maleorderbride
Thanks for your patience and excellent response. One question about the fresh installs, can I install OVER my current install (keeping my docs and apps), or do I have to wipe the drive clean? Also, could I use everything in your package without a fresh install and just adding in my Boot.plist edits? I'm not sure how the Graphics stuff plays into it, I have GraphicsEnabler set to yes in my current one along with the device-properties string. I also have my stuff backed up to Time Machine, if I wipe out the disk and install fresh, can I restore most of the stuff with Time Machine (settings etc would be nice to keep as well) Thanks again, much appreciated. I am afraid that doing an install on top of your old one might preserve anything that is 3rd party and messing up the drivers in S/L/E. You can do a fresh destructive install, then use Migration Assistant on your TM backup. However, make sure that you only import your user account, like docs, music, pics, etc. We do not want any system files from the old install. You should be able to do Settings as well, but not 100% positive. Definitely do not do Applications as that can bring kexts with it. The whole process doesn't take long, so if it still has problems then bite the bullet and manually save your files and do a reformat install without using TM. Yes, you can use everything in my Extra with just the your Boot.plist edits. Don't delete anything from my .plist, but do add in the device-properties. If you are unsure about the other settings you can upload your boo.plist for me to take a look at. One handy habit to be in is to always color every single kext you install that is not a vanilla apple kext. That way you never have to guess what is causing the problems in S/L/E. You just go look and see that there are 4 non genuine kexts and delete them all to be back to standard.
heythisisdave
Hi maleorderbride - my last post got lost somehow. Thanks for the help. Here's a copy of my Boot.plist with my device properties string, I have GraphicsEnabler set to yes, should I turn it off in yours? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Kernel</key> <string>mach_kernel</string> <key>Kernel Flags</key> <string>arch=i386</string> <key>Timeout</key> <string>3</string> <key>Theme</key> <string>Default</string> <key>GraphicsEnabler</key> <string>Yes</string> <key>EthernetBuiltIn</key> <string>Yes</string> <key>RestartFix</key> <string>Yes</string> <key>DropSSDT</key> <string>yes</string> <key>device-properties</key> <string>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</string> <key>Graphics Mode</key> <string>1900x1200x32</string> </dict> </plist>
maleorderbride
If you currently use GraphicsEnabler then I would leave it on. Just copy in the device-properties key/string. I see that you have a DropSSDT line as well, but that should definitely not be used with my boot.plist. So, with that one change you should be golden! tdk1007
I figure this is the best place to post this... I'm getting very low scores in geekbench 64-bit. I scored 5470 in my latest test, and am not experiencing fluctuations. Also the computer is reporting that the RAM is 1066 MHz when it should be 1600. Can anyone advise on how to bring this up higher? I'll try the bios settings that were mentioned above and update my results.

Use my files from post #293 or so. Use Chameleon RC5 as I mention in that same post to automatically detect CPU/RAM correctly. dougaa
My motherboard has BIOS FE, and I've tried to duplicate maleorderbride's installation. I'm using his recent Extra folder for BIOS FE, and his AppleHDA kext from message #273 (MOB_Files_X58A_UD3R_rev._2.0.2.zip). With that AppleHDA and some others I've tried, I don't get any audio devices. However, the latest VoodooHDA, 2.7.2, works fine. Any suggestions for how I can get AppleHDA to work? I've heard AppleHDA is better than VoodooHDA?

I'm setting up a new machine, and looking for the best solutions. If the answer is already in this thread, I'll get to it eventually. Also, when you get a chance, could you explain why a modified Chameleon is needed, and provide a pointer to the source for that version? When I use the GUI with that version and a longer wait, the countdown progress bar is very slow and jerky. I'd like to see if I can fix that. The different icons are cool though The RC5 that I use can be found here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=231075 It is the from the normal Chameleon team, but is still a work in progress. The offical RC5 release is probably a few months away. I use it because it provides automatic P/C States without having to make CPU specific DSDT edits. I am sure you can see why it is advantageous to not have to use a different DSDT for every single processor despite them having the same motherboard. I believe the source can be found from links in that thread. I have noticed the jerkiness as well--you can change the timeout to 1 or just remove the GUI. Both of these edits can be made to the Apple.com.Boot.plist. For example: <key>GUI</key> <string>No</string> //this would disable the GUI <key>TimeOut</key> <string>1</string> //this would change the timeout to 1 unit instead of 3. 0=infinite. I use an audio solution that hooks into AppleHDA. Kind of an Enabler+LegacyALC solution, except it is AppleHDA version independent--this it is update proof. The problem is, I don't have headphone jacks working. When I get those working I will release it. Without that, it is just a glorified VoodooHDA with slightly higher default volume. I will probably not ever finish the FE release completely and instead just wait for the next non-beta release from GB. I think my boot time increased with FE slightly, so I see no reason to encourage other people to use it. If someone notices that there is an FF, or whatever Gigabyte will call it, BIOS update they could PM me and I will edit it fully.

