jpa
what card do you have? Every 6870 reference works with this procedure, not just the Sapphire (HIS, PowerColor, XFX, Gigabyte,...) the sapphire of andy is better fps in cinebech....
Guest ^Andy^
the sapphire of andy is better fps in cinebech.... Thats probably more to do with the i5 2500k processor or the slightly overclocked bios that I have used on the 6870 - St1v is correct - all reference 6870's should be the same. czo3mvzoxfx
Exactly, my old E6600 is holding my video card back. For comparison, I'll do the benchmarks again in a couple of week with a new i5-2500k like Andy
rominator
Got an XFX 6870 from Newegg. Working beautifully in Mac Pro 4,1. (I think AGPM issue is only with Nvidia cards) 4 displays, OpenGL, QE/CI, cleans the house and irons the cat. PERFECT !!! Using complete 10.6.6 from MBP, likely only need a few of the kexts though. (Note "Thunderbolt" to left of 6000 controller) I would say 6950/70 will come in future update, or will require some deeper digging in kexts we have now. Thanks to you guys !!! Cinebench is kinda embarassing, My mac has 8 cores...but the cheapest 8 cores, ie, @ 2.26 Ghz. The other cards tested are mostly mine too. I also have a 2006 with a Quad 3.0. Cinebench is very CPU bound, even the OpenGl part. Running in OSX is an embarassment. Neat OS, but Graphics Performance is not what it was in past compared to Windows. Haven't paid for Novabench. BTW, card does NOT have shutdown/sleep issues. To run 4 displays, you will need to have real DP monitors, or use Active DP adapters.

Guest ^Andy^
Just for info guys, I tried this same routine on my spare hackintosh with a sapphire 5870 card and it also works. So it's now possible to also use 5870's without an injector or graphics enabler. I suspect this will also work for other cards.

So it's now possible to also use 5870's without an injector or graphics enabler. I suspect this will also work for other cards. we have tried with reg 5870 and it worked well, but the Eye6 version still has issues. All MDPs are Legacy only, ie they pass through single link DVI, but no DP funtion, though System Profiler seemed to think otherwise I tried with 4870 and it worked, but still suffered from single link on upper port. I think someone reported that 4890 still no QE/CI but some kext fixing might solve that haven't tried 3870 yet. 2600XT didn't work I have only been trying cards that have device id like Mac OEM, hard to say about oddballs We were trying in Lion, just now realising that Lion ",Magic" actually starts in MBP 10.6.6 I just started a thread at Netkas place regarding "why" Interesting thing is that named FB may be on way out. My 6870 just says "RadeonFrameBuffer" where before they had to have names.
Mitalca
I'll give it a try with my 6850 as soon as I can I think it should work as well, since the IDs are in the kexts
Setura
My 6850 is for some reason stuck on a res of 1400x1050 on a 1920x1080 monitor and system profiler says that no kext is in use, despite the 6xxx series one sitting in its correct place. vram should be 1 gig but is reported as 256meg and my mouse is gittery. No such problems with my old 8800 gtx on the same snow leopard. (for some resaon the old card ran natively so I don't think I need to remove anything...) help... Mitalca
SL version? did you install the MBP 2011 kexts, and did everything Andy said?? for the way you are talking, doesn't sound like it
geticus
My System is an Asus P8P67 Pro with an i5 2500k and 8gig of ram. I use a pair of crossfired AMD 6870's - one a Sapphire card the other an OEM (I have flashed them both to use the same slightly overclocked bios image). I'm using the latest Sandy bridge friendly chameleon build from ##### along with the kernel and kexts from my posts above. Other than the usual fakesmc.kext and specific kexts for my sata controllers, usb3, network and audio (all of which can be found in ##### for this board) there isn't much to tell. I boot into 64bit with no kernel flags. Looks like the built in bluetooth is detected too (I have the icon in the menu bar at least). Looking at the spec in your signature st1v you should be able to use the latest ##### cd to boot up but be sure to specify GraphicsEnabler=n as a kernel parameter when you try. Assuming you are starting from a 10.6.6 install once booted you can install the new kexts using kexthelper (this will install them to /System/Library/Extensions). You can then install chameleon (hunt around for the unofficial rc5 installer package - you shouldn't need the experimental ATI support but it shouldnt matter either way as long as you specify graphicsenabler=no or just delete the <key>GraphicsEnabler</key> and <string>?</string> from your com.apple.Boot.plist file in Extra). Reboot and fingers crossed you should be done. Andy, this is nothing to do with ATI 6..., but with the new kernel. I'm trying to use the kernel you've upload for my MSI P67A-GD65 with i5-2400 and my system is keep re-booting. Have you any idea what can be the problem ? Did you just replace the legacy_kernel with the new one ? Or I have to do something more ? Thank you

After that failed I toyed around a bit with my system which achieved nothing.

Thank you Try repairing permissions just to be sure the mach_kernel has correct permissions and if that makes no difference try installing the sandy bridge version of chameleon from #####. Guest ^Andy^
OK this should make things easier. I have created a package that should install the kexts and set the permissions. ATI Graphics Update Package Hopefully it will work correctly and means the install is now simple. Just disable GraphicsEnabler (or delete your injector if you have used one), run the package and reboot when the installation completes!
