Kinch
I'm trying to install OSx86 on a blank HD and it gets stuck on the grey Apple screen with the little spiral animation on the bottom. It literally did that for over an hour two consecutive install attemps. To get to this point, I downloaded the JaS DVD with 10.4.5 and deleted the older XP partition on my HD since I was planning on reformatting soon anyway. Any idea what the problem might be? chevy2410
I've been through this. Make sure your hd and dvdrw drive are on the primary ide chain. Make one the master and other the slave. Then when the dvd boots up hit F8 and then type -v and hit enter. If there are any problems you will be able to see what it is. If no problems it should boot into the OSX installer. It could take some time to boot to the installer so be patient. You didn't mention what hardware you are using. That might help if any further problems occur. Good Luck, Chevy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/20032-stuck-at-grey-screen/#findComment-131792 Share on other sites

Do you think that is the only way the system will run OS X or just a requirement for installation. The structure of my case does not aid in having the hd and dvd drive on the same ide chain. Colonel
sadly, OS X is very picky when it comes to hardware, so yes, you do have to have the DVD drive and hard drive on the same IDE chain. Kinch
All right what ended up happening was a SAM Multimedia: READ or WRITE failed... error. I ran a search of the boards and the thread suggested this is a media problem and to try re-burning the osx86 DVD at a lower burn speed. Only I'm on my third DVD and I've fixed the ide chain problem and I'm still getting the SAM Multimedia... Any ideas? Kinch
Hate to do this but... bump. Right now I've pretty much given up hope that this will be a long term answer for my PC but I'd really like to see if I can getting working at all given the effort I've put in thus far. chevy2410
Hey don't give up yet. I finally got OSX to run on my system. I made my dvd drive the master and HD the slave and when install was done I shutdown and then hooked HD to primary master and dvd drive secondary slave and booted up no problem. Now my dvd drive didn't seem to work when I stuck a disc in.... so I'm not really sure if that was right or if perhalps OSX just doesn't like my Liteon dvd drive. I need to test more, just need the time. Deviant0ne
Just so you know, my DVD drive and my OS X HD are not on the same IDE chain, and my install has worked on my old machine and with my new hardware. When I upgraded my hardware a couple of weeks ago, I had the same system hang problem. I resolved my issue by disabling USB keyboard and mouse support in my bios.
