UPDATE

Hey everyone, I had some personal things I had to take care of today but I'm back at it now.

So here is what I've found: It's a Chameleon / configuration issue. I've tried some different hard drives, etc., same issue. So I'm working on it now and will report once resolved.

Sorry everyone. I had no idea this problem was laying waiting for me like a land mine. I will be getting to bed here pretty soon so I can get up early tomorrow and hit it hard.

Hey man, take your time....

At the end of the day, you will work it out and make us all very happy.

By the way, have you turned on the news? :) The install guide may be irrelevant if they continue to have trouble with the reactors in Japan lol.

Thanks again for spending so much time on this project!

Thanks very much for comments CableGuy187! Just the encouragement I need before heading off to finally get some sleep!

I'll be at it again tomorrow!

Status Update

Hey everyone,

I've been researching this issue quite a bit and have realized it is important to resolve now as it could have further reaching implications later. Even though this is a big pain, especially for me, some great things have actually come from this already.

I'm sorry I got everyone all excited about the release and even gave a date (which you should NEVER do until you're completely ready), but I really did not foresee this issue coming to light.

So at this point, there isn't a projected release date. This issue must be resolved and I assure you, pending any other unforeseen issues, once resolved the release should be shortly after that.

Resolving this issue will result in an important, fundamental change in overall system configuration. This is why it can't be ignored. It is at a very low level.

Sorry again, but this is really tough stuff... :(

STATUS UPDATE

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE!

That bug is

C R U S H E D !

I found a very simple trick to resolve this issue! Now ALL disks will work. If you are using USB cradles, or other intermediary USB devices, they will work. You can now create a SATA based Mac OS X Install DVD device, AND IT WILL WORK TOO (and is really fast)! So now your MIID can be on a flash drive while your OS X Install device can be on a USB hard drive, extSATA hard drive, flash drive, or what ever.

Here are some of the things that were discovered in the process of crushing this bug:

- During the OS Installer phase, WE HAVE LAN ACCESS! (Great for accessing files)

- I finally discovered the secret on how to get video BIOS rom images to load. (This is important to being able to get temperature and fan speed info from GPUs, which currently this still isn't quite working), but now that we can load the ROM file we are that much closer.

- Greatly simplified file structure for boot files / MIID: No need for a Preboot.dmg anymore!

I'm going to stop with those, there are more, but those are some of the big ones.

So while this little detour has been annoying, frustrating, and time consuming, the results have (in the end) been worth it. :thumbsup_anim: (and I mean that.)

So I'm no longer going to make the mistake of announcing a "projected" release date, as I'm tired of being jinxed. Plus I have some personal life things that have been put on hold WAY too long because of all of this, so I have to do some catch-up work now too.

Also, one casualty of the night was I somehow Borked my main OS X desktop in conducting all these tests. I cannot get it to boot. Fortunately, I have my OSXRepair install, which IS working! :) SO GLAD I HAVE IT! So I can access my files and even open and use them, so that's awesome. But I have to get my main OS X back up and running again.

BUT KNOW THIS: The next time I say "The release will be on such-and-such day and time.", you will be able to count on it because that means it's actually already "done" and I just have to deal with all the last steps such as writing readmes, getting the new thread ready, uploading files, and going live!

So the big bug is dead, the road block has been removed, I will be moving forward again, and soon we will ALL be HAPPY!

Mammoth,

Good news indeed, we are all looking forward to trying v2, do not forget personal life stuff should come first, not always easy to keep the right balance, got the teashirt, LoL.

Cheers,

MSoK!

mammoth,

that is fantastic news!!!!.

@ all,

has anyone upgraded to 10.7? if not what would it take to do so?

Jason,

Yes, but under VMware, not sure I want to run Lion yet physical, but will give it a go on a spare disk, and report back. Working fine under both VMware Workstation on Windows and VMware Fusion under OS X, have a look at the following topic:

Yea!!!!

I got my machine back! I compared root directories of my main OS X and OSXRepair and discovered my /sbin directory had gotten deleted. I copied back over from OSXRepair, rebooted... back in business!

