Kakewalk: Minimal effort install (EP45, EX58, P55, G41)

Tom, I have the same setup as you including the video card. I'm on a quest to get a solid DSDT for my X58A-UD3R system, although I have an Intel Core i7 - 930. Is the cpu type a factor when creating a DSDT?

those are the only kexts in my Extra folder

 

i believe all the settings for video card are in the pci area in dsdtse, somewhere around there

hit up dsdtse, search for gts 250, and replace all the "surrounding" code with the ones you use and you can basically use everything else

if your graphics already work then you're set

 

sorry i don't have any specifics but hopefully you have an idea what you should be deleting, just compile beforehand, if you get no errors you're good

I don't think the CPU would be a factor between the 920 and 930... they only differ by the default multiplier AFAIK.

 

I'm also wondering if the audio situation on our boards was taken care of by the DSDT as well and it work properly with the default 74k LegacyHDA.kext and not the larger one I'm using.

 

Having sleep to work properly and not need the NullCPU kext would be really nice.

Hey guys, I finally managed to solve my problem, I took out my hard disk and install the OS onto it via external HDD, and updated to 10.6.3 with sound, problem right now I'm having is, the front and back USB can detect, but doesn't appear anywhere, like when I plug in my external HDD, it doesn't appear, and my wireless is plugged in but it says nothing is detected. However, under system profiler, it detects all my USB devices, help!

Also, it says my processor is intel Xeon and 2.0GHz, what's the method to change them?

First I thank those who answered my question about FireWire a few pages ago. When I saw their answer there were already a dozen post after them so I didn't post not to mess-up the topic any more.

 

I followed advices here and choose a Gigabyte X58 UDR3 base for my config.

Could anyone point any mistake or incompatibility if there is one in this config?

I have some questions though:

- I see you're talking about overclocking. My case, PSU and ram are clearly OC-oriented (little GPU needn't all this). I was thinking of OCing the CPU to, say, 4 GHz in order to make it last longer (in performance) as I needn't such a power right now. Is this a good option? Is my config ok for that kind of OC (power, cooling...)? I would be my first overclocking...

4.2Ghz but 4.0-4.5 should get you in the same range give or take a few hundred points

 

and just delete the info for my gts 250 and replace it with what you have in your dsdt in that area and you can have all the other fixes.

Hello Everyone!

I recently bought a new system from iBUYPOWER. The configuration is similar to a lot of the ones on this thread, except for the motherboard. I chose an EVGA x58 triple SLI. Did I forever ruin the possibility of running a successful Hackintosh?

 

I also need to run Logic Studio for music production, so I really need to get this Hackintosh working ASAP.

My other specs are:

 

Intel i7 930 @ 2.8GHz

6GB DD3 RAM

Nvidia 285 GTX

64GB SSD Drive

2TB 7,2k Drive

Windows 7 is installed on the SSD, and that is particularly where I want to install OSX.

 

Using Kakewalk, I have managed to get to the bootloader, replace the Boot CD with the Snow Leopard CD, and once I press enter (to load the installer) the Apple logo shows up and immediately goes to a kernel panic. I can't really see (or even understand) what it says, but I saw something about com.boot. something something (the "You must restart you computer bla bla" dialog box covers the rest of the text).

 

Can anybody help me? Installing this Hackintosh is of primary importance to me right now. I live in NYC and need to do this for work (just couldn't afford a ridiculously expensive Mac Pro).

Tonymac has a boot cd and instructions that should work with most intel based machines.

 

Unfortunately all my experience is based on Gigabyte motherboards and the kakewalk install.

The only thing in your config that you need to strongly consider changing is that video card... the 5xxx series is not supported yet. I went with an ATI 4870 and it works out of the box with Kakewalk.

 

The X58-UD3R is a supported board now but as of now I've yet to get audio working with a clean install of Kakewalk 2.2 without adding an different kext for the HD Audio.

 

I think the 1Tb+ issue applies to Kakewalk as well. Partitioning did work fine for me on the 1tb drive.

 

Should be no problem with the 64mb cache... just a function of the drive for speed etc....

 

I would say you should have some decent success at OC'ing that rig. It's never a given but i7's do quite well with OC, just have to make sure they are cooled adequately.

I made my current SnowLeo test install, soon to be full install with the kakewalk method.  I made the Kakewalk boot CD in 10.5.8, installed Snow on my other test bed hd, installed all updates and finally installed Kake boot 2.2 to have everything working 100% ! I only have 2 kexts in my E/E now : fakesmc and JMicronATA, and I don't need the latter. dsdt setup by Kakewalk handles it all now. 

