Thank god jfoo! I've read this thread at least 15 times and installed using two different methods with partial success in both. However I was trying to do all this at work(only time I had time) and I kept over looking things like the 10.6.4 audio fix post that nullspot made AND completely forgot about the jmicronSATA.kext to get my blu-ray drive working.

 

Thank you for putting it all together it works beautifully! and thanks to everyone else for their contributions.

 

Just one small typo I saw, you might consider linking directly to jacoverse's post #79 instead of just linking to the thread page.

he used the EX58-UD5 configuration in the kakewalk installer per Nullspots suggestion/findings:

 

First off, the Kakewalk installer fails to properly install the "boot" file when creating the modded OSX install USB drive (when selecting the GA-X58A-UD3R from the list). I finally got a working boot installer by picking the Gigabyte EX58-UD5 from the list instead. That allowed me to boot and install 10.6 just fine, but of course the config isn't quite right for the UD3R (no network, no audio, who knows what else).

 

So I then ran the KakewalkBoot installer (found on the puru.se blog page) http://cl.ly/k7d/content - which is designed to update existing Kakewalk OSX installations. This time I selected the X58A-UD3R option, and rebooted. All good (though still no built-in ethernet or audio).

Did you have to go back and use kakeboot with the X58A-UD3R option in your install or just leave the configuration for the EX58-UD5 board? What I'm wondering is if that is a needles step in the overall install process now?

I don't know about kakewalk, but if you are using [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]/[url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] method, then yes, only 4GB during installation. Once you are done with everything, you can go back to 6GB, thats what I just did. Everything is working PERFECT, just no sleep.

Just wanted to thank everyone in here in a big way for all your contributions. I just used this thread to set up my first ever Hackintosh, and everything -- from sleep to digital audio to 1000Mbit networking to a PCI FireWire 800 card to the Gigabyte SATA headers -- is working absolutely flawlessly. To sum up, I'll recap the system and outline the steps I took to get here.

 

Motherboard: X58A-UD3R v. 2.0

CPU: i7-930

RAM: 12 GB (6 x Corsair DDR3-1333 spec'd for 7-7-7-24)

Video card: XFX ATI HD 4870, 1 GB (non-reference)

Displays: 1 x Dell 2007FP (1600x1200), 1 x 23" ACD (1920x1200)

Boot drive: Corsair Nova 128 GB SATA 3 Gb/s SSD, connected to SATA2_0

Other internal drives: 4 x 7200 rpm, various sizes and makers, connected to SATA2_2, 3, 4, 5

Optical drive: Samsung SH-S222L (IDE DVD/CD burner)

Other: TI-based Syba FireWire 800 PCI card

Case: Lian Li PC-A71F

 

Installation

 

0. Disconnect all disks except SSD and take out all but 4GB RAM (2GB DIMMs in slots 1 and 3).

 

1. Initial Boot - For some reason this system would hang on the spinny Apple screen when attempting to boot from the retail SL DVD from [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]. Kakewalk solved the problem. So I initially booted and installed 10.6.0 from Kakewalk.

 

** Of note: I noticed at this point that my 4870 and IDE DVD/CD drive were fully working without any additional effort. No sound or networking yet, obviously.

 

2. Reboot into my 10.6.0 install from Kakewalk, combo update to 10.6.4. Note that I had to have the combo update burned to DVD as I had no networking yet.

 

3. Reboot into my 10.6.4 install using Kakewalk.

 

4. Copy nullspot's DSDT file to the Desktop (see Post 33).

 

4. Back up the original /S/L/E/AppleHDA.kext, and copy nullspot's modified AppleHDA.kext (see Post 38) into /S/L/E.

 

5. Run [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] 2.1.1, using the following options:

 

  • UserDSDT
  • System Utilities (both items)
  • Advanced Options: Kexts:


  • IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector

  • JMicron36xATA

  • JMicron36xeSATA (my Gigabyte SATA headers are connected to external ports)


  • Mac Pro i7 smbios.plist
  • OSX Software: Kext Utility

 

6. Copy the following items into /E/E:

 

  • nullspot's modified FakeSMC.kext (see Post 33)
  • nullspot's legacy889HDA.kext (see Post 38)
  • jacoverse's modified IONetworkingFamily.kext (Realtec_8111d_3264.zip) (see Post 79)

 

7. Modify /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist as instructed by nullspot (see Post 33).

 

8. Run KextUtility (or repair permissions and rebuild kext cache).

 

9. Shut down the machine, reconnect extra hard disks, and reinstall RAM.

 

10. Boot straight from BIOS and enjoy networking, sound, Software Update, dual displays, excellent 3D performance, and a 9506 32-bit GeekBench score (still only running at 2.93 GHz, not sure of my cooling yet).

kakewalk - I had all 12 GB of my memory installed when I tried it with kakewalk.