Happy day! Now for some continued work on v2.00!

@Mammoth

When you are ready to release V2, can I install OSX on my secondary HD? I DON'T like to open my new machine ;) so is there a way to manage this to have OSX installed on my second HD ?

Boot from windows (EASY BCD) to boot into chameleon ?? :)

I accidentally did this yesterday!!! I tried removing a kext

rm -Rf then kext but instead I rm -Rf /sbin/mount -uw / then after this i couldn't boot no more, dont know what i was thinking, thinking one thing and typing another lol and I didn't know how to copy that folder back so had to do a full reinstall of everything :(

I know I should only use -R but i hate silly messages, so i tend to force it as well :P

Hey all,

I'm hoping someone out there can help me test something.

I was going to do some 2-drive internal testing, but I don't have the secondary cable needed to connect the 2nd drive internally. So what I need is someone to do a somewhat simple test who does have the 2 drive capability:

- Remove the primary drive that has working Windows 7 on it but not Chameleon or OS X. In other words, a Windows 7 only drive.

- Put in a different drive as primary, either with Chameleon and OS X on it, or install them.

- Then put the Windows 7 drive in as the secondary drive.

- On boot, does Chameleon now see both OS X and Windows 7? Are you able to boot Windows 7?

- If not, are you able to make it work this way?

I'm thinking it will, but may need a little tweaking here and there to get it working. I do plan on getting the cable kit, but I would not be able to receive it in time before the release of v2.00, so hoping someone out there CAN test this so I can quickly at that procedure to the guides. Thanks!

Hey Mammoth,

I've had this setup since your V1 Guide. My primary drive with Win 7 was removed and swapped for my secondary on which I installed OSX.

Now OSX is my primary drive and chameleon boots on it, to show my my boot options:

Drive 1 : OSX, Ubuntu Linux

Drive 2 : Win 7, Recovery Partition, Win 7 OS

All works properly with me being able to boot whichever I need by selecting it in chameleon.

Thanks for your hard work as always.

Sammity

v2.00 UPDATE

I just wanted to take a quick moment to let everyone know I AM working on v2.00 (and have been).

Things are going VERY WELL once again. I am testing "the Dickens" out of every aspect of the guides and procedures (looking for more bugs, and I hope I don't find any), and improving sections of the guides as I go for maximum clarity and correctness.

I will NOT once again give you false hopes, only to let you all down; so I WON'T be projecting a release date. As I've said once before, I will announce it's ready, when it's actually ready.

I will say, it shouldn't be much longer though.

Hi

Can anyone explain my partition on my primary disk

1:system and primary partition ?? see image

Peter,

Standard HP laptop build, recovery partition, so you can re-install without media, and tools for BIOS upgrades and some EFI support. I delete both, personally as I have media, and I have never had to use the tools volume, and I work for an HP reseller, so change my laptop every few months. In fairness I also always build from scratch, so I avoid all the bloatware all laptops seem to come with these days.

The System partition is the Windows 7 Boot partition, and you cannot install service packs (currently SP1) and some patches and security updates without it, and obviously boot Windows 7 without an alternative bootloader, i.e. Chameleon.

If you have the luxury of two hard disk's, then install Chameleon, OS X, Ubuntu, etc. on one and leave Windows 7 on the other with it's System partition intact, even if you are booting Windows 7 from Chameleon on the second hard disk.

Hope this helps,

Cheers, MSoK.

I talk about the Windows 7 SYSTEM partition in the v2.00 Guides. Windows 7 runs fine without it, but I am not able to update to SP1 without it.

I'm talking about the partition that is 199MB the other I know what that is :D

So when V2 is released, is it possible to NOT swap the both drives? and install OSX on the secondary drive?

And should I save my DSDT from windows? and what is the best way to do this?

BR

Peter

I Am finish with all installation of my SW on my new machine, doing a backup using W7 backup function now, so I'm safe

Also my W7 have now SP1 :P
