Just be sure you DON'T load graphicsenabler during setup.

Otherwise it will hang right before loading loginwindow because it can't find nvdagf100.kext on the installation disc.

Without graphicsenabler in com.apple.Boot.plist it will do the setup in low res.

After finishing installation you can go on with installing right kexts to get it working.

Good luck.

I gave up - I put the 9800GTX+ back in my lifehacker build, reinstalled OSX SL completely, so right now I am sitting with a 100% fresh install.

At the current moment I do not have ANY bootloader installed to my root of the drive, I am still booting with the USB key.

Any suggestions on where to begin now that SL is freshly installed? Currently upgrading to 10.6.4 - then I guess I would install the chameleon on OP? What would I do for the Extras folder on my thumbdrive? Copy it over when I have the new bootloader installed to my harddrive?

Sorry if these are n00b questions, but I am going to be getting rid of the 9800GTX and giving it to a friend, so I want to make sure I get everything installed smoothly because I couldn't get SL installed without taking out the GTX470 and replacing it with the old card.

Anyways, all/any help is immensely appreciated!

For People With Lifehacker Snow Leopard Build

I opted for the GTX470 but I am sure following these steps will put you on the same page as me:

Screen%20shot%202010-09-17%20at%203.25.09%20PM.png

Current Screenshot, Running in full resolution 1920x1080

 1. Alright, well first - I majorly FUBAR'd my hackie, so I had to take out my card, put in the old 9800GTX+ and reinstall Snow Leopard via the USB thumbdrive/Stellarola's v3 installer package.
 2. After the installation was complete, I immediately updated my computer to run 10.6.4 and restarted (still booting from thumbdrive)
 3. After restarting and on 10.6.4 I went and downloaded this file - which is the Chameleon RC5 Installer Package, and installed this to the root of my drive (Make sure to go to 'Customize' and what I checked was 'Themes' and also made sure 'GraphicsEnabler' was checked, which will then make an 'Extras' folder in the root of your drive)- I DID NOT install the v3 installer from Stellarola to my harddrive. After the installation completes, it will log you out - Restart the computer yet again, and boot via your thumbdrive...
 4. After Chameleon RC5 was installed I opened up the Extra folder on my Harddrive and on my Thumbdrive and then deleted everything that Chameleon RC5 put in its Extra folder, and then dragging over the Extras from the thumbdrive onto my harddrive's Extras folder.
 5. Now I removed the thumbdrive, set the BIOS to boot from the HDD first, and sure enough the computer fires up. I then ran Software Update again and downloaded the Graphics Driver Update that it found for me.

Now everything is working as WELL as it can, from my understanding - it's not perfect yet, but for those who have the same build as me, maybe this will help you out a little bit. I went ahead and uploaded my 'Extra' folder which can be found here because I now have a question for someone well versed in hackintosh magic:

Question: Everything seems to be working the best it can now, however when I am seeing Chameleon boot up, it isn't at the full resolution and was wondering what could be done to fix this - I didn't use the bootloader folder in the fermi package from the OP because all the terminal jargon was confusing me and I didn't know if that was why my bootloader is so small on my screen. I would like it to be 1920x1080 and then I will officially be a happy camper.

Anyways, hope my information happens to help someone and save them several hours of pain, frustration, tears and consumption of ho-ho's and ice cream.

@CMF, take GTX 480M off the list. It's not supported. You are misleading people. The Clevo D900F is the only computer with this mobile version graphics card. Have you even tested the fix on this computer yourself? I highly doubt it. If your fix does not work on the Clevo, it does not work - Period.

really ?

there's even a notebook from Schenker out there, that sports 2x the GTX480M chip in SLI ini it (and you're obviously free to buy the other model with only one of 'em).

maybe recheck your sources ? :(

there's atleast 3 different notebooks that aren't the Clevo barebone and that have a GTX480M in it that i can currently think of ... so your assumption that the Clevo D900F is the only model with that graphics adapter is not exactly correct ;-)

If you're talking about the Schenker XMG U700, it is a Clevo X7200 barebone. I purposely left it out as it has literally been out on the market for a couple of days. Long after CMF supposedly tested the card. You just reinforced my point. Schenker's just a European reseller of Clevo computers as are Sager, Eurocom and AVA Direct in North America. Eurocom also offers dual GTX 480M and 4 hard drives, but it's components are Clevo.

