boot verbose and see where it stalls.

The only line that looks like an error to me is the one that says :

** AppleSMBusPCI::start failed to get acpi path for provider

The last few lines read:

Waiting for DSMOS...
DSMOS has arrived
** Device in slot: SLOT--1 **
AppleTyMCEDriver::start coreVIDPID = 0xffffffff Number of packages = 1 Number of cpus = 8 memory monitor trough MCA

Finally was able to run Cinebench.

This is what i got:

screen_shot_2011-04-05_at_11.27.01_pm_5cb7.png

32fps.. that's kinda slow. Other 6850 and 6870's go around 40-45fps.

btw.. is there a complete list of available framebuffers for 6xxx cards? I get the feeling that i didn't test every single one.

That's on par with I got using the same engine. Like mentioned previously, Cinebench may not be the best benchmark and they're just that, Benchmarks. So far my setup has no gaming issues (aside from Source games) and it is performing smooth as silk.

True, it's just benchmarks. I wouldn't have paid much attention to it if my system would run smoothly.

However, the desktop effects just aren't that smooth as they were with my previous XFX 5770. For example Spaces animation is not that smooth, as well as the "fan" animation in the dock and sometimes exposé isn't even that smooth.

So i was thinking maybe there are even more framebuffers to try. Or maybe i'll just have to wait for another update (10.6.8 or 10.7).

Just finished converting from a dead Nvidia 8400GS to a shiny new Sapphire 6870 using ^Andy^'s files and instructions. After several attempts to fiddle with permissions I finally got it.

GA-EP45-UD3R with a Sapphire Radeon 6870, full QE/CI working great. So far I have just the one monitor hooked up, which is recognized automatically with all supported resolutions.

FYI, for those of you switching from NVidia to ATI, you might find this interesting: I had to remove the deviceinfo key from com.apple.Boot.plist as well as set GraphicsEnabler=No. As long as the deviceinfo key existed, the system kept believing I had the NVidia card installed.

After that I just had to get the ATI kexts loaded and get the permissions right, and up it went. No muss, no fuss.

Could be specific to your rig as I didn't have to do that when I swapped my GTX 460 to a 6850.

Nobody have ideas about audio problem? I have explained it on page 14...I would reinstall Voodoo HDA, but I can't find latest realease for my motherboard (P5Q pro turbo).

I hope you can help me.

Thanks

EDIT

I have update the Voodoo HDA driver with the latest version (2.7.2), but nothing has changed. All the controls in prefpane are disabled and I cannot change volume in any way.

Have you any idea to solve the audio problem (I remember you that before Andy's package installation all audio works fine)?

The package only installs the latest ATI Graphics kexts - it doesn't touch your audio at all!

Hmm, seems i have a bit of a problem with screen tearing but it's only at the top of the screen. It's noticeable when i move an application horizontally at the top of the screen. I can also notice it when i play movies on fullscreen. Anyone else noticed this?
