Apple has just announced the release of a new version of its popular beta software which allows windows to run natively on Intel-based Macintosh computers.

BootCamp Beta 1.1 comes with several new enhancements, including:

  • Easier partitioning using preset buttons for popular sizes
  • iSight camera support
  • Built-in microphone support
  • Right-click when pressing the right-hand Apple key on Apple keyboards
  • Improved Apple keyboard support including Delete, PrintScreen, NumLock, and ScrollLock keys

Among the list of new features, iSight and Built-in microphone support rated among the top most requested features for users of Boot Camp. Will this be a blow to Parallels virtualization software for the new Intel-based Macs?

While I don't think is a blow to Parallels (in my mind Boot Camp and Parallels are for two different things and appeal to two different type of users), this announcement is pretty nice.

iSight and Mic support make this update alone worth it.

rogabean, generally I do tend to agree with you. But the one thing that I will say is that I hate not being able to use my iSight on MSN Messenger in Parallels. I have often doubted the quality of the iSight signal sent over aMSN, especially when compared to photobooth. I'm anxious to see how it works now in Boot Camp

True True. I should have expanded. To me Parallels is aimed (right now anyway) at the same people who would have used VPC. They need to run Excel, or maybe some special software that has no OS X equivalent. Maybe just to test things in.

Boot Camp is for those who need to run a full speed Windows and have access to their hardware properly, such as you with the iSight camera. That is why I said iSight and the Mic make this update worth it.

And hell who knows this might actually benefit indirectly Parallel users. If Parallels can get the iSight camera to show up, Apple has now provided the driver.

Honestly it's win-win all around.

Hey Colonels! So do the new drivers support right clicking with the two touch on the touchpad as well?

I would be also most interested in this news.

I assume that the drivers are for ctrl+clicking, but I'll find out shortly.

UPDATE I haven't gotten right clicking to work at all except for with a USB mouse. I'll keep trying to get it to work.

The new iSight driver. :(

bronxbomber, after installation there will be an option to burn a new Drivers CD. Insert a blank disc and burn away. Then boot into XP and run the installation software on the disc, that should be all you need to get the new drivers up and running!

Installed it tonight, and the iSight works fine with Windows Live Messenger. It's not as clear as running iChat in OS X, but still, it's pretty cool to be able to use it finally.

I guess what would be really cool is if iChat in OS X can video chat with Live Messenger in XP/Vista someday. But I understand that's probably a pretty tall order.

So... there was a trackpad driver installed... but it didn't really do anything for trackpad functionality. I mean.. I can still track and click... there still isn't any tapping or double scrolling. --- Also has anyone figured out how to perform secondary keyboard functions like print screen and scroll lock? I can't find it documented...

right clicking works and is a nicer reach in my opinion, though the right click gets stuck and i find myself tapping right apple to release it for normal clicking... bliuetooth is working fine despite other complaints and isight is working :D. all around an AWESOME update.
