Kakewalk: Minimal effort install (EP45, EX58, P55, G41)

That is very cool that everything is working for you OOTB on the UD5... makes me wish I had picked that board over the UD3R as sound is still the issue on mine. While it's working now with the kext I found and sounds fine, the reset of the volume to almost 100% after a boot is a real pain. No sleep thus far as well. Obviously the UD3R profile/setup/DSDT in 2.2 needs a little tweaking.

 

As far as heat, I did install the NullCPU kext which dropped my temps around 8 deg C. I removed the Jmicron as I have that controller disabled.

 

I definitely need to learn how to do this compiling of DSDT's so I can use the one posted above for the UD3R and swap out the video card section. Sleep would be kind of nice to have...

 

 

Guy's I've posted my DSDT for my X58A UD3R with ALL of these fixes, nullcpu SUCKS and robs about 30% of your performance without you even knowing it...

For those not seeing the options updated after the installer runs and restarts I suggest restarting again with the -x -f flags. I tried rebooting with no flags twice and got no sound options appearing each time. It was when I restarted using the flags that the audio options became available.

No... just once. I've restarted without the flags a few times since I got it working and everything seems fine.

That is definitely strange... I installed the kext you sent the link for in /S/L/E and removed the LegacyHDA.kext, repaired perms and reboot... and no audio. 880 intel HDA does show properly in sys profiler....

 

 

 

Ok... tried dropping the larger LegacyHDA back in extras/extension... and still no audio....

Don't know if this will tell you anything or not... but replacing the AppleHDA.kext in /S/L/E with the one that was originally there and placing the larger legacyhda.kext back in place brought my audio back.

 

I noticed that the machine booted much faster without the larger legacyHDA.kext that I had found... interesting....

 

I've just installed OS X 10.6 on my computer (with Kakewalk 2.2) and everything works fine, except for the sound (there is no sound device listed at all). I guess we seem to have to same problem.

Where did you get the "original" AppleHDA.kext and legacyhda.kext?

Well, at least it's consistent.. I'm sure we'll get it working OOTB soon, mrjanek has been a great help with this!!

 

As far as the original... I was refering to the AppleHDA.kext that was in /S/L/E before I replaced it with the one that he had linked above to try. I just made a backup of that kext before replacing it and restored it (the 'original') back to /S/L/E

 

The larger LegacyHDA.kext I'm using to get my sound working is ok, but definitely has some quirks: longer boot time and the system will not remember my previous volume setting. At least we have sound with it though.

 

Out of curiosity, is anyone using an NVidia GTX 285 with a Kakewalk install? Does it work OOTB like the 4870 does?

Just posted a new update for Kakewalk 2.2. Hopefully this one solves the audio problems with X58A-UD3R, X58A-UD7 and G41M-ES2l. If it doesn't then please be patient and remember that I only have the EP45-UD3LR motherboard myself .

Mrjanek, I have a working GA-X58A-UD3R system but I had based on your kakewalk 2.0 software using the

closest match at that time which was a GA-X58A-UD7. Do you see any benefit on reinstalling the kakewalk install for my system using the correct motherboard model in the latest kakewalk 2.2 ? I assume you have an update DSDT.aml file with fixes specific to the GA-X58A-UD3R board? Thanks. Doug

Congratulations for your great work! I'm glad to have almost the same motherboard, mine is EP45T-UD3LR.

About Kakewalk 2.2, I had a problem: I have formated the flash drive as Mac OS X Externded (Jurnaled) and restored a 10.6.3 image but the drive turned to non-jurnaled after installing Kakewalk. I fixed the problem as described here http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21053?viewlocale=en_US

Everything works fine except HDMI connection. I have a Palit 8800 GT video card with two DVI connectors and I use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect a projector. When I connect the cable the image freezes and I have to power down the computer. Any suggestions about that?

Listen me mrjanek, time makes you have made a Gigabyte USB, have then them Kakewalk calls.

I have made this test, using old Gigabyte USB and installed snow the sound it does not work, but after installed the 10.6.2 the sound works… after succeeds that installing the 10.6.3 the sound does not work, but capturing the AppleHDA.kext rows from the 10.6.2 all it returns with the sound,obviously using kext utlity.

If you still have Gigabyte USB, you could resolve of sure this problem, if you have questions from makes I me, I am on hand.

This is a screen the old Gigabyte usb, i used Pacifist.

A retail DVD. You can either then burn that Retail DVD onto a USB flash drive and do the install all from that or you could create a boot CD that gets the machine booted and supplies the basic things needed but then that CD asks you to install the Retail DVD to complete the installation.

If you are going to use the cd method for install, all you need is the snowleopard dvd and the kakewalk cd you made.

New build, and thanks to all in advance, as all the reading I've done has helped in choosing this path.

 

Just so there's some reference to this madness, here's some background:

- Downgraded from an iMac 2.4 (2007) to a Mini 2.0 (Early 2009), lost a little performance but saved some cash.

- Read the forums here and elsewhere for over a week to figure out what worked best for the price and decided it was time for a leap of faith and sold the Mini to upgrade to what is in my sig and try my hand at a Hack.

 

The only two (2) things I have not acquired as yet, mostly due to wanting the most compatible solution, are the BT and Wifi options.

 

All in all the install on the build went pretty darn smooth, more so then I honestly expected. Mind you, I did run into a few problems, but will try the newest version of Kakewalk and also Paulo's DSDT once I look up how to implement it (properly).

