Making my first PC...

Hiya guys. Basically I'm making my first PC with the aid of a friend... Its about time I upgraded from this old 400mhz G4 :happymac:

I've got together my list of parts which we put together specifically to work with OS X (as well as XP on a separate HDD). My friend had a list of compatible hardware which we followed, but i thought I'd run it past some experts, because to be brutally honest... I haven't got a clue what i'm doing  but my friend does... I hope!

Okay anyways the parts are as follows:

Motherboard - Asus A8N5X AMD Skt939 nForce 4 2000MTS PCI-E SATA RAID Giga LAN +8ch.audio ATX

CPU - AMD (Venice) Athlon 64Bit 3200+ Socket 939pin 512k L2cache

Graphics Card - Sapphire Radeon X850 XT 256M GDDR3 PCI-E VGA / TVO / DVI-I

Ethernet Card - D-Link DFE-538TX NWay 32 Bit PCI Bus Master Adapter with WOL

DVD Writer - LG GSA-4167BA 16x DVD±RW/RAM Dual Layer Internal IDE

HDD's - 2 x Maxtor 6L160P0 Diamondmax 10 160GB 7200RPM ATA/133 8MB Cache

RAM - Kingston 1GB 400MHz DDR PC3200 DIMM 3-3-3

I've tryed to make it as easy as possible for you to look at. I've also already ordered the Mobo (so I sure hope its compatible!) but all the other parts will be ordered once I know that this setup will definitely work.

Thanks in advance, Ash

Arghhhhhh why not =( Whats the main points wrong with it... Would I be best off starting over?

My goal was to have the 2 hard drives, 1 for XP... Purely for gaming really... And the other with osx for everything else since its just so much better!

Will it work with osx at all??

If you're looking for a really compatible OS X machine, you're better off with an Intel processor to start with. Next, you're better off with an Intel based chipset/board (I currently use an Intel 915GEV with a Pentium 630). You're also better off with on-board graphics, like those on my board. Third party graphics cards need careful research to ensure they will actually work with Apple's supplied drivers. I assume that you've researched your LAN card to ensure compatibility? HDDs make no odds, although IDE will nearly always work, SATA is less likely to be compatible (more research needed!). RAM should make no odds at all so long as the motherboard board works with OSX - I never buy anything other than the cheapest I can lay my hands on and I've yet to have a RAM related problem. The best DVD drives for compatibility in my experience are from Pioneer. Others can cause all sorts of issues, including an inability to even install OSX.

Here is what I do, I have a7600GT along with GMA950 onboard. When I feel like gaming I go to bios and set the graphics to pci-e and plug the monitor into dvi out of the 7600GT to boot into windows, when I want to boot OSX I change it back to o/b in bios and use GMA's vga out. Not all 945G motherboards are non-overclocking boards like Intel boards so you might want to reconsider if you want to buy an Intel brand motherboard if you are into overclocking. Make sure you have a very good aftermarket cooler as the Pentium D (which you should get as it is much better and only slightly more expensive than the Pentium 4) runs pretty hot. My 930 is 59C@load whic is quite hot considering I have decent aftermarket cooling.

Hmmm.

1. Stay away from AMD hackintoshes. They are always harder to get to work.

2. The only non Intel GPU that works well is the x1600 (I hear).

3. Its very hard to perfectly get a system for hackintoshing. I have the Dell on the front page (XPS 200) and it took me two days to get it to work.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess i'll go ahead and order my parts anyway and try and get osx to work on it but if it doesn't then so be it! My first and foremost goal is to get a nice PC up and running but to be able to boot up into osx would be really nice...

I guess I can always put together myself a serperate machine built to propper hackintosh specs a bit later on since this ones set me back a fair bit as it is!

Well... What can I say... :pirate2:

Built my new PC with the above specs and managed to get osx86 running perfectly. Onboard sound works fine and my PCI LAN card works perfect.

Everything seems to run fine, although it doesn't like restarting for some weird reason!?

In fact its working better than XP... But why should that surprise me?

Just basically posting here to say that the wiki compatibility list came up top trumps!