I plan to use Chameleon to also boot linux and Windows on the same machine, so I want to use the GUI with a reasonable timeout. Also, since I'm not running just OS X, it seems best to have the latest version of the BIOS. As far as I can tell, the version of FE on the Gigabyte website now, from 12/23, is not a beta version. A full DSDT would be amazing if you could sort that out At the moment im using bios FC and your DSDT with all power saving enabled from an earlier post. My geekbench jumped from 9600 to over 11000, so your work is greatly appreciated! Would love to get it all matched up and up to date. dougaa
I've tried to duplicate the approach maleorderbride followed, but with the latest versions of everything. I consider this a beta version because while it appears to work well, I haven't tested it thoroughly. For now, use it at your own risk. I couldn't have done this without maleorderbride's work to build on, and I hope people will test this and help find bugs. The files should work with any CPU or RAM the motherboard supports, and any graphics card Chameleon supports. As with maleorderbride's files, these file are intended to all be used together. The DSDT file assumes a current build of Chameleon newer than the last release, and also assumes the audio solution being used. The install files attachment has everything need to do an installation. Chameleon is the current trunk build, r698. DSDT.aml is derived from the FE BIOS, with all of d00d's current edits, omitting those not needed for recent versions of Chameleon. The JMicron kext for the eSATA ports is updated to version 0.8, the same as in the latest version of #####. The audio solution uses the same AppleHDA.kext, but uses Tonymac's new AL8xxHDA.kext instead of Legacy889HDA.kext. This is equivalent to using AppleHDA rollback and ALC8xxHDA in #####. This is the only AppleHDA-based solution I found which allowed the front headphone jack to work. Smbios.plist includes a memory speed setting, which for me is 1600. This is cosmetic, and has no effect on performance. The ethernet driver is the new one from Lnx2Mac, which has been reported to have better performance than the RealtekR1000 kext. The support files attachment has Chameleon doc files, and the i386 boot files, for people who install Chameleon manually instead of using the installer. It also has DSDT files for BIOS FE before editing, after editing, and a version without the HDEF audio patch. That may be necessary for some audio solutions. The DSDT dsl files are included. Search for EDIT in the dsl files to see where changes were made. Finally, the latest Intel command line DSDT compiler, iasl, is included. Not all of d00d's patches are for the DSDT. For his complete solution, I suggest reading through post #1 of his thread at http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=196771. D00d keeps post #1 updated with the latest info. The fakesmc patch there has already been included in my files. maleorderbride
I've tried to duplicate the approach maleorderbride followed, but with the latest versions of everything. I consider this a beta version because while it appears to work well, I haven't tested it thoroughly. For now, use it at your own risk. Already have a pair of Gigabyte P67 motherboards rearing to go!

Nice work I have just one doubt whether your setup is going to work 64bit too, I saw you are forcing 32bit with <string>i386</string> and was wandering why? dougaa
Nice work I have just one doubt whether your setup is going to work 64bit too, I saw you are forcing 32bit with <string>i386</string> and was wandering why? I can't try it for a couple days, but I don't know of any reason why 64-bit mode won't work. I set it to 32-bit for the same reason Apple does by default. 32-bit has greater compatibility, and and doesn't affect the performance of 64-bit apps. Activity Monitor will still show apps running in 64-bit mode if they're able to. In my experience, the 64-bit Geekbenchmark is identical whether the kernel is running in 32 or 64-bit mode.
