I think the sluggish GUI is because of the enabled "Overscan" option under Display Prefs (Gigabyte GTX 460, 1920x1080 60fps). If i uncheck, the GUI/Dashboard gets liquid fast. I get the same slugginess/liquidness if I replace the 460 with a simple 9400GT.

@cmf: Thanks for the patch, just committed into the trunk as r651 :thumbsup_anim:

Where is this option? I cannot locate it in Displays Pref....

@CMF

I am trying to help a guy with his new GTX-580 over on the Tonymac forum. He is getting the following error on boot:

bad display config block signature (0xff45dfff)
ERROR: nVidia ROM Patching Failed!

So far he has gotten the driver installed on 10.6.5 and tried both your boot and RC5 but using either results in booting to Low Graphics mode.

Any thoughts? I have not seen that error so I don't know what to suggest at this point.

rabbit.

ref: http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=...60&start=10

error seems to be dcb related. however, i have no idea what this means.

well, definitively some display connector stuff, but i really don't know anything about it, so sorry :/

you should add a bug report here: http://forge.voodooprojects.org/p/chameleon/issues/

Tried everything and it's still the same. I'm now considering one of these options :

1. Re-install OS X using the same method as my other rig with the Zotac GTX 460 (that doesn't have freezing problem)

or

2. Replace the Gigabyte GTX 460 with my spare Sapphire Vapor-X 5770

:D

Ok but let us all know the outcome!

Okay, preliminary findings :

Keeping the CPU and GPU a little busy at all times seem to prevent the system from freezing.

I tested with VLC looping a muted Full HD music video in the background while listening to iTunes and surfing the web.

System has been stable for hours (so far).

Hopefully a Pro will come to our help as I'm not into programming or editing kexts / dsdts ...

Hi ..

Can i activate QE/CI/OpenCL/Full Res on Mobile GT420m cards using this method ?

Has anyone tried this ?

Yeah u may give it a try since its ID is found in the latest Chameleon release  (local language: (be emtehanesh miarze!!!!))

You mean just using GraphicsEnable=Yes will do the stuff ? There's no need for additional Extensions ?

(Local Language => mibinam barobache irani ham too insanelymac fa'alan  )

Well, according to this thread:

1- Install Nvidia Fermi Official Drivers for mac

2- Install Latest Chameleon RC5

3- GE=Y in boot.plist

4- for solving performance issues u should edit AppleGraphicPowerManagement if ur system is something other than MacPro3,1.

In my case, no crash or kernel panic about 10 hours with running glxgears background.

This seems to be effective.

Strange work-a-round though. I also just had a kp after 4 hours of just normal use.

What the hell is it the 4XX itself or the Bl##dy driver!!!

concerning stability: 10d uptime ... w/o any weird workarounds and with normal usage + some gaming and opengl testing.

mustn't necessarily be the graphics driver. might also be a weak psu or a broken system.

edit: oh, and 10J537/10.6.6 beta still doesn't contain a nvdagf100hal.kext and the opencl framework wasn't updated (still the one from august) ...

I know you could be right but my system is totally stable in win 7 gaming and everything, plus it only seems to freeze or kp in snow leopard when doing non cpu intensive things like browsing the net like a few others on here have stated!!

Could a psu bring os x on the internet to its knees sooner than win 7+fully stressed!!

Edit..plus i have a totally stable system with my 9800gtx+

how to make a looping muted video in the background without sacrificing too much cpu, memory and graphics usage. I mean, the minimum usage I could get as to not suffer my applications like iMovie, aperture. thanks!

It's the same. I want to exhaust all possibilities before surrendering to using a 5770 gfx card (as its performance is lacklustre on 1920x1200).

I did try to re-install OS X using a GT 240 (just like my other non-freezing DFI P55 + Zotac GTX 460 rig) and then when everything is up, replace it to the GTX 460 + install Fermi driver. No go as it still freezes on this Gigabyte H55M-S2 + Gigabyte GTX 460 rig.

The video looping in the background does work for me. The video clip needs to be of decent resolution ... enough to tax the GPU a little. If it doesn't work for you then maybe you need to use one with higher resolution to increase the GPU load.

Anyway, I may try to remove 'AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext' and see what happens ... :hysterical:

This is so annoying i am thinking of sticking my 9800gtx+ back in yet again so i can get back to logic 9. i mean i only wanted the 460 for a bit more grunt in windows for the odd bit of gaming but it seems to be more trouble than its worth at the moment!!!

But i will keep the card and hopefully someone will come up with a solution to help us lot out..

I started using Firefox instead of Safari and no more KP's. Give it a shot and post your results.

I am using an EVGA GTS 450.

I've been on Firefox all along. Random freezing can happen on Firefox, Finder, Activity Monitor, iTunes etc. ... basically anywhere as long as Fermi is idling.

Sidetrack : Never used Safari as it is too alien to me and most importantly, I can't port over all my thousands of bookmarks correctly into it (from Firefox).

Yup, this is 1 irritating problem that has to be sorted out sooner rather than later ... esp. now that I enjoy web surfing on OS X more than Win 7.

Okay, that doesn't work. Goes into the OS as per normal even without that kext but the random freeze still occurs if no video clip is looping in the background.

... back to the drawing board :)

Having an odd issue here: What happens is when I flash my 470s as 465s, OS X recognizes both gpus in sys profiler and System Preferences, but when I run my 470s with 470 BIOSes only one is recognized and the other is labeled "Display" with no functionality at all, does OS X work better with two 465s as opposed to 470s? I mean it's a bit weird. I'm using dual gfx EFI strings to get my cards working, no Graphics Enabler (It causes reboot loop, but EFI doesn't). I uploaded a pic of what I get with dual EFI strings and 470s.

Update: Used wrong display path :) works just fine updated screenshot
