Hello all

i am wondering what the Best laptop is out there that one can put OSx86 onto that would only require the most basic fixes and drivers?

i can live with the PS/2 and having to install like realteck R1000 Drivers and maybe swaping my Dell 1490 Wireless card over to the new lappy.

i am looking for a core 2 duo and 2-3 Gb of RAM.

do any of these lappys have good battery life?

i am currently running a Toshiba L305-S5865 that has only needed small fixes but its getting to be a bit short winded in terms of computing power..

is there maybe a motherboard that might fit in here that is core 2 duo and will not give me a prety much out of box compatibility?

thanks

Ryan

Hi, working for Apple allows me to see exactly what they use.

So I went out and bought me a Sony VAIO FW48E-H

Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.1Ghz

3Gb DDR2 Memory

ATI Mobility Radeon HD3400 (Not exactly what Apple use (they use Nvidia 9600m) But im sure there is a kext to fix this) w/ HDMI

320Gb SATAII HDD

DVD/RW +/-

HD Audio with HDMI

Firewire 400

Marvell youkon Ethernet Gigabit 10/100/1000

Wirless 802.11a/b/g/n

Multi Touch Trackpad when booted with apple OSX

Keyboard Very similar design to Macbook Pro

Memory Card Slots

34mm PCI Card Slot

So you can see how very similar to the Macbook pro this is. It works perfect when booted standalon with MAC OS X 10.6 but can't get it to dual boot unkless theres somone who knows how to sort this.

have you tried the Boot Camp Assistance for osx86?

i have Snow Leopard 10.6.2 & Windows XP dual booting without a problem on my Dell E1505 using Chameleon. I followed the method used for dell mini 1000, so i am pretty sure that method should work well for other models as well. (infact i followed 3 different guides, used parts of each to get mine working the way i wanted it to. gotta luv google.)

why XP.. and not Win 7 (if anybody cares to know)? well.. i have Nvidia 7300 Go on my laptop and there is no Aero support for that card on Win 7. So, sticking with the old faithful XP.

cools sounds good. what sort of battery life do you get from it?

oh and you know you could need boot camp lol that would be funny if you did, or you may needed to install windows first to. i have herd that installing OSx86 before windows is not good.

hi, How do you mean cant get it to dual boot?

As to the first poster dell inspiron is good or seen a lot of posts about using acer 6920, however it seems certain sony vaio work well

what insperon would you say is the best?

i think that depends on what you are trying to install. i installed OSx86 first, then used Boot Camp Assistant for osx86 to create a partition for Windows XP. Installed XP, then went back into OSx86 using the boot132 CD and re-installed Chameleon and fixed the booting partition. now i have Chameleon dual booting both OS without a problem :)

have you checked this?

that has a pretty good list of what version works best for Laptops, Desktops & individual Components. Its a good start.

6400 or 1525 series(even sleep works on this)

I have an older 6400 which pretty much works out of the box, using voodoohda, voodootouchpad kext's, mind i have just bought a studio 15 with a core i7 and ATI graphics so that may be problematic. one thing though which ever laptop you decide on, make sure that the OSX distro you choose is compatible, i found that iatkos and ideneb caused to many issues the easiest was IPC 10.5.6 final, although it may not be the latest and greatest it works, just used it to install on my PC, only had to install twice and add voodoohda.kext.(so far all good 2hours and counting)
