I'm trying a different method (oddly enough, based on Apple's official method) - start with Snow and choose a second VHD.

 

It's based on the Snow Leopard VM, as that's what you start with (I have one of those already), but involves adding another VHD (SCSI, of course). If you are using VMware as your host, either burn the DMG or convert it (I used a three-stage/two-program method - DMG2IMG first, then PowerISO; with PowerISO, I converted it first to DAA from IMG, then to ISO. Safer by far, though also slower. The resultant ISO is good for any program that can handle them, including VMware - I used the Snow ISO to create the test VM in the first place.).

After installing Snow (just as you normally would on a Mac), don't install the VMware Tools yet. Instead, shut down the VM, because you need to create a new VHD to attach. Stick with the default size and details (40 GB and SCSI).

 

Darn - apparently, it won't let you boot from a second VHD (got a boot failure message when attempting to select it in BM), unless I'm supposed to boot from the Install DVD/image. So I'll try that instead (since everything is virtual, if it croaks, I'll just wipe the VM and start over).

 

 

Yes and it didn't work for me. I'm not too bothered as I can use the real Apple approved method in VMware to do it.

 

Thats the method I'm using.

 

The unlocker actually plays into it, though.

 

I create an ISO from each DMG (one each of Snow and Lion) - in my case, I use the three-stage/two-program Windows method (DMG2IMG and PowerISO) and create an OS X Server 10.6 (Snow) VM using the Snow ISO I created earlier (either 10.6.0 or 10.6.3 will work - a physical DL DVD of a non-specific Snow DVD will also work, of course).

What worked is a variation of the sysprobs.com method detailed earlier in this thread (page 5, next-to-last post on the page). The variation is only in the size of the partition (I made it larger, so files that are useful can be added; thus, 10 GB, not 5). It is bootable (therefore, it can directly replace an optical drive or ISO in a VM), and there's no reason it wouldn't work with a physical drive used in a VM (for exporting VMs as physical Hacks, with a proper HD-based bootloader installed, natch). Next up is to see if I can export the same partition to use in Fusion. However, I don't see any reason why it *wouldn't* work in Fusion.

 

The acid test (which I haven't done yet) is a from-scratch install.

 

Got it down to a routine.

 

After running the install and the first reboot (Lion is configured to install as an upgrade, not a new install, by default - that is a large reason why installs to empty partitions are such a pain) switch to the modified partition you created earlier as your startup disk (via System Preferences->Startup Disk) and restart the VM (which will, in fact, prompt you after making the switch). The reboot kicks off the second stage of the Lion install (apparently, no files are copied during this stage - in fact, there is zero user action required). In my VM (remember, only a single GB of RAM), it chews up about thirty minutes. One more reboot, and you should be comfortably in Lion.

 

I've done two Lion VMs myself this way (to prove the method works), with the second using the custom install/kickstart partition I created during the first one.

 

Since all my Lionage is in VMware, not native, I have not been able to shake down what really works, and what doesn't, except for one biggie - Safari in Lion, due to Flash issues, is largely a zilch. I use it as a means to fetch Firefox 4 RC, which - surprise - actually runs as well in Lion as in does in Snow.

 

Because this is a Developer Preview, I used a rather fitting name for my VM's main hard drive (second VM) - Clarence.

(Clarence really existed, and was rather infamous because of one ailment that would normally be fatal in the wild - he was both astigmatic, and suffered from being cross-eyed. He was rescued by a vet in Africa, and wound up in a TV series and several movies - all based on either Clarence's life, or that of the African *rescue hospital for animals* in Africa that saved him. Astigmatism means one eye is stronger than the other, which is bad enough for people - I know from experience, because I am one - but throw in being cross-eyed atop that, and a lion? Astigmatic lions have trouble catching prey, and atop that would get seriously harassed by hyena packs. With the Safari issue, what other ills are lurking underneath (just like Clarence's eyesight problems)? Hence the name.)

 

If later DPs leak, I'll be using the names of other famous real-world lions as I keep building fake Macs virtually using them.)

Have 10.7 DP running on my Win 7 x64 VMWare Workstation 7.1.

 

Well, the VmWare is running fine, 1400x900 but switching to 1920x1200 gives errors, tried the

EnsoniqAudioPCI_v1.0.3_Common_Installer.pkg but even using Pacifist + kext utility-) no sound in System Profiler...?

You could call it a Help Desk in some way.

 

It is not for users like yourself telling people "If they need help then go to Apple or buy a Mac" like as nobody here is going to help them.

For me the nvram didn't help, I had numerous issues booting both Lion and SL with the EFI VM.......until I downloaded a pre-built VM. I just clone it, delete the disk and re-create a new one each time I want to make a new Mac VM now, Lion and SL both installed flawlessly with this VM.

 

 

If your having troubles, it might be worth giving it a try, just add a SCSI HDD.

If you want a install disk. Restore "InstallESD.dmg" to a usb drive. It boots fine here on my mbp 17".

hey so does this mean that i can install 10.7 lion with it cause i tryed it on my dell b110 with stock intel mobo intel gma 945 pentium 4 3.00 ghz 1.5 gb of ram and at most it just booted up then lags on the gray screen where you see the apple icon but but no spinning progress circle below it help please

 

my system is able to run the kalyway 10.5.2 an also the snow leopard portable from my 8 gb usb but some some how i dont know how to make it work with 10.7 please help

I didn't have any issues. I just converted InstallESD.dmg to .cdr using Disk Utility on my Hack. Then I created a new Mac OS X Server 10.6 64-bit" vm in VMWare Fusion, booted the install .cdr image. After a couple of reboots it stalled but thats because I had to choose the correct boot.efi executable in the EFI menu in VMWare Fusion.

Then I was on with stage 2 of the install and soon after I was running Lion. I then copied the VM over to my Windows partition and launched it in VMWare Workstation. Plain sailing.

 

Just make sure you have a legit "Install Mac OS X" app from App Store. You never know what happened with those something something out there.

 

 

But I run with a compatible CPU (Core 2 Duo). Maybe there are issues out there for you i3, i5, i7 owners.

 

If you want to install from scratch in VMWare Workstation (not Fusion) you must change the CD-ROM from a IDE device to a SCSI device. It will not boot otherwise. Fusion by default uses a SCSI device. Albert's Unlocker does not fix this so you have to change it yourself. Also you need to use the Disk Utility once booted to partition the harddisk as VMWare Worksatation does not auto-prepare a "Macintosh HD" disk like Fusion does.
