Windows Vista

I have been using Vista for a few months now just because it has been convenient to use some one else computer.

Even just for my normal Internet usage, I find Vista annoying to use. Yesterday, FireFox was repeating freezing up Vista and it is more of hassle to force an application to quit in Vista than OS X. In fact, even just quiting an applictaion in Vista can be more a hassle than necessary because control-Q does not work (like in Internet Explorer).

Since I built this machine to be a Hackintosh, I can boot OS X on it instead. The only thing stooping my is that this machine shares printers to other Windows machines, so I would have to deal with that issue which may not be worth the hassle.

As a computer user with what could only be considered slightly above-average computer skills, I feel I should point out the absolute pointlessness and irrelevance of the Apple v Microsoft debate to the average user. The truth is that the only thing the vast majority of PC users (I.e. at least 90%) want from their operating systems is the ability to perform basic tasks such as internet browsing, word processing, printing, and to the ability to play their music and DVDs. Most of all, they want to be able to walk into the store and pick up a computer that will work with all the programmes they are used to running (e.g. Microsoft Office), and will be compatible with almost any piece of hardware they pick up off the shelf.

For most people, that operating system is Microsoft Windows. They don't care about Linux, they don't care about Unix, they don't care about BeOS, and they don't care about Mac OS, period. They don't care that *nix operating systems may be more secure. They don't care that they might offer new functionality or a different way of doing things, because for most of people, it just takes time and effort to relearn how to perform simple tasks as basic as finding and opening their files, maximising, minimising and resizing their windows, or altering their programme settings.

They want to be able to buy new software off the shelf, without having to worry about whether it will work on their computer when they bring it home. They want simplicity, and efficiency, and for most people, efficiency is familiarity.

Most people will only ever change or upgrade their OS when they buy a new computer, and even then, only the most tech-savvy users would bother to take the time and effort to relearn how to perform tasks they have been performing under their old os for years just the sake of something new, or for the sake of participating in some pointless power struggle between two large, faceless, money-hungry corporations.

Microsoft Windows is the dominant operating system, because it offers ease of use, compatibility, familiarity and simplicity, and that's not about to change anytime in the foreseeable future.

+1 to this, this is what all of you anti-MS people need to learn, and more importantly it's what all the pro-FOSS kids desperately need to learn or they're going to hit stonewall after stonewall.

Hah, right.

1) If a program stops responding in Vista the app's main window will fade out and you can click X and it will ask you if you want to force close and it will also have the second option to send an error report.

2) You can use Alt+F4 to close any app and Ctrl+W works for some others too like FF if you have no extra tabs open. Oh, and if you're going to whinge about Windows short-cuts, apparently Apple ones are much worse or at least have that stigma attached to them whereas Windows doesn't, not even Linux does.

Sorry Skippy, that was not working, I had to go into process control.

Thanks, but Apple sets the standard with keyboard short cuts (like paste is "v", cut is "x"), and Microsoft follows (err... tries to follow). As typical, Microsoft is a bad copy of the real thing.

Let's just ignore Apple's 'revolutionary' time machine function that Windows ME had 7 years ago. Oh, and the transluceny of windows, that got added to Leopard *after* Vista was released.

I suspect that PC users (Mac & Windows) can't wrap their heads around the fact that are only so many ways to do things, and there are bound to be similarities. We like to call it standardization.

And yes, Firefox acts bizarre in Vista. I have no idea why, though. Of course Safari acts strangely, too. Ironically, Netscape 9 and Flock run flawlessly.

I haven't tried Time Machine yet, but I hope it isn't anything like MS System Restore, which is total {censored} and has never helped me in difficult situations.

Heck, even SUSE System Repair is better than MS System Restore, it has saved my skin several times.

Umm...There was translecency in Tiger.

To be fair to MS, they had their "Spotlight" in the Longhorn beta before Tiger was released. In fact, I remember when Vista came out, and everyone was crying that they stole from Tiger, a beta tester went through all the non-public beta and alpha versions, and listed the build numbers where the things that made their way into Vista started. Many of them pre-dated Tiger, but the release of Vista was slowed and held back so much, that by the time it made its way out, many of the technologies had been developed and released through Mac and Linux and third party apps.