 

This is by far the fastest, easiest and smoothest install of Snow yet for me, thanks to mrjaneks great work!

BTW I've asked about it on the Chameleon thread but with the Kake boot package, I also get a visible boot file in / . Is this the way it's supposed to be now? I've tried making it invisible but I don't have the setfile command and I don't want to dl 2.3 gigs worth of developer kit just to get it ...

Well, I think no problem with this since I use my firewire card for music work and even watching dvds. Pier25 said in a previous post that he had a similar FW card working fine with EX58A UD3R.

I had one question I have seen other threads like http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=196771 there are tweaks that they say keep the heat down etc... have these types of tweaks been added to 2.2? Or are there other things you recommend doing for a setup like I have.

 

On the page I linked to he has a new DSDT for the GA-EX58-UD5/i7 930 just not sure if using that would be better the the DSDT that Kakewalk installed, or if it's the same

That is very cool that everything is working for you OOTB on the UD5... makes me wish I had picked that board over the UD3R as sound is still the issue on mine. While it's working now with the kext I found and sounds fine, the reset of the volume to almost 100% after a boot is a real pain. No sleep thus far as well. Obviously the UD3R profile/setup/DSDT in 2.2 needs a little tweaking.

 

As far as heat, I did install the NullCPU kext which dropped my temps around 8 deg C. I removed the Jmicron as I have that controller disabled.

 

I definitely need to learn how to do this compiling of DSDT's so I can use the one posted above for the UD3R and swap out the video card section. Sleep would be kind of nice to have...

So after completing my kakewalk project, I realized that I don't have the need for such a fast desktop as I found that I end up using my laptop anyway.

 

It works perfectly (sound, internet) thanks to mrjanek and GA-EX58-UD5, is incredibly fast (4.0ghz, NH-D14 cooler, 80gb SSD), is great for media (9800GT, 1.25TB HD), and is very easy to tweak and customize.

 

PM me if you are interested in buying it or learning more about the system. I am not looking to make a profit.

I'm on the X58a-UD3R, and every time I try to run the SL install disc using Kakewalk 2.2, I get to the gray apple logo screen and after about 15 seconds, it gives me the "you need to restart your computer. etc." dialog. Any suggestions? I set my bios as recommended on the Kakewalk site, but still no luck.

 

PS- I got SL installed on this system using Empire EFI and MyHack, but was never able to get working sound, so that's the main reason I'm trying this method.

 

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the update... I pulled out my kext that got audio working and put back the original... ran the new updater and after reboot have no audio... back to the No Audio Devices... etc...

Hi All,

 

I am a little unsure what next steps to take.

 

I used kakewalk, CD install, successfully to 10.6. I would like to know / confirm whether I can just use the built-in Apple software updater to update to 10.6.3.

 

Currently sleep doesn't work right. The machine goes to low power mode, from which I cannot wake it.

 

Does 10.6.3 fix this? If not, how do I know which kext I need to install?

 

Any other recommended kexts for my system?

 

Finally, what about system utilities like CPU temperature monitors, fan speed monitors, and even video card overclocking software (I know, sort of off topic at this point).

That is definitely strange... I installed the kext you sent the link for in /S/L/E and removed the LegacyHDA.kext, repaired perms and reboot... and no audio. 880 intel HDA does show properly in sys profiler....

 

 

 

Ok... tried dropping the larger LegacyHDA back in extras/extension... and still no audio....

Don't know if this will tell you anything or not... but replacing the AppleHDA.kext in /S/L/E with the one that was originally there and placing the larger legacyhda.kext back in place brought my audio back.

 

I noticed that the machine booted much faster without the larger legacyHDA.kext that I had found... interesting....

Its ok, I got my sound and USB to work with dual boot 10.6.3 and windows 7 working fine, only thing I don't understand is why I can't see my Windows 7 partition on my Mac or Mac partition on my Windows 7, doesn't matter since I will have another hard disk to act as storage between the 2 OSes, thanks a lot for your hard work Mr Janek!

Already reported this on your blog, but for the folks here it looks like good news on the G41M-ES2L. After a little trial and error with Kakewalk boot 2.2 I have all sound options available again. Happy to say that both front headphone and rear audio all seem to be available in preferences and working fine now. System Profiler shows Built In Audio as:

For those not seeing the options updated after the installer runs and restarts I suggest restarting again with the -x -f flags. I tried rebooting with no flags twice and got no sound options appearing each time. It was when I restarted using the flags that the audio options became available.