Sorry if this is a noob question, but i have searched and not gotten a clear answer.

 

After building a GA-X58A-UD3R r2.0 setup with a SATA III drive connected to one of the SATA II ports, can i move that drive to the Jmicron controlled SATA III ports, and be able to:

 

1. boot from that drive, and

2. get SATA III performance?

 

Obviously i would have the Jmicron driver installed from [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] 2.1.

Also, I've had a bit more time to tweak, and I can confirm a few things that are true of my setup:

 

a) With stock Intel cooling in this Lian Li case I can get to 160x21 (3.36 GHz) at 1.20 V (CPU) stably and without overheating under load (8 x openssl speed), with memory overclocked to 10x (1600). My GeekBench score at these settings was 10980. Subjectively, the machine feels faster than any other Mac I've ever used, including older Mac Pros, between the SSD and the overclock.

 

b ) In 32-bit SL I could use 1.175 V, but I got KPs in 64-bit SL at that voltage. :) It makes 2-3 C difference in CPU temps. I'd rather be running 64-bit than have a 2-3 C cooler CPU.

 

c) SL doesn't mind memory overclocking, but gets persnickety real fast if you try to speed up memory timings.

 

d) After several hours of intense use, including many restarts, everything is still flawless.

I'm opening this topic to help other owners of the 2.0 revision GA-X58A-UD3R, who, like me, are probably frustrated with all the confusion over compatibility, DSDT, audio, and network issues that are *not* addressed in the threads about the 1.0 revision GA-X58A-UD3R.

 

This 2.0 revision has a slightly different chipset than the 1.0 version, and it's enough to cause problems with most existing GA-X58A-UD3R solutions.

 

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to nullspot and others for your very hard work and contributions which have left me far less confused having just upgraded to to an i7-930 and a GA X58A UD3R (rev2) from a MSI GD80.

 

So many issues originally since before I came across this interesting thread.

 

Initially I had the orange icon issue and instead of using the kext I modded the DSDT courtesy of mike at the efix-users forum.

 

Make SATA drives be recognized as built-in

This allows you to remove IOACHIBlockStorageInjector.kext!

 

TIP: Search for "Device (PRIM)" and then scroll up just a bit. You should see the code "FAS0, FAS1" etc. just above that. Right after the closing curly brace, copy and paste in the code in bold:

and carried out all the edits in respect of USB naming, HDEF audio etc and it is all now working very well sound/Sleep and all only issue is I need to use 64bit mode and neither the internal lan port plus a PCI card refuse to connect, fortunately I have an AP Extreme card connected to an adapter and that works fine.

 

The only issue I have is the ethernet connection(s), otherwise it is very stable and I get a geekbench 64bit reading of 10,790, so I am more or less happy but would be pleased to hear of a 64bit fix for the lan issue.

 

Zipped DSDT is attached and I am using in E/E Jmicron36xSATA.kext and Legacy889HDA.kext.

Nullspot,s fakesmc and amended AppleHDA reside in S/L/E.

 

You guys have really helped me, thank you again, and particularly to nullspot for his work and efforts in enlightening many of us.

Have you tried using the modified IONetworkingFamily.kext from reply 79 of this thread? It's working fine for me in 64-bit mode. If you install it and don't get any success after a restart, try moving/deleting all the prefs in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and restart again.

Hi Thanks a lot that worked for me as well. The pay off is the Airport Extreme (Mini PCI in an adapter) does not work, but that is no great loss - I would prefer the wired Ethernet.

Hey everyone,

 

I just built a new computer and am having some trouble installing Snow Leopard. I keep getting the "You need to restart your computer." This happens with Kakewalk (also tried EX58-UD5 and X58A-UD7 Kakewalk versions unsuccessfully) and [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url].

 

The specs are -

 

GA-X58A-UD3R **rev 2.0**

i7 930

Geforce GTX 465

 

 

Any help would be extremely appreciated, and if there's any more info that I can provide please tell me.

 

 

EDIT: I'm stupid and wrote 265, but it's a 465.

Hi All - I just finished my build of a GA-X58A-UD3R **rev 2.0** running a i7-930.

 

The build went fine (thanks for the details in this thread). However, under load (ripping a DVD with Handbrake 64) audio in itunes would pop very badly. I tried the onboard audio and some usb speakers but both had the same bad cracking.

 

Unlike another few posts here, it didn't seem to be the NB or CPU temps. I went to gigabyte's website and found they have a beta BIOS out. I updated to that and the problem has gone away! :blink:

 

The new version is FB11 supposedly released 7/16. I wouldn't have even tried it except the release notes stated "Improved audio efficiency". Hopefully this helps someone else that might experience this problem.