It's not PC [Mac+Win] users, it's simply Mac users. Seriously, do you ever see Windows users pro actively bashing Apple or at least anywhere near on the scale the Apple shills do? Also, it doesn't help that Apple's main marketing strategy seems to be insulting their competitors or trying to make them look bad and this isn't confined to Microsoft, they've done it to Intel and others.

But yeah, you're right.

What I want to know is why there are Microsoft fanboys on an Apple-dedicated forum. I expect the bull-{censored} about Mac OS being the best thing since sliced bread here, but not this.

Actually, more to the point, what I want to know is why so many people are trapped in their little 'one OS to rule them all and in the darkness bind them' paradigm at all. Linux, Mac OS and Vista all have points which make them better than the others in some way, I'm just saying that I don't see the real benefits of Vista over XP in that sense, and I don't think you can argue that it's not having teething problems. It's not going to stop me using Microsoft OSes; I still use XP, and I'll probably end up using Vista once SP1 rolls around. I just don't like being forced into something that I see only disadvantages to. I use Linux and I use Mac OS too. There are different tasks that are suited to different OSes running on different hardware...

And as for the monopolies you're all crying about, Microsoft has a monopoly over the home computer market, Apple has a monopoly over the 'creative' computer field, and Linux has a monopoly over the server market. Boo hoo.

do you ever see Windows users pro actively bashing Apple

Yes. All over the place. Try mentioning the word 'Mac' on most computer hardware enthusiast forums and see what happens. For that matter, you've done it yourself, on this forum. It happens just as much in both directions. It seems nobody on the internet can hold a conversation like a mature adult.

If I remember correctly, this is a forum dedicated to running OS X on PC machines. I'm truly surprised at the amount of Mac users that populate this site.

I know that, you know that, but most people here who want to run OS X are fans of the OS, or at least don't dislike it...

InsanelyMac is a community for those interested in the very latest news about Apple's Macintosh computers and OS X.

Liars! Liars!

Point well taken, but mine is that for the intended audience of this forum, we should expect people currently using PC hardware, and therefore the majority of them running some form of Windows, and a few Linux users. I can't imagine all of them completely HATE their Windows OS, else they would've had a Mac in the first place. It's mostly Mac users from the beginning that bash MS. I think most users that do a lot of work with software have learned that there are pros to both, and have accepted that. It seems futile to decry OSs, because they do all have pros and cons.

I have always wondered about that (and actually I have been less kind, because I have called them "MS shills", as its clear that their interest in OS X is zero).

There have been real OS Wars here, and I have been insulted several times by MS fanboys (as you call them).

But now I have accepted it as part of life, LOL.

In some ways I'm sad that this forum is headed in such an 'Apple oriented' direction, but I guess that is understandable. I use OS X daily, and can relate to many things on this forum. Still, it seems like over time there has been less and less focus on Linux and Windows :)

I kinda miss Vista every once and a while.

I hear you man, one day I got so fed up with the RAM usage and boot times I switched back to XP. Now I regret that decision. I am getting a DX10 card soon (either NVIDIA 8800GT or ATI HD3800), so I will have to switch sometime this month. But I'm actually happy about going back to Vista, as SP1 will add increased performance (by a ton! especially with file managing) and stability.

Right, I stopped using Safari in Vista because it had keyboard problems and switched to Firefox.

I only tried Safari in Windows once. I ran it on Vista. Vista was on a Virtual Machine.

Can't really remember it...

No. At the end of the day it's Windows NT 6. Stolen Leopard features? Did you know it was Microsoft who first came out with Desktop Search?

I actually put that up a few posts earlier.

I wish I had the link to this...

There was a guy who put together all the features that people think Vista stole, and included the build number they were released on, the date that build went out to MS testers, and the date that the feature was put out in OS X. You would be surprised....