Hello Everyone, thanks for all the info on the GTX 480 it was really helpful my card is now recognized and I am running 1920x1080 res, however I did run into some problems. First of all after installing the drivers, I can no longer boot normally , I always have to choose the -x (safe mode) in order to be able to see something on the screen, If I bot in some other way the system does boot, a blue screen appeared and it just doesn't do anything.

Also another problem I ran into was after installing the drivers, I do not have internet anymore :/ Before installing the kexts I had internet working normally. I am connected to the internet through and Ethernet cable, not WiFi.

Can someone please help me with this issues, that would be great :unsure:

aqua-mac,

I just read that you have 3 GTX480 running under OSX. I can't get them to work, so I just wanted to ask what is necessary to get them running. I kinda managed to get one of them running (when I take the others out), but I get artifacts over the whole screen (I can see the mouse-pointer though). Do I have to remove the SLI bridge?

The cards are EVGA GTX480's, VenID 0x10de, DevID 0x06c0

The Device Paths are as follows:

PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x3,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0) //first card

PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x5,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0) //second card

PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x7,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0) //third card

(Of course help from others is welcome too) :rolleyes:

Thanks in advance,

I know i'm not aqua-mac but i have learned his awesome ways ;), and im sure he wont mind me lessing his work load. Here is a Tri-Sli GTX 480 gfx string, and a link to the driver installer he has made(make sure you have 10.6.4 installed). I didn't have any trouble with gtx 470 in sli so i wouldn't think that you have to remove the sli bridge. Heck i'm using monitors on both cards.

Driver: aqua-mac's Installer

GFX String: tri_sli_gtx_480.zip

CUDA is not working for me and also a few others whose looking for Mercury Playback using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. Even though you can hack CS5 to recognize gtx480, CUDA isnt recognized. Here is the result. Latest CUDA driver is installed btw.

Vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation

Renderer string: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 OpenGL Engine

Version string: 2.1 NVIDIA-1.6.18

OpenGL version as determined by Extensionator...

OpenGL Version 2.0

Supports shaders!

Supports BGRA -> BGRA Shader

Supports VUYA Shader -> BGRA

Supports UYVY/YUYV ->BGRA Shader

Supports YUV 4:2:0 -> BGRA Shader

Testing for CUDA support...

Didn't find any devices that support CUDA.

Completed shader test!

Internal return value: 7

EDIT: Halfway there, booted into GUI. The cards even show up in System Profiler, but I'm still locked into 1024x768... Help?

Still not working, it hangs at the infamous "ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::start - waitForService(resourceMatching(AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement) timed out" message, which indicates that the window server is not loading - Caps Lock or Num Lock don't work either.

Ok, let's resume all of this to be clear on everything.

GTX 460 doesn't work.

GTX 470 works with problems : no OpenCL, no CUDA, and most of all : Vsync issue (in the middle of the screen).

So for now, just don't buy Fermi cards, their support is very experimental and you'll be very disapointed.

If you really have to buy a high-end graphic card for professional applications, just go for a GTX 260 or GTX 285.

Now for me people like me who bought GTX 4xx just keep the card and wait, they are not less awesome GPUs and support will arrive soon with Quadro Fermi upgrades for Mac Pro (at least you bet on the wright horse !).

PM!