 

Here's a few of the issues I noticed when installing via Kakewalk 2.1 (Probably due to a fault/oversight/lack of comprehension on my part):

Install: Booted via CD, install of SL went perfect (AKA No Problem!)

1st Boot: Reboot, following instructions - at least I think I am, selected the Kakewalk CD to boot into, said 'Can't find mach_kernel' so couldn't setup the EFI boot for the newly installed SL. Tried booting into the SL install and got the grey screen reboot option. Solved via booting with the USB config I made just in case. Now I can boot straight into OS X. Sadly I forgot what I did as I've already had a celebratory drink or two!

Sound: I'm not even going to mention the sound, ooops, just did, ;p. Honestly, from what I read, I expected it. Once I get everything configured, I will try out the FireWave that I still have and report on its workings or lack thereof.

Sleep: Doesn't work as yet, well it goes to sleep, but it's more like comatose. This was also expected after an initial install.

SATA: (REALLY SLOW) I did notice some severe HD slowdowns when copying between 2 SATA drives, Along the lines of going from 49-80ish MB/sec down to 1.2 Kb/sec towards the end of a 142GB copy. Not sure what this may be attributed towards, will have to look into it.

 

CPU is running at 2.8, will OC after I'm satisfied with initial results.

CPU Temp: 35c 32c 36c 31c (Ambient 21c) (Max temp reached under Cinebench was 53c)

RAM is running at 1066, will look into that later.

GPU is not showing up as supporting QE/CI tam, at least it's not listed under System Profiler.

 

The way the cores are heating, I'm wondering if I have a proper thermal layer or not.

 

Anyway, here are a few benchmarks, keep in mind, there has been NO tuning what-so-ever done, this is purely off a fresh install of 10.6, not even upgraded to 10.6.3 yet.

 

Xbench: 168.91

GeekBench: 7947

Cinebench: CPU: 4.87 OpenGL: 19.18

 

Granted, I still have to stress test the build as well.

 

I also realize I could have saved about $200 going the route of the P55 as well, but as timing would have it, and all that, the 930 was on sale at the time, and besides I wanted a better comparison to my brothers Mac Pro 8 Core.

 

I would have to say that this is a success as it stands with room for improvement. If I'm right let me know, and if I'm wrong PLEASE let me know, grin.

 

Hopefully with a little bit of luck and some guidance, I can tune this setup to give his Octo-Core a run for it's money.

 

NOTE: Just two things I thought I'd mention.

1) For whatever reason, I was unable to reply to the forum via the Windows machine as it would NOT let me type in the text box!?

2) As odd as this may seem, the system I borrowed to use whilst my Mini was gone and building this, decided to crash within hours of having the Hack built, methinks it was jealous!

I get 20X with xbench on my 3ghz e8400 & about less than half your score with GeekBench  Sounds like just a little more tweaking and your setup should truly fly. Kake is now 2.2, maybe better? Tried hand editing the DSDT and the com apple boot plist? 

 

SnowLeo doesn't show QE/CI as enabled in profiler, unlike Leo. Try a game demo like Toca mac or Flatout 2 Mac demo or something. hehe If that works, QE/CI should be enabled. 

 

Also, what do you have in your Extra/Extensions?

Ok so I'm trying an install on some new hardware. Using the Kakewalk compat list i built this system

 

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD2

Intel i7 860

8gigs corsair

1tb hdd partitioned

Nvidia GTX 260 Maxcore

 

The cd boot freezes on Mach file missing magic number

 

the usb boot freezes on Nvidia Vesa 3.0 screen.

 

Any ideas?

Still need to setup the hard link to the users on a separate partition so I can get everything up and going once more.

 

I'll also get 10.6.3 update installed as well, may haps that will make a noticeable difference.

I also had trouble with no sound when I had Legacy HDA in there. In fact, I only have fakesmc and JMicron now. 

 

I would try removing : 

 

 

IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext

JMicronATA.kext

LegacyHDA.kext

 

OSX86_Tools - fix permissions + clear extensions cache + touch extension folder + reboot

 

See if u can bring up sound device in prefs after rebooting.

Quick way to check, add something in dashboard ...if you see ripple then QE/CI works.

I used the Kakewalk CD method to install 10.6, and then downloaded and installed the combo update to 10.6.3

 

Currently sleep doesn't work right. The machine goes to low power mode, from which I cannot wake it.

 

I've tried sticking a couple different SleepEnabler kexts in the Extras/Extensions directory but none has worked... I'm not sure what I am doing wrong and could use some help!

I have been reading all of the pages on this thread and am pretty excited to try and build a Mac (from scratch on a PC).

 

I am wanting the best possible setup with the best chance of everything working, audio, internet, sleep, no overheating, etc. Here is what I am considering, please let me know if you think I will have any problems with this hardware:

Please let me know if you think the above setup will work with the Kakewalk CD install and hopefully have no issues with audio, internet, overheating, etc. I have not purchased this yet so if there is something different that I should get please also let me know.

I posted a link to a kext in a post above. Download that kext and place it in /Extra/Extensions

 

Reboot... and you should have sound. If you don't, re-run the KakeWalkBoot installer off the CD (or download it) and then place the kext in the /Extra/Extensions folder, reboot... and you should have sound.