With another machine I've tried 465 GTX - blank screen again (((

8800 Ultra works perfectly with this drivers (((

Doesn't the 465 need to be nvflashed into a 470 before it will work? I could be wrong *now* but I'm certain that for a select few that was the case shortly after this thread began..

and more time to figure out how to cool these things *quietly*!!!

and more time to figure out how to cool these things *quietly*!!!

Noise is curently the last of my concerns (there are easy water-cooling solution these days) My GTX 470 gets noisy only in full load with a PC game.

The real matter as i said is CUDA / OpenCL and Vsync !

I didn't discount that. I stated I have time to address quieter cooling (while I wait for better driver support).

Which 470? Even at idle (30% fan speed) my 470 is louder than my entire system (mostly Corsair). I agree re: water.. I'm prob going to drop a water block on mine as I don't want to loose another 2-slots to a custom/air solution.. However, I don't like the fact that I need to spend more on cooling than I did on the card to bring dB down to reasonable level.

Thermal [cooling/noise/etc] is the single most common complaint about the Fermi followed by power consumption. A number of the newer cards incorporate better/proprietary cooling than the early reference models. Great example being ASUS DirectCU series however I think they are only available on the newer GF104.. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX...rozr_II/28.html

IMHO "Quiet" is my Mac Pro at idle or in a game and my 470 alone is *far* noisier in both cases.

Since the new Quadro 4000/5000/6000 base on the Fermi-technology, is there a chance to get an working CUDA enabled driver for the gtx 470/480 GPUS from the existing MacOs drivers of the Quadros?

I would try to do this work if I had any programming skills...

Why don't you just settle for a GTX285 it's not like that card is a slouch or lacking compared to the benches.

Your missing out if your waiting for Fermi to work on a GTX 470 with OSX at this time, CUDA works fine with a GTX285.

May I take a look at somebody's com.apple.Boot.plist who got their GTX 480 working with this fix?

And only one machine with 480 GTX works (magic? if i did all equally for other two comp. boxes)

Here boot plist from working fermi below:

$ cat /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>Kernel</key>

<string>mach_kernel</string>

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>5</string>

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

<string></string>

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>

<string>y</string>

<key>PciRoot</key>

<string>0</string>

</dict>

</plist>

P.S. All SL installations was with boot-123/##### iso + Original 10.6.3 CD + 10.6.4 Combo Update + Software Update and this solution at the end. There is no left injectors and blah-blah-blah. In three cases I've got blank screen. With one box i played with EFI strings and after removing strings - one Fermi unexpectedly start working with this fix drivers. And other boxes still has blank screen with this steps as well. Magic...

P.P.S. And I have only three third party drivers into systems: FakeSMS, Audio and Ethernet kexts.

Videos: ASUS 480 GTX, Palit 480 GTX and 465 GTX.

Mobos: ASUS P5E WS PRO, P5K, P5E with DSDT fixes from here:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=199816

All based on x38 chipset - Maybe the problem with this? )))

Your missing out if your waiting for fermi to work, CUDA works fine with a GTX285.

Being practical is what comes to mind.

The only alternative is if you run Windows as a rendering box or Linux. Look up running quad CUDA set up should give you supercomputer teraflops of power.

The question you might want to think of whats the slowest part? I bet its your storage so before saying something slow work on ram drives, or PCI-E SSD array's with real controller cards not onboard RAID. Informative site.... lol Woz Man go figure http://www.fusionio.com/steve-wozniak/"

Yes, I know the GTX 285. Yes, I´m thinking to buy one of these two cards. Even before your and Gringo Vermelho´s really nice reply. And no.I´m not stupid, even if my english isn´t perfect. I asked this question in a thread called fermi GTX 480/470 - it works - not which GPU should I buy, perhaps to show a chance to get a working driver for this graphic cards.

Why I want the 470 over the 285? Since the latest Update it´s certificated for Premiere CS5, so I´m sure it works with CS5, and it is said to be really fast with Premiere and CUDA, at about the same costs of a 285.

Thanks for your polite answers!
